Plane shot down by missle in Ukraine.

Post » Fri Jul 18, 2014 8:21 pm

Don't have any details, watching CNN right now. Came here thought it would be mentioned so I can read what happened.

From what I take, a missile shot a plane down, 200+ dead. (all of them, can't remember how many on board) and nobody knows who shot the plane down. This doesn't look good.

Details can easily be found through any news website on the internet. For examplehttp://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-28339843. The downed plane was Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, with all 298 people on board killed.

Its almost certainly been confirmed that the plane was shot down by the Pro-Russian rebels operating in Eastern Ukraine, who have also recently shot down a Ukrainian fighter jet and a cargo plane. The Ukrainian Security services have released a conversation between two pro-Russian rebels and two Russian military intelligence officers where the rebels confirm that they shot down the plane. The Ukrainian government and numerous other sources have claimed that the pro-Russian rebels themselves do not possess the capability to shoot down military jets and civilian passenger aircraft, claiming that this is further confirmation that Russia is providing modern military equipment and weaponry to the rebels.

The Australian Parliament actually had statements this morning from both the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader who actually agreed and worked together (anyone familiar with Australian politics at the moment realises how remarkable that is alone) in condemning those who shot it down. The opposition leader actually called Russia out on their involvement and actually referred to the 27 Australians killed on board as having been 'murdered', not killed, but murdered. Strong stuff.

I concur. I'm having a very hard time containing myself and my unpopular opinions in the matter

Bad stuff. I've been following the news most of the day on and off. Its almost certainly pro-Russian forces in Eastern Ukraine who mistook the airliner for a Ukrainian military cargo plane. Apparently a rebel leader posted on twitter not long after contact was lost with the plane bragging about downing another Ukrainian plane, and then promptly deleted it. I highly doubt they meant to shot down a civilian liner, its almost certainly accidental.

There were Dutch, Australian, Malaysian, UK, German, Canadian, Belgian, and Phillipine citizens on that plane. And there's still 47 or so passangers who's nationalities haven't been released yet. I know speculation is that 23 Americans may have also been on board.

This has the makings for a terrible international incident.

The rebels claimed a little while back that they'd captured a BUK missile system, which is capable of shooting down planes at the altitude that MH17 was at (just over 30,000 ft); they deleted the social media posts making these claims a few hours after MH17 was shot down. There was also an An-26 (Ukrainian military cargo plane) shot down three days ago while at just over 20,000 ft (generally outside the range of most of the MANPADs the rebels have been using), although it's not yet clear if this was done by the rebels or Russian forces (although there seems to be fewer and fewer distinctions between the two these days).

In the messages picked up by the Ukrainian security, they say is there sign of the weapon, this was as one of the rebels was discussing the incident with a Russian officer, the rebel goes on to say that he saw the tail on the ground with the airline marking and that there were bodies still in the seats, they seemed more concerned that plane had landed on their houses. Non confirmed reports are that the rebels had retrieved the black box and handed it over to Russian authorities.

Two of the people on the plane came from my hometown.

Of all the airlines in the world to be shot down, what are the chances of it being Malaysian Airlines...

The amount conflict happening in the world right now is crazy.

If it's pro Russian rebels, Putin has hell to pay.
