Ok so I played Arena and Daggerfall

Post » Tue Jan 22, 2013 8:20 pm

And I had so much fun I couldn't keep off it! ^^

Yet I noticed something while playing this that has been brought up numerous times by so called 'hardcoe' gamers and true RPG gamers. (God willing I would choke the hell out of myself.)
Its the fact that the games weren't as hard as I was made out to believe. And believe me I played hard games. (even today I still do, but not because of the 'hardcoe' but because why not?) It took me at least under an hour to get out of the Imperial City sewers without a map. The enemies weren't that hard if you knew what to do. Or how fast you actually learned the game through playing it.

The games were fun, I knew where to go, I knew what to do, riddles to solve, puzzles to play. Maybe its me but the game pretty much already covered the details on what I need to do. And the words alone are as much hand holding as my mother telling me what to do before heading off to the store to get her goodies. (In other words, it's simple.)

Now I'm so casual I don't give a damn. (except when I am playing Dark Souls I go ballistic) Who cares if games do or don't hold your hand? At least it was enough to be fun. Both in gameplay, visuals, story and environment. It's like Jak2, it's hard in some parts but you know what to do. (Though this is a completely different game so idk it counts.) but I had fun! It was something I really enjoy it. Same goes for Final Fantasy, or Star Wars Kotor 1. You know, the GOOD Star Wars RPG game. Sometimes they are hard, but they kept it simple, they kept it to the books on how to make it fun.

So... I guess what I am trying to say is, I just had fun. I don't care if the future games are as much hand holding as the old games, but I don't see the difference. XD

Daggerfall and Arena was fun. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was gonna be but I enjoyed it none the less.

Arena was where it all started for me.... my first-ever RPG. And then Daggerfall.... which I played for *years* :D

You need to play Battlespire. And Redguard. People have very mixed emotions when it comes to these two, because they
were meant to be beginnings of spin-offs of the Elder Scrolls, and pretty much....failed, in that respect. But I still liked them a lot.

Ahh yes I remember watching those walkthroughs.

I found them fun too! Spin off games need to be polished a bit, but they are great for fleshing out history and lore and new interesting characters. ^^

That scarab puzzle in Redguard was absolutely *ingenious*. And Battespire soundtrack! I still have it on CD
and listen to it from time to time. Especially this, from opening sequence:

Link takes you to the playlist of the entire OST.

And this, from Daggerfall. Special mention.

I agree! I had the same experience. Perhaps prior experience with other TES games prepared me a bit better for Daggerfal, than people who started with Daggerfal from the get-go. I was a bit meticulous, definitely, but I found it fun, and only occasionally difficult at times.

I started playing these games this month. I was really thrown off by Daggerfall's many overly (IMO) complex dungeons. It is quite impossible when your quest location or object is well hidden behind a concealed door... But ever since I found out about the quest location cheat codes I started abusing them. And now I don't have a problem with it anymore.

Now the ugly stuff is being said let me move on to the good stuff. I simply LOVE these 2 games! For Arena I am simply delighted to be able to visit all the locations I wasn't able to visit in other games. Then Daggerfall, those truely grand and beautiful cities, amazing soundtrack, horse and carts, your character history, the factions and political powers, it probably has the most "complete" game world I've ever seen. With Arena, since it's the first that started everything I simply liked it for giving the series such a good start, but Daggerfall is just too impressive that makes me feel excited knowing some game this wonderful exists!

The only problem I have is that I can never have enought time to play these games! They are too good so I try to reserve long time blocks just for them but it's often very hard to come by...

Yeah, I don't think they're nearly as tough as some modern games. There's a steep learning curve though, which you really don't see anymore, it's all 'pick up and play'. :(

Daggerfall is certainly harder in the sense that you can get lost at every turn in a random dungeon, or in the wilderness. Most people I've talked to who have claimed to have given Daggerfall a thorough chance and didn't like it, however, haven't been able to hold up to scrutiny at all.

A friend of mine claimed to have finally played Daggerfall and he said it was OK. Come to find out, he didn't know how to attack by moving the mouse, he didn't know how to cast spells, and he never left the Privateer's Hold. A large portion of my friends refuse to play anything with dated graphics, let alone low pixel counts with sprites, and probably don't even know what pixels or sprites are. The only difficulty with Daggerfall is either the lack of capacity of the player to play older games, or the shallow criteria which is so evident in gamers who have never gamed prior to 2004. It's also very much a PC game, which most console gamers tend to be intimidated by.

Daggerfall had an amazing soundtrack.... Very nostalgic to hear it again.

I find the Daggerfall soundtrack to be the best TES soundtrack. I have no nostalgia for the game, and its soundtrack is more suiting to my tastes. It has the tons going on in each track, and truly feels like an adventure on its own. This kind of soundtrack that sounds a bit like what you'd hear from an older Dragon Quest game wouldn't work for Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim, but it sure is amazing. I might just respond better to soundtracks that have so many things going on in them, though. I used to like classical music as a child due to it having so much going on in each track, at least the Beethoven stuff did.

I agree that Daggerfall isn't that hard. Most people who say it is probably just played it when they were younger or when they weren't used to that kind of gameplay. It certainly is difficult at first if you aren't used to how it is played. I found Arena much harder, but not insane in how hard it is. It's just lacking any form of gradual difficulty as far as enemies go. I can end up fighting something way too over my level in that game too easily. The dungeon in the beginning feels more like a perfect place to grind levels, though. It isn't that bad.

I play on the easiest difficulty settings, and even though these games are considered hard, I just see typical first person RPG difficulty that was common for the time of both games.

I adore Daggerfall. By far my favorite TES game.
