Pistol vs. Revolver

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 8:55 pm

Dear friends,

Well... does anyone is very troubled with the fact that the revolver-base-weapon in the game is called .44 Pistol? I mean... it is a revolver. Not a pistol. They clearly are different weapons...

I found this a little bit weird for a game that has the most attention to weapons.

In a country where one of our illustrious Congressmen referred to a civilian version of an assault rifle as a "Ghost Rifle", I do not really find it all that surprising that some people would not be able to tell the difference between a pistol and a revolver.

Keep in mind this is coming from the same developer who designed the combat shotgun of Fallout 3 and left handed bolt-action weaponry.

I don't think firearms were ever their strong suit.

There's also a Pipe Revolver, which is a revolver.

The convention of applying the term "Pistol" to semi-auto's only is very recent and many, many gun folks don't follow it. While it cannot be denied that the terminology is moving in the semi=pistol and cylinder=revolver direction - just based on common usage. I am of the opinion that all handguns can rightfully be called "pistols" with semi-auto and revolver being subsets of either/both. All of Colt's revolvers were advertized as "Pistols" 20-40 years before the first semi-auto even existed, and single-shot flintlocks were called "pistols" for a hundred years before that. Shakespeare even had a character named "Pistol" in the 1500's. (Can you tell I've had this argument before? ;))

They are all handguns to me, they can be clip fed for larger ammunition between reloads or revolver for more power, they are all handguns.

Pistol designates a weapon that can be fired with one hand. The action is an entirely separate issue.

Rifles/Pistols are Magazine fed, clips are used to load magazines..... Given that even the arms dealer in Diamond city can't get that right, I have no assumption that ANY of the terminology used in the game is accurate.....

Heck, every weapon can be fired with one hand - at least once. :talk:

um they are secondary weapons so you would bring one in case you run out of ammunition for your primary weapon.

But a revolver is a weapon that has a revolving chamber. The're not limited to one-hand... like this one

A pistol may be semi-auto or full-auto, a revolver can be single-action or double-action. Their firing system is completely different:

The biggest Gun Sin in this game is the character continuously slamming the cylinder home with momentum ( a HUGE NO-NO that WILL destroy a revolvers timing eventually) & the constant cocking of a double-action revolver. The only reason to [censored] a DA revolver would be for long range precision shots....and even then many DA experts in real life can do about as well using Double Action. For speed cocking each shot is STUPID.

C-O-C-K is a "bad-word" ???

WTF?

I play all kinds of video games. A lot of em' have some serious pistols, but I never use em'. Seems dumb really and with a host of opponents with scoped weapons they are redundant. To answer your point. I'll leave the pistol at home and bring another couple of mags.

My current character is handguns only. (level 45) I just prefer handguns....in real life and in game.

ya but in alot of those games you get effectively unlimited ammunition, which is why you do not use your secondary, in real life you can only carry so much with you so you want a back up weapon with light weight rounds like a pistol.

I don't play those games. Ammo, or rather the lack of it defines my fighting quite often.

I watched some kind of a shooting contest show once, where the contestants came up with challenges that they and the others would then have to try.

Contestant: "AK-47, that bottle over there, with my dominant hand."

Host: "Your... dominant hand? You want to try it with one hand?"

Contestants: "Yes."

Other contestants:

Surprisingly, 2 out of the 3 made the shot.

it also might be more effective to use a secondary than your primary, for instance if you use a close range weapon as your primary, you can use your pistol to take out far away enimies and vice versa

I've always been under the impression that a revolver is a type of pistol? You know, a handgun. I guess the whole classification of pistols is fuzzy-- some people see pistols as a unique subset of handguns, some see it as a catch all that includes them all.

From what I can tell, pistols have long been used to refer to revolvers, so even if the definition is changing to refer to only autos and semi-autos, I don't think Bethesda should be criticized on this until and unless the change in definition has been adopted by most. There's enough to criticize them on regarding gun design anyway (like the bolt-actions).

Not in the games I play. LOL. An expert Duty Stalker Sniper NPC, yup they have ranks, has a 50% chance for a headshot on the first shot and 100% on the second. Pistols ... no.

Back in the days of black powder, both muzzle loaders and revolvers were referred to as pistols.
