Pistol usage

Being used to TF2, I'd say a pistol is good enough. It may not save me when outnumbered (nor will an additional primary), but it will definitely help finishing off dying opponents.

I would use a Pistol, but as an engineer I plan to play defensively. I want a Shotgun for the close-ranged encounters and I want a Light Rifle to support my team on the front, and blast people who try to go for objectives that I can keep an eye on. If this doesn't work as well as I hope upon playing the game. I'll most certainly be using a Pistol with my Shotty ^_^

Actually Pistols will probably be more useful on a heavy because of the knife in offhand.
I cannot remember if it was an official source but it seems that Heavies do more Knife damage.

A Heavy also has no problem aiming as well as other body types and usually already has weapons for mid to long range, which makes me ponder if he might not be a good choice as well.

On a medium char i might prefer the SMG.

I like pistols for their semiautomatic fire; accuracy is key for me. I'm not sure whether I'm going to prefer the knife over knockdowns; time will tell.

I do use pistols half the time. In games like Uncharted 2, COD, and BF:BC 2, i would always use pistols instead of reloading, and never did it fail me. Also just joined the community, so hi everyone :D

The M9 in U2 was amazing, so much better than the AK. Pistols in U2 were actually really deadly, same as with BF:BC 2 and CoD 4 (following CoDs were kinda of lacking in the pistol department).

There's an issue with your plan. Heavys are slow. That means, once you knife a person or two, people will just back away when you charge at them with your pistol out.

Exactly, a heavy relies on pure stopping power. Which pistols are not generally good at.

The heavy primaries make me think that something like an assault rifle or SMG will be necessary, as they have little to no versatility.

i.e. Minigun spraying at close range, or a heavy grenade launcher.

Unless you take into account that as a heavy I may well be using an AR as my primary. The heavy has other benefits besides outright firepower and I plan to test the waters with it.

Aside from health? I'm not aware of any, but I would be grateful for enlightenment.

Poll needs a wait and see option. I'm going to have to see if they actually can kill people and if their equip speed is notably faster than ARs or SMGs.

Well lets just assume they are in a niche role.

I.E. Bad Company 2 or Modern Warfare 2.

If I put a wait and see option in the poll, everyone, including me would most likely pick it.

Well health would be the major physical benefit, but there's a possible psychological edge to the heavy that I want to check out. In an RPG when you see a critter that is substantially larger than you often your first instinct is to take cover and not engage, on the flipside you may feel you have the advantage because they're slow and have slow attacks, I'm going to see if I can take advantage of these behaviors by being a heavy that isn't packing a heavy gun.

it would really depend on pure situation, if the light or medium knows a quick flanking route then that will be their first instinct. If you've got them stuck in a place where flanking isn't an option they will most likely just high-tail away from you. I doubt that anyone's reaction will be to simply cower in fear. While an assault rifle and a shotgun would be a worthy loadout, you might as well use a light machine gun and beef your ammo capacity.

I said yes, but then again I feel it all depends on the role I would take.

If its my soldier or Engi, I'll go with the pistol. Where as if I'm mostly playing medic, or operative, I feel the shotty would be more useful as I'm more than likely closer to the action, and someone is probably in my face for some buckshot.

It does depend on the role. The poll was to see if you would do it at all. In competitive play

If I play as a Medium I wont walk around with a pistol, no - I will walk around with a SMG, more damage, more bullets, more firepower, to me this is an obvious choice, but if I now happen to play as a Light, then of course I will

Well it really isn't a choice as a light.
And that's your choice and I respect it.

Yeah.. I know, not a choice - but a must :P

Thank you, Drifter - I guess? :P

Everyone got the rights to their own choices and opinions, should not be tacked down upon unless well.. Someone comes up with the idea to extermine a group of people - again :l

Yup you can carry two secondaries instead of a primary and secondary.

Wait, is there an alternative to the pistol as a secondary weapon? I think that should've been in the OP.
