Play Daggerfall in skyrim!

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:57 am

Hey guys, I just had that monstruously genius idea. You remember games such as Doom3 where you could play tiny videogames within the game?
What if we could do that in skyrim?

Let's say, I don't know, a book, that retrace the adventures of the daggerfall character, when you activate it you get a popup (or a more nicely done animation with the camera focusing on the book) with a playable version of daggerfall! lore speaking it's just words in the book, could be the imagination of the skyrim character picturing how this happenned etc.
That'd be swell, I'm getting tired of typing lines in dos box before playing.
Yes? no?

Not a terrible idea.

Wouldn't want it in the vanilla game though, good potential mod.

While that would be AWESOME and a super cool little thing to hide in the game, I doubt it. It requires Dos to run, so they would either need to rewrite the games to be compatible or include some kind of functional and lightweight Dos emulator like DosBox. Besides, They are both already free from Bethesda off their site (which may not be available as they haven't updated it since Skyrim's announcement), so there would be little point to go through the trouble.

Add spears instead (y)

Or what if W'aiq the Deceptive gave you some skooma, which would give you hallucinations so you'll hear Daggerfall's music and the graphics will change a bit.

I wouldn't mind if they had something similar in the game. Not having Daggerfall and Arena but being able to play through little segments in other eras when reading a book about it (not all of them, obviously) or learning the history of the Dragonborns via a playable "flashback" sort of thing.

This is actually a good idea. Live the stories through books.

I think you're using the term "monstrously genius idea" a bit loosely here.

Daggerfall and Arena are too long and complex to embed in any game and I don't think any other game would fit as well.

What I do like is about your idea is that you mention to implement it in "special books".
It would be nice if you have an (optional) feature for some books to start a movie, or to have moving pictures and an audio recording where an actor does the voice of the writer on every page.

It was on purpose =]

Actually, I'm not that exited seeing a movie or something. One good stuff would be you get "teleported" in the the body of the book's protagonist for example. And play as him.

Moving pictures, if well implemented in the pages of the book with a cool ink style animation would be nice though.

Use a frontend like D-Fend Reloaded, you set it up once and that's it.

No.
It would be much better if Daggerfall (and probably Arena as well) was remade so it can be played on newer systems or something like that and that you could play it as normal game.

I'm reminded of the LucasArts game Day of the Tentacle and how you could play the original Maniac Mansion on a character's computer. Of course, both of those games used the SCUMM engine so it wasn't quite as difficult to pull off. I'd rather the extra few hundred megabytes of space be used for a more noble cause, like crossbows. :P

I would like a questline or two perhaps that explores the backstory behind Jagar Tharn or the events of Daggerfall, however.

I don't type anything in when starting Daggerfall. It just starts up, DosBox takes care of the rest.

I don't like the idea personally, but I will be calling any idea I have "monstrously genius" at every opportunity. :)

You mean something like metal gear solid 4 where you go back through shadow moses from metal gear solid 1?

Ummm... You do realize that the games-within-the-game in Doom 3 were simple little affairs? Daggerfall is hardly a simple little affair.
