Played Daggerfall For the First Time

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:01 am

I installed DF and played the game for a few hours but found it overall to be a frustrating experience. However, I do have some questions:

1. How is it that (most of the) women in DF, in all their pixelated glory, manage to be sixier than their hi-res counterparts in vanilla Oblivion?

2. Is the door unlatching sound the same as that used in Oblivion?

3. What's the purpose of the upstairs area in some houses when there is never anything up there?

4. How is it that on one occasion, when I approached one of the aforementioned sixy females, her profile picture in the dialogue screen made it abundantly clear that 'she' was in fact a 'he'. Was that a prophetic reference to Oblivion? (See point 1 above).

5. Why are there cows grazing within the towns, yet in Oblivion, cows don't exist? (I think we can forgive Morrowind for the lack of bovines....can't we?). That was actually two questions. Moooooooving on......

6. How do trees, shrubs and plants know which direction I am viewing them from. They seem to have lost that ability in Oblivion. Why did these sentient plants not spawn into Oblivion....? Are they not THAT intelligent yet?

7. Why are the doors in dungeons indented into the walls, and made for anorexic avatars? I started out as a Barbarian with 60 strength. It's hard enough getting just one of my legs through let alone the rest of my body. Why am I being discriminated against!? OK, I did get the game for free but that doesn't mean that the imperial architects can scrimp on the dungeon building costs. Give me some room!!!!

That's all for now. There may be others.....

I lol'd.

They actually didn't lose that ability(the trees), its just more subtle. The leafs follow you as you turn if you're standing in a bush, try it sometime.

Answers in bold. :D

I installed DF and played the game for a few hours but found it overall to be a frustrating experience. However, I do have some questions:

1. How is it that (most of the) women in DF, in all their pixelated glory, manage to be sixier than their hi-res counterparts in vanilla Oblivion?

Because the faces in the portrait are actually more realistic than Oblivion's cartoony faces. :D

2. Is the door unlatching sound the same as that used in Oblivion?

Yep. It's the same door sound used in many movies and other games as well. Actually, this door sound has been in every Elder Scrolls game to date. From Arena, Battlespire, Redguard, Morrowind and Oblivion. Will it be in ES:V? Hmm

3. What's the purpose of the upstairs area in some houses when there is never anything up there?

You mean the attics? It's a favourite place for quest-NPCs to show up. If you are asked to find a lady in green in a residence that has an attic. Look in the attic first. Some attics also has cupboards with undergarments. It's always fun to steal people's underwear and sell it back on the Black Market.

4. How is it that on one occasion, when I approached one of the aforementioned sixy females, her profile picture in the dialogue screen made it abundantly clear that 'she' was in fact a 'he'. Was that a prophetic reference to Oblivion? (See point 1 above).

Haha! You'll see that many NPCs, mostly quest-related, love to change six when in combat.

5. Why are there cows grazing within the towns, yet in Oblivion, cows don't exist? (I think we can forgive Morrowind for the lack of bovines....can't we?). That was actually two questions. Moooooooving on......

5a. The people of Cyrodiil built their cities way too small to house a cow or pigs. They are now forced to import beef from High Rock and Hammerfell. :P

5b. Sure, we can forgive Morrowind. Because they have guars. :)

6. How do trees, shrubs and plants know which direction I am viewing them from. They seem to have lost that ability in Oblivion. Why did these sentient plants not spawn into Oblivion....? Are they not THAT intelligent yet?

They say the Emperor sees things normal people can't. Thus, he controls the plantlife to make sure you are doing what he asked of you. Making sure you don't dump Lady Brisenna's letter somewhere in the wilderness.

Ask that to the architects hired to build the huge Yeomcroft Farmstead. Instead of building an actual farm, they designed a full set of corridors, traps, torture rooms and huge halls. No wonder it's now called Ruins of Yeomcroft Farmstead.

That's all for now. There may be others.....

Because the Dev at the time here hornier and less retrain from having all the lawyers, game raters and soccer moms breath down on their back. You should really read some of the books they written ingame (not to mention hokers were suppose to be ingame but the service is taken out; npc still exist in Inns).

2. Is the door unlatching sound the same as that used in Oblivion?

I wouldn't notice; I just figure the sound the Dev use in Daggerfall is from the distribution to all media. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1094523-daggerfall-sounds-in-other-places/.

3. What's the purpose of the upstairs area in some houses when there is never anything up there?

Quests and maybe some loot to steal.

4. How is it that on one occasion, when I approached one of the aforementioned sixy females, her profile picture in the dialogue screen made it abundantly clear that 'she' was in fact a 'he'. Was that a prophetic reference to Oblivion? (See point 1 above).

Eh, what? Probalay a bug unfix or its a feature.

5. Why are there cows grazing within the towns, yet in Oblivion, cows don't exist? (I think we can forgive Morrowind for the lack of bovines....can't we?). That was actually two questions. Moooooooving on......

I probably bet they are not really concern on adding many other things as well (like the printing press for the Courier, Pigs, an actual Jungle). As for Morrowind, the whole place practically live off of Kwama Eggs, not to mention there isn't really any suitable land for the Cow to graze.

And make sure to steal any paintings you might see. Because you have topless girl pictures. And I am serious. :hubbahubba:

Oh, yes. I forgot about the time I was in a tavern and opened a door to find a naked, tanned & very well endowed female sitting on the floor facing me with her legs splayed & a gleam in her eyes. I laughed out loud. DF must have been set in the TES equivalent of the 1960's - free love and all that.

@ Cliffworms: Thank you for your most illuminating explanations; although I found the bit about the underwear a bit disturbing. Well, I guess it's OK to ROLEPLAY an underwear stealing character (did you create a custom class for that?) as long as you get those tendencies out INGAME..... :shakehead: :hubbahubba:

Because the Dev at the time here hornier

Perhaps we could arrange for a delivery of viagra to Bethesda to help them add the 'sixy' back into TES:V

Oh, I actually have an answer for that one. See, it wasn't designed by imperial architects. Blame those darn Bretons and their stickfigure frames. See, its just their way at getting back at the nords.
