Play as someone else?

I've had this idea for a TES game in the future, DLC, or whatever. So, here goes. To make this easy, I'll use Skyrim as a reference point. I think it'd be interesting to play as another character for a brief time during a quest, possibly during a MQ. For example, let's use the Skyrim MQ. Alduin's return has also spelled the return of the Dragon Cult, and they are quite zealous. They ambush the Dovahkiin in large numbers(infinite to be exact) and are many levels above him. Once he loses all his health, a Draugr uses some kind of a paralyzing shout and you fade to black. The Blades find out what happen and set out to rescue the Dragonborn. Esbern takes the lead and Delphine is your follower. Esbern has a set level with his own inventory, perks, skills, spells etc. The cultists are going to sacrifice the Dragonborn and you have to rescue him before that can happen. Once you do, you revert characters.

Do you think this could work in a future game or DLC? I think it would be interesting if done right. It should only happen once for one quest. L.A. Noire did it pretty well. For the entire game, you play as Detective Phelps, but in the last few missions you play as someone else(but someone who is directly related to Phelps and the MQ in general)

Heck, if Bethesda wanted to, they could also do it from the perspective of the villain as well. Play as a high ranking Thalmor agent who has to hunt somebody important down and extract vital plot information. Once that's done, the PC somehow intercepts or eavesdrops and discovers what they need to know.

I think Bethesda has the capacity to do this and do it well. What do you guys think?

Many people would despise such a thing because it takes the immersion out of the game.

Sure, let's take Role Playing out of the Elder Scrolls series.

No. This is exactly why I despise what Obsidian did to KotOR 2. They constantly forced us to play as other characters in the game. And I mean not just once or twice, but continually. There was a scene in one part of the game where the developers force us from one character to another character to another character, one after another. And not one of them was the character I made and wanted to play.

Even worse, one of them was a character I couldn't stand and had left on the ship for the entire game and was hoping I would never have to see again. To be forced to play as that character was the final indignity for me. I stopped playing and uninstalled that game and have never played it again. That was one of the most wretched gaming (I won't say RPG, because that game was almost an anti-ROG) experiences I have ever had on a computer. I never want to experience anything like it again. So, no.

Lol - you said infinite 'to be exact'. Sorry, maths joke.

In all honestly, I don't like this idea - taking the player away from the character they moulded seems to violate the genre and make it some COD rip off. It kind of makes the whole thing impersonal. It's fine to have a forced capture, but you'd need to play as the Dragonborn all the time - it's a USP of TES.
