Pipboys! Who should have them?

Post » Sun Aug 16, 2009 5:55 am

Ok, so i wanted to make this a poll, but i can't figure out how :-/.

Simply put, the Pipboy is one of the trademarks and main things of what makes a FO game, a Fo game. It's in every one, and is often only found on the player character (with a few exceptions).

This presents a problem though. How 'fallouty' will a game be if almost everyone you encounter has a pipboy? And if that breaks the 'fallouty' feel, then who should get a pipboy and why? So, here are the poll options that i can think of (feel free to suggest more).

1. Everyone gets a pipboy and they're all the same.

2. The pipboy is a (relatively) easy to acquire item which players can choose whether or not they want to use with little to no effect on thier effectiveness (in other words, it doesn't give any bonuses).

3. The pipboy is an extremely hard to acquire end game item, or more of a status symbol that says 'i made it to the end game, and kicked butt'.

4. The pipboy is a purely asthetic choice between several different versions (they don't actually do anything other then look pretty).

5. The pipboy is an item that everyone has but is also an important aspect of character customization and development (for example, it could provide apps which would make certain actions easier, a targeted shot app for a sniper as opposed to a medical diagnostic app for someone with a high first aid/doctor).

If you want to vote for a choice, just type the number in a response in this thread or send me a PM with the appropriate number. I'll try to tally them up daily or bi-daily, but RL will probably get in the way at some point. Of course, i could just get 3 or 4 responses, so it might not be that hard :-P.

Also, i tried to make each question as neutral as possible while still explaining the general idea. If you feel they aren't neutral enough and could use a better explanation, any suggestions along those lines would be appreciated.

I think that this has been kind of talked about before on some other threads ;)

But on your topic,
PIP Boys could be like an Ipad of today (or similar to a Blackberry)
There could be military ones, civilian ones and Vault ones.

some could be in MIB working order (Mint in Box)
some could be WWU order (Working, Well Used)
some could be NW order (Needs Work)
and some could be, JUNK (JUNK  )

So... is that a vote for choice 5...? lol

I think you misunderstand (i'm gona proof it to see if i can make it more comprehendable). It's not a question so much of how pipboys exsist in the game, but more about who should have access to pipboys along with the how and why (where applicable).

There could be military ones, civilian ones and Vault ones. There should be some variations to them, though i′m not sure about civilian ones and Vault ones. If the lore says Pip-boys came from Vaults then those two should be the same only one is more reliable then the other. The military ones (Enclave, BoS etc) could have faction specific modifications to enhance combat efficiancy for their patrolling squads.

2. The pipboy is a (relatively) easy to acquire item which players can choose whether or not they want to use with little to no effect on thier effectiveness (in other words, it doesn't give any bonuses).

i had to pick one. :)

The pip boys are vault tec, but didnt come directly from the vault (they did distribute them to vault dweller once the war began), IIRC you could buy them before the war. Image

Hmmm.... you would have to acquire it. Probably by raiding a vault.

If everyone gets them... a warehouse full of PiPBoys was found. Several hundred thousand, mint-in-box.

Also depends on if the devs start you out as Vault Dwellers, the lot of you. If you can play specific factions, each faction receives a faction item. Up to the Devs.

Personally, they should be just for show. Like in the game. They provide a map, notes, etc... nothing special. You should be able to get them... but it should be moderately difficult, if not down right impossible.

I believe that pipboys should only be for specific people or after a specific time as they seem to be confined to Vaults. They really were a rarity. Like how the brotherhood outcasts needed one in FO3 and the Boomers havingone in New Vegas. If everyone has one then that exclusivity is lost. Desmond Lockheart. Proof that good conversation isn't dead.

The best way to avoid a Deathclaw is not to be there in the first place.

I think all players should start with a make-shift pip boy (it would be oversized and rusty), and they could get better ones by raiding vaults or bases.

I think that everywone could get a fallout 3 or new vegas normal pip-boy but they could like customize them and add apps that should help them in gameplay

i think only vault dwellers should get the pipboy. all it does is give you access to a map and notes really. how hard would it be for people to just have a map and a journal of sorts for notes? o ya,i forgot the light. people could carry flashlights too. Image

I like the idea of several different pipboys. The one you start with might only have a basic map and quest-log, while the high end models have a detailed map, shows human players (since their pip is trackable ) etc.

Actually Pip-boys are RobCo.

Anyway, heres an article from the Vault about Pip-Boys, go down until you find Pip-Pads, which were found in a warehouse, possibly why everybody has one?

3. The pipboy is an extremely hard to acquire item for non-vault dwellers
What I would like

4. The pipboy is a purely asthetic choice between several different versions (they don't actually do anything other then look pretty)
The likely result

I'm guessing they'll implement the pipboy as one skin of the (same) major interface, maybe alongside hallucinations of Grampy Bone and Co. and their advice. :P Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (

Hahaha, good ole Grampy Bone! I completely forgot about that in FO2. Might be time for me to do another play through.

Although, to be honest I can't really think of anything that could replace the pipboy as an excuse for an interface. A paper theme just doesn't cut it in the setting. And jokes aside, spirits telling even tribals were to go suits Prey, not Fallout. Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (

I think every should get Pip-Pads instead of Pip-Boys and they should all be the same. Just used for an interface to bring up notes, maps, and options.

'Tis hidden away in the Vault Dweller's Survival Guide (Fallout 1 Manual). If you have it in PDF like me it'll be pretty easy to find. Ultimately that is the source The Vault cites. Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (
