Played Beta - My thoughts...

Post » Wed Mar 05, 2014 5:47 am

I tried to see if there was an official beta forums, but I have yet to find any links in my emails.... so here it goes. My thoughts....

First off, I love the previous Elder Scrolls single player games. When I logged into this game, I was quite impressed with the graphics, and was very excited, but unfortunately, that is all, and I found it hard to stay interested in the game.

My initial though to the game was that it is unfinished and has not taken into account any of the hard learned lessons from previously released MMOs.

The questing... while each seemed to be a story in itself, and while the story was interesting, I found the experience very unsatisfying, especially when it came to the rewards. I chose a sneaky character, and wanted to dual wield. Most of my quest rewards were items I didn't want... ie staffs, 2h weapons, etc. Please, make it so you have a choice in items. I see nothing wrong with letting us choose between a 1H, 2H, or light, medium, heavy armor rewards. The fact this isn't an option make me believe the game was rushed into production.

While progressing through the various quest lines, some of the final quests, or "mini bosses" seemed very difficult, if not impossible to complete with my class. I don't mind difficult, but at least make the reward reflect the difficulty.

I didn't find one random boss that dropped something cool. This is probably the biggest gripe I have with most MMOs. There should be some soloable content, whether its a random boss, or solo dungeon that offers some fun stuff. Maybe I was unlucky and just didn't find what is out there. This is something that I never had a problem with in the single player games!

I missed not being able to interact with everything like in the single player games... all books, all bags, pots, bookshelves, etc.

Was it me, or was there an option to see a combat log, and exp per kill? I know this wasn't something available in the single player games, but I may not only want to quest. I may want to grind, and not knowing how I am doing is a problem.

With that said, I am still looking forward to the game. I just want to be offered something special... not just pretty graphics and a less sophisticated system than whats already out there. Learn from the others and make this game great! The fan base is there (a fan base that will not allow the "this is an MMO, not a single player game excuse), but if you take away everything that was great in the single player games, I'm afraid you will just have another MMO, just like all the rest, but worse.

How far did you level up in your beta experience?

I only got to 10... leveling was slow, which I certainly don't mind, but I found myself mostly grinding my way through it without anything new to find (mainly weapons). I think through the whole quest line, I had 1 1H sword as a reward. I did have a couple of daggers, but they were in the lower levels. I don't remember how much time I had played, but it was probably at least 24 hours total.

Try the fighter's guild quest line or the mage's guild quest line. Some people are complaining about them not being able to do those in a group, sounds like those are what you are looking for.

Quest rewards: the game is not quite based around loots. New weapon with better damage is good but else then that, its not a big deal. You can craft after the first island the weapons you want without investing points into blacksmithing. Else then that, youll start finding more and more items usually end up with testing everything before reaching lvl 8. Other mmos have conditionned us about loot and the importance of quest reward but in this game, the loot isnt everything. For exemple a high level light armor chest got like 74 magicka on it when your mana pool is like 1100.

Difficulty is being adjusted for those earlier quest where bosses were hard. So no biggie for that

you can interact with alot more once you are off the starting islands. I often can look bottles, some mats, most crates, sacks etc. I think they just dont want everything to be moveable because youll enter somewhere and it will be in chaos everytime from people having fun tossing objects.

Yea I got to 10 too before I just did PVP from there on until the beta closed.

I didn't like the game at first but at about level 8 or so I started getting addicted. I also didn't get very many good rewards. I got a decent Fire staff for my sorc and then I got a nice bow and that was it pretty much other than random loot.

The beta was to stress test the server farm, not the game code. There is a huge list of improvements already in the works in the private beta.

Also on the topic of loot: make your own :D
Crafting is very viable, it just takes a bit more time and effort.

That is great news! Thank you all for your great responses.

Damanta - I will definitely be exploring the crafting options at release. Because of the beta, I was trying to experience as much as possible before close.

They are trying to steer you in the direction of crafting to get the best gear. Or, really hard group quests.

They don't want good players slamming mini bosses for elite gear.

You may struggle with those bosses, but many people don't.

I played Lotro to level 95 and the best loot comes from the toughest quests you'll ever see. The rest is junk. And crafters also make the best gear, and best food.

This game will be no different. Expect anything you gain solo to be melted down or sold.
