Placing Items in Your House

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 10:21 pm

Houses come with a plethora of things already on the counters and shelves which is all fine and dandy but I enjoy decorating my house with things I’ve found in my adventures. Like a basket full of jewels and a table covered in scrolls and daggers. But I’ve found out the hard way that placing things is a difficult task, most of the time you can spend an hour setting your house up. You’ll leave and do some quests or whatever, come back and everything will either be on the floor or just gone. Now my question is, has anyone figured out a way to safely place things on tables? Or is it just too bugged right now to even try?

I saw a post a while back stating that removing ALL original item's then placing your own stop's the 'item explosion' personally i have not tried this myself so cannot say for sure.

Could try making a new save to test this, ill do it myself later if i go back on Skyrim (have not played in a week) remove all original items in Whiterun then place a few (rather than full out decorating to save a TON of time :P) a couple of fast travels or a quick misc quest then check the house.

I ended leaving my house pretty much alone. I did put apples in a bowl which half ended on the floor. Some have stayed in the bowl so I am hopeful. I placed a basket on a crate that fell on the floor the first time I re-entered my house. But I put it back and so far it has stayed in place. Iv'e also had issues with a book shelf not "opening" after putting books on it, thus, losing the books. Iv'e kept decorating to a minimum because of the issues Iv'e read about on the forums.

I think Bethesda must have been aware of this since the decorations they let you buy are pretty much limited to chests, dressers, and things that let you store things but not have them out on display.

I hate that the physics engine takes over whenever my character enters her place and all the objects that are out where she can see them starting throwing their little electronic elbows around and pushing each other and everything around. I remember the same thing happening in Bethesda's Fallouts, too, and watching a crate full of milk bottles vibrate like crazy.

It really takes away from collecting souvenirs. I want to be able to put stuff on shelves, not have them come with bowls and crap that means nothing to my character!

I spent all afternoon and most of the evening yesterday making my first dedicated attempt at decorating my home in Solitude and found it even worst then Oblivion. The first problem I ran into was placing potions on a shelf in the master bedroom only to have them get thrown off every time I reloaded my game. Then no matter where I placed a dragon claw it too world only get thrown when I reloaded the game but eventually after I knocked it around for I bit I finally stayed where I placed it. The worst part of the whole thing was when I found out that no matter where I placed any kind of helmet and some potions be it a shelf or table by itself or with a group when I reloaded the game I would find it thrown on the floor. I tried the clearing off a table and placing things and some objects in the game seem to just want to be on the floor.

I had no problems placing the Centurion Dynamo Core, books, skooma, grand soul gem, black soul gem, weapons if they're spaced away from other objects, and a troll skull with a petty soul gem in the mouth (though getting its mouth open was the real pain). I also managed to shove two staffs in a basket with no issues yet. The whole thing has just turned me off decorating my home in Skyrim and I hope that Bethasda can fix some of this issues in future patches.

I use this method to decorate all the time/
drop everything you want to use to decorate
leave the house,
re-enter the house
decorate :celebration:

if you drop the items then decorate without leaving the house first when you come back later they will be on the floor.

That is how I do it as well. But it does not work on all items I am afraid. The bust of the grayfox can be stationary for a whole weeks and suddenly fall over one day when I enter my house for some reason. Also some items cannot be moved around after using that method, I dropped some dwemer plates, forks, knives and cups but they were stuck to ground only option was to pick them up into my inventory. Even after several tries they remian stuck to the ground...

that doesnt explain how all the food, plates, tankards, and cheese wedges picked themselves up off the floor and placed themselves nicely back on the dining table, after you beat lydia in that drunken rage and made a little mess when jumping up on the table in raging fits of bald blind fury induced beating of a housecarl. I suppose she decided to clean up the mess that "SHE MADE".

The weapon and sheild displays and armor displays work. Everything else is a gamble.
