Place specific Songs/Compositions

Oh, and battle music shouldn't warn me about enemies like it does in unmodded Oblivion.

True, that's what I dislike most about how bethesda handles the music in their games.

Morrowind had two groups music was separated into and those would be in battle and not in battle groups. It did not differentiate between towns, wilderness, or dungeons. Oblivion divided its soundtrack into dungeon, town, explore, and battle. Arena and Daggerfall divided their sountracks into groups based on the weather, time of day, being inside an inn, being inside a dungeon, or exploring. Arena also had being inside a store as one. There have not been any specific themes for specific occasions except for Oblivion's main theme playing in during the fight between Mehrunes Dagon and Akatosh in the Temple of the One. I think it would be cool to have more thought into which situation calls for which theme, but if I like a piece of music, I'm not sure that I want it to play in only one situation through the entire game.

I like it, and I could imagine the overworld music intertwining with a town's theme the closer and closer you get. What I mean is separate versions of overworld music that get tinges of a near town's music theme in nearby areas.

I won't be disappointed if it's like Oblivion though.

Only interesting to me if done in conjunction with another idea: Bards and Minstrels wandering the land. City A would have its own music, heard in the tavern and "local" because it was composed by the local bard. The ruler of each area would have their own musicians playing while they held court, with music composed for them by their minstrels. And so on and so on.

Different musical themes for different towns doesn't seem very TES to me for some reason. It'd feel kind of artificial. You know, like the game knows you're in that cell, so it plays a certain theme, and that would kind of isolate parts from each other, but TES is just one big world.

I agree with this statement.

I'm more interested in seeing music handled better in general. I'd like to see specific music for various kinds of weather, regions, time of day. I want that moody music for overcast days, or that quiet ambient music for nights, music that suits snowfall, and other pieces that reflect rainfall. Morning music, sunny afternoon music, quiet moody for your house, or ship, or even your room in an inn.

Yes, that's so true. I wish Skyrim will have more of them than Oblivion but I doubt it as Jeremy Soule will deliver the music again.
Jeremy Soule does a good job, but his music isn't as unique as in other classic games.
In Supreme Commander 1 and 2 the ~18 tracks didn't differ much. There is always something that makes each song sound like another.
Some basic theme he uses to give each game a unique touch, but it lacks variation and most important, feelings that fit the current situation or the mood the player should be in.

Ahh...the Super Nintendo...Zelda 3, Secret of Mana...such a cheap soundchip, such cheap soundquality but sooo good music you'll never forget and when listening again,
you'll feel like you are playing it again. That's what I'm missing in nowadays tripple A game productions. I can't remember any music from a good game I played in the past few years.

I totally agree. To be honest I would be happy even if they just decided to add special themes for the really important moments like boss battles or the end of the game. Yeah haha, some of those chip tunes are my favorite. Super nostalgia trip right there. It's interesting that it doesn't really matter how low quality the song is - Chiptunes are just basic melodies created with very limited notes. But it's freaking awesome because of it's simplicity.

I'd like to try and contact Jeremy Soule and ask him - but I haven't been able to find his twitter or anything. This is up there on my wish-list.

PS: how do I quote more than one person on this forum?
