Plausibility of BRINK as a competitive gaming title.

Post » Tue Nov 09, 2010 11:20 am

Hello!

I'm representing a handful of competitive gamers who are interested in whether BRINK could potentially take off as a tournament game. For anyone who knows anything about competitive games we currently consist of players who have competed or are currently competing for organisations such as Team-Coolermaster, Infused.Tt eSports and The Last Resort. Collectively we have competed at the top of the European Team Fortress 2/Counter-Strike: Source/Call of Duty 4/Quake III scenes and won thousands of pounds in prize money.

We have recently become very interested in BRINK as it seems to combine a variety of aspects that we all enjoy. However we have seen a number of multi-player titles fail miserably on a competitive level for a variety of reasons.

Admittedly we have not read all or watched all the developer interviews so something may have been covered already but we would like to ask the following questions to help us gauge the probability of a competitive community being established.
We would be delighted if anyone could help us but obviously a Dev response would be fantastic :)

* Will the game have a demo feature for us to review games we have previously played? (This is important because it allows cheat accusations to be reviewed in games where no admin is present, it also allows people to submit plays to be edited for frag movies which is a fairly key aspect of competitive games) If so what features will it offer? smoothing, free look, chase came etc.

*Will the game be easily customizable in order to achieve a high stable frame rate? (This is important because it helps even the playing field and remove any advantage a player with a good PC might have over a player with a bad PC)

*Will it be easy to customize game types/restrict certain weapons etc? (It is important to remove/minimize random aspects of the game or weapons not in the interest of competitive play)

*Will there be a map editor or mod engine available? (These help enlarge the competitive map pool and tweak existing maps for comp play whilst the ability to mod the game means the community can add essential comp features you have left out.

*Will you be sponsoring/supporting online/offline tournaments to kick start the scene, like the majority of competitive developers/publishers?

Thank you very much!

Very likely. A website has been created for the sole purpose of displaying and commenting competitive games of Brink, in fact.

First off, you are not going to get any sort of reply from devs here. Head over to http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/ instead.

And for your questions.. we know next to nothing about the PC version at all.. sadly.
We've asked for demo recording, mod tools etc but never really gotten any answer on it. Server/client cfg, not much known there either.
Don't even know if there is going to be a spectator mode.

BrinkVault will be hosting tournaments and a league will come out as soon as we see this game can take competitive gaming properly.

I dare say that with what I've seen so far, this could easily be the best competitive team-based FPS on consoles, hands down. I don't know much about the PC version, though...

I agree. I have full confidence in this game, and it's very hard for me to trust developers, but Bethesda has got this in the bag. It is a very competitive, and team based game, and if the whole team doesn't try their best, it will be a hard game to win. Everyone has their own role, and objectives to fulfill, which is why this game relies on teamwork, and will be a great competitive title!

Bethesda is only PUBLISHING the game, thank the good ol' dev team at Splash Damage for the sheer amount of win that is Brink ;-)

To answer this, I'm a long time competitive PC gamer. A lot of people from my generation are sick and tired of all the FPSs we've been playing over the years.
Developers haven't been listening to their buyers, and still sell. Well trust me when I say this...

If another Call of Duty comes out that just like the last 4 or 5 of them, then it is going to flop.
You can only fool people so many times.

So far, tons of competitive gamers have shared great interest in Brink, hoping it will bring back the good ol' days of competing in CS leagues and whatnot.
So we shall see how it plays out.

I honestly cannot wait for clan matches in Brink. I tried call of duty clan matches but they svcked because teamwork did not factor in at all. It was simply about skill with the gun...tactical skill and strategy played no part. (Except for the clan's whose "strategy" was which building each player would camp!) Brink looks like it is going to change this. I honestly think a team in Brink that works together well but isn't as good with guns can and will beat a team full of lone ace killers. And that is a beautiful thing.

I'll try to answer some from my reading (this is just my understanding, some things may be wrong).

Mapping - I'd say it's unlikely due to the SMART. The nature of SMART means that while making a map, every object placed has to be configured to react properly with the player, making creating a map a very exaustive work, and that could lead to many bugs in movement. Also each map has many objectives built in, which the creator would have to do as well.

As for server costumisation I'd say it will be easy and complete as the developers have said they are using "necvars" to make adjustments to the game on the fly. These necvars is a small text file uploaded to the servers. IMO these should also be able to be aplied to a single server, thus giving acess to pretty much all the game configuration (up to SD on how much is configurable via necvars).

Depending how I do, I intend, if I'm decent at the game, to find and join a casual clan.

It's, for me, more about the fun. But I can see great potential for competition as well. Same goes for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Great game, excellent fun, and a good competitive edge. And the more I hear about Brink, the more it sounds like the next generation of competition.

If as said, the competitive community will blow up.
