Piracy

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:02 pm

Piracy is mentioned quite a bit in Oblivion, from Dark Brotherhood missions to official released mods from Bethesda, but what's the real scoop on piracy? Are their any large organizations, or just freelance criminals? Do they attack cities, or blockade them, or just attack ships going about the continent? Is there much inter-continental trade as far as ships go? What about the Imperial navy, i saw a book of them and wondered where they were, and why the empire needs a navy if cyrodiil only has two small sections of coast? Does the Empire, as in Imperial sections, extend into places like morrowind, as the game implies? Thank you all, just wondering about some facts on piracy for a mod i'm working on^^.

Disaster at ionith, sounds right, thanks. any more info, anyone? my quest involves Elsweyr sending privateers invading topal bay, and you must stop them.

well they don't seem to be as organized as the pirate group from the dlc, just seem like small time smugglers and raiders and I don't think there's intercontinental trade, there is though when the empire began to invade akivir but if I remember correctly, not sure about this wholey, they got cut off when a freak storm destroyed their ships. It was in one of the ingame books.

Piracy isn't often organised in Tamriel. It does exist, and in fact there seems to be a lot of it, especially around Argonia. But a province sending privateers may need a lot of explanation, unless of course it was the Renrijra Krin that did it, who are Khajiit rebels who fight for the reclamation of the Trans-Niben.

Did a search on TIL. http://search.freefind.com/find.html?id=72791987&pageid=r&mode=ALL&n=0&query=piracy. Enjoy! :)

(A bit late at night where I am, otherwise I'd post excerpts and be all loreish or something).

Apparently, piracy is also extremely common in the Illiac bay, partially due to the deep hatred between the provinces and the overall affluence of the area. This, of course, according to what I've drawn from Daggerfall. Apparently it also exists in both organized and unorganized form along the Gold Coast with Summerset Isle.

The empire covers the entire continent, its reasonable to assume the navy exists in other provinces in the same way the legions do.

They are no members of the common throng; they are all noblemen who have gone wrong.

Let's not forget Captain Dugal, he was pretty successful up until that huge battle in Anvil bay. Even though that was quite a while ago.

Isn't Ben Nevis a mountain in Britain, the tallest? I don't understand, sorry.

Edit: Kind of an interesting history to the mountain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Nevis

I'm assuming it some how slows down the connection. I'm no expert on how the internet works, but I would imagine a mountain doesn't help.

I would guess the Imperials don't care that much about their navy and mostly base themselves on fighting on land just like the Ancient Romans.

Source: Wikipedia article on the Roman Navy.

The Roman Navy (Latin: Classis, lit. "fleet") comprised the naval forces of the Roman state. Although the navy was instrumental in the Roman conquest of the Mediterranean Sea basin, it never enjoyed the prestige of the Roman legions. Throughout their history, the Romans remained a primarily land-based people, and relied on their more nautically inclined subjects, such as the Greeks and the Egyptians, to build and man their ships. Unlike modern naval forces, the Roman navy even at its height never existed as an autonomous service, but operated as an adjunct to the Roman army.

Who'd want to rob military convoys anyway? :P

The Empires trade is done through the Niben. It's allot harder to bring goods through the jungle. The first PGE has some more on that.

thank you all. It seems to me that it exists more like real piracy did in a similar time here on earth, as opposed to fairy tale pirates or pirates of the carribean. So could i base facts on things that really exist, but not mentioned ingame? thanks again^^

Yes! In fact, you should take inspiration from the real world. Just don't copy it. :D

Somalia <-> Elsewyre? They're both covering a narrow entrance on a busy lane. The river and it's outliers are also quite suited for smaller skifs. I think Khajiit would look good in the Everglades. .

I guess that makes sense. I also get the image of Dunmer pirates saying "Arrr" a lot. :) The gravel voices of "Morrowind", that is. Maybe that's why Jiub was being repatriated to Vvardenfell; he might have done time for piracy/banditry.

Piracy -- How does it exist in Tamriel?

DRM.

Oh, wait, wrong thread.

______________________________

On the subject of the Imperial Navy -- it was certainly powerful enough to launch a massive invasion of another continent, and even if it failed, it wasn't for lack of ships or seapower. While I'm willing to believe the Empire's Navy is inferior to, say, that of Summerset, I'd say that it's silly to say that there's not that much sea presence just because aspects of Imperial culture are based on Roman stuff.

I mean, really -- they have galleys.

Hey, since we're on the topic of piracy, I don't suppose Imperial galleons or any ships are armed with cannons are they?

I'm assuming that gunpowder hasn't been invented in the Elder Scrolls universe.

The Redguards used cannons, I believe, on their ships. It is also a joke in Daggerfall.
