Pirate games

Post » Fri Jul 09, 2010 11:25 pm

So, my girlfriend made me watch Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (which is actually pretty good, IMHO.) with her the other day, and now for some reason, I really want a good pirate game. I don't know of any, because up until right now, they never interested me at all. So I was hoping you guys could point me towards a few?

Doesn't the PotC franchise have a couple games based on the movies?

Sid Meier's Pirates! and Monkey Island. Both are brilliant games/series.

Beth did one too, but I can't comment to how good it was.

Yar!

I liked "Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat" though it has its issues (mainly, enemies respawn whenever you leave a cell, and there is not point to killing enemies since there's no level-up Xp based system). That aside, the story was pretty good, the naval combat was awesome (if unrealistic), and the puzzles not too annoying. It isn't the best game in the world, but it was entertaining, if at times a tad on the frustrating side.

Bethesda's pirate game was "Sea Dogs" and I hear it is very buggy (no surprise there...).

I've heard good things about Sid Meier's Pirates! but I have not played it personally.

If I said that, the mods might misunderstand me, and then I'd be in a lot of trouble. :P

meh... I wish someone would come out with a GOOD open world pirate game. The only one I have enjoyed was Pirates online, and the only reason I liked it was because of battling at sea. that was freaking cool! If Bethesda came out with an open world pirate game, I would [censored] my pants and make a (another) shrine to todd.

Alrighty, Sid Meier's Pirates! it is. It looks like it'll be a blast, and the good reviews from you guys / companies didn't hurt either. :P

Thanks everyone!

Heh, funny you should mention that, I'm downloading it as I type this. I love MMO's, so mixing that with my new-found love for pirate games, can only lead to good things.

Also, I know how you feel Septim. It's a shame we don't see those, but given how up until last night I wouldn't have cared if they made one, I can see why they wouldn't. I don't know how popular that would be.

I suggest http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_%28video_game%29 or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Pirates_2:_City_of_Abandoned_Ships. I prefer AoP2 personally, but there's still a lot of people who like PotC with the Build mod better
You could also try the original Sea Dogs, though I recommend you stay far away from Age of Pirates (1) :P

Do expect a bit of a learning curve, some dodgy translation/cheesy voice acting and rather outdated graphics if you try any of this series, though.

Eh I agree. but still! I'm also hoping rockstar will make one since they did such a good job on GTA and RDR

The free to play MMO http://www.puzzlepirates.com/ is the best.

Every single crewman on most ships are players (often around 40 or more for many ships), and everyone during a battle is working, while the captain or highest officer is driving the ship and planning when to fire or board, in a station during battles:

-Loading guns
-Draining water out of the ship
-Taking care of the sails
-Plugging the holes made by the enemy cannons

And each one of those post is a kind of puzzle, and when your ship board the enemy's, it's time to fight in a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVKbhgQA3OY&feature=related style fight.

I played a disney game made by Akella studios called Pirates of the Caribbean - and yes, it was based on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, even the black pearl is in. But otherwise no recognisable characters. It's not really great, but I think it has charm. You can play as a trader, selling stuff from one nation to another, buy a bigger ship and stuff. Or you can go pirate, destroy ships or board them and make your officers captain of the other ship, then build a small fleet and sack a fort.

I enjoyed it a lot. I even found a mod that replaced almost all of the music with music from the movies - big improvement!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_%28video_game%29#POTC_Build_Modification (also known as Sea Dogs 2 in some circles) combined with the latest stable version of the http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php/topic/15382-build-14-beta-1/ is a fantastic open world pirate game. I wouldn't play it without the Build mod. Even though Bethesda only published it and didn't have anything to do with the development, the original game still holds high the age old Bethesda tradition of being riddled with bugs. Also, the Build mod includes tons of great new content.
