Play Morrowind & or Oblivion Before Skyrim?

Post » Sat Sep 10, 2011 10:24 am

Just wanted to see how many think Skyrim will be better enjoyed by playing its predecessors - Morrowind and Oblivion first.

I'd play both, if you have enough time left. They're both huge.

Depends, they both have a few hundred hours worth of content if you decide to do EVERYTHING.
I hear Oblivions main quest can be done relatively quickly since the whole game is level scaled. Morrowind would probably take a good deal longer since it's not level-scaled and has no fast-travel.

You could just read UESP lore from top to bottom, IF you let′s say can′t stand those miserable animations in Morrowind...

Just make sure you play morrowind first, because going back after playing oblivion, or learning on oblivion and starting morrowind after can be akin to repeatedly slamming your head into a wall.

If you play Morrowind on PC, get the mods for better bodies and faces. Whether you want to play them rather than read through the UESP books depends on your tolerance for old graphics. On the plus side you can put Morrowind on a little netbook which is quite handy.

Great games, but I think you should play Skryim first, then go back. Just for the sake of having that completely new experience.

Oblivion, because it's impossible to play both before Skyrim. Well, maybe not impossible, but if you do all the sidequests and explore every last inch... Oblivion can be completed feasibly in the time it takes for Skyrim to come out (or at the very minimum, the main story and 50% of sidequests).

Well, what we do know is that Skyrim will have more factions than Oblivion at least, so that's a good sign towards more content.

You'll get used to the lore, and learn about the history and mythology. Overall it will make Skyrim a more rewarding interesting experience- but no, its not needed, as it would be with other series'.

If you were to choose one, go for Morrowind. As far as RPGs go, Oblivion is somewhat uncreative and bland, though still very good.

The textures are the least of the problem, on this we agree...

You should really play both Morrowind and Oblivion before Skyrim. You certainly don't have to, but both are great games and you'll not only learn about the story and the lore, you'll also get to see how the series has evolved over the years.
Then if you really want to dig deep into the franchise, you should play Arena and Daggerfall as well!

I haven't played Daggerfall or Arena yet, I'm ashamed of myself! :P

Well I've played both, but really have no intention to play either between now and 11/11/11. As far as thinking it should be necessary for someone who may have never played MW or OB, no they wouldn't need to play them. Sure there is a ton of Lore in both games that may be helpful, but I'm sure Skyrim will cover that also.

I don't understand why he has to be up to date on the lore before Skryim. Why can't the OP learn the lore while playing Skyrim rather than catching up on it with old games?

Nah...Morrowind already consumed about a 1000 hours of my life. Oblivion? Not a fan.

For a new elder scrolls player? sure, why not. It's not vital, by far. But it might prove fun.

I never played arena but dagger fall was my favorite TES. They've been stripping features since. I'm optimistic with things coming into the game instead of our with skyrim.
