The "true" Ald-ruhn would have real walls. The Ald'ruhn in a game is just a miniature of the "real" thing.

Although I agree with you, is it not the game that makes the game? Not the stories or lore?
It's kinda like saying that you here New York City is huge, but when you go there, it's tiny. (Just an example, I'm not saying that NYC is tiny)

MK said some stuff on it back a long time ago, but if you want in-game information, I believe that the proprietor of the Imperial Bridge Inn mentions it, usually when talking to the Imperial Guard.

First, A giant gate to a hellfire world of demons opens up and starts spewing forth the worst creatures imaginable, all hell-bent on destruction of Ald'Ruhn.
Then, A giant crawling bug thing tank leaves the gate too, with even more beasts.
Finally, as if that wasn't enough, the marketplace rises up on a set of legs and starts kicking the daedra's asses.

Wouldn't this be a wacky day for a tourist visting the city?

And yeah, it was this whole thing by MK as a Christmas or New Year's special -- Ald-Ruhn was destroyed in the Daedric assault, despite heavy resistance by both local residents and, more notably, the GIANT [censored] EMPEROR CRAB ALD-SKAR! Becase, apparently, all the other buildings in Ald-Ruhn are modeled after the shell of the long-dead Emperor Crab at its center.
