I am new to this and would like to know how to start playing, if you must have friends to begin with, please

You don't need to have any friends. You just click the multiplayer button and there you go. There is a filter for new recruits up to level 5. You can filter the server browser to this setting and it will show you servers only with people with level 1,2,3,4 or 5. If you are skilled enough, just go to any server you'll find. However remember, you can't kill someone with nova, whilst he's aiming a jackal on you...
