Played through GOTY and both expansions on 360.

I'd read a few posts on boards like gamefaqs that suggested it couldn't (or shouldn't) be done. I wanted to say that, in the absence of an appropriate gaming PC, it can and should be done. While I experienced some very sporadic freezing issues and long load times when loading a save, the game otherwise worked perfectly. And while I drooled over videos of the graphics mods you PC users get, I found the visuals to be quite serviceable when I got the game working on the right TV with the right settings.

What a fantastic game. I played every quest from every faction (except House Telvanni) and I think I got most of the misc quests as well (per the UESP). Really Really glad that I didn't let the age of this game scare me away after playing and loving Oblivion and Skyrim. If you loved those games, I can't recommend Morrowind enough.

I wasn't aware there was some common belief that it couldn't be done. I played it quite a bit on my 360 before I got it for PC. For the record, a lot of people don't even use the graphics mods or even any mods (See Who Plays Vanilla Morrowind thread), there's no reason to believe the game is unplayable or even undesirable without them.

Personal experience: old classics are generally still great games, regardless of how many people talk it up to be nostalgia. I've tried many games that are old for the first time recently and have been throughly impressed by the gameplay, from Fallout to Total Annihilation and Stronghold. I still consider them some of my favorite games over top of newer ones, and play them regularly. Gameplay > Graphics

Very, very well put. Morrowind, even vanilla Morrowind (maybe especially vanilla Morrwind?) has something almost no modern game like it has: the chance to fail at things. While I realize that seems strange to some folks, it actually does wonders for enhancing that sense of accomplishment we all want. "Wow, I just did that... and it was hard!" I know the later titles are "hard" in their own ways, but even in Oblivion your on-target hits actually land every time (unless blocked)... in Morrowind, you can swing away and do a great job of fanning your enemy to cool him off, but that's about it sometimes! Ha ha! Failure. I do wish they'd bring it back, but I don't think they ever will.

But yes, I agree with this post emphatically. And thanks to my awesome wife, I now have an XBox 360 of my own for a purely vanilla experience! Yay! Best of both worlds! I'm a happy guy today!

This brings back memories for me - my first Morrowind experience was on the original Xbox. The vanilla game certainly never lacked the ability to enchant/ensnare a player, on PC and console alike, and I don't think the passage of time is really ever going to change that.

My boyfriend of seven years dusted off his copy one day and enticed me into trying it by talking up of all the miles of text I'd get to plow through, haha. "It has books, ingame." he said. (The man knows me too well. ) Hooray for awesome partners! :D

This. I have loads of old games that I love just as much or more than the new ones. I even buy old games sometimes, like Geneforge I got recently, and it is great fun.

The only reason why I would not want to play it through on xbox is lack of console fixes if you encounter a bug that prevents you from continuing. It is rare though, and is no reason to think that it is un finishable on xobx, just less desirable to face the fact that your entire game might go poof to something that could otherwise be fixed on pc. I do not have Morrowind on xbox, but I do have oblivion and Skyrim, I play both on there from time to time and even though I HATE oblivion leveled system, it is nice to have it there since it does not CTD all the time due to it hating my newer video card. So the xbox version can sometimes be more desirable.

Lack of mods does NOT make this game un fun, mods just increase the lifespan of the game. I played it through 3 times, once for each great house before I ever used a mod. Even now, almost all of my mods are just graphical changes, tweaks and fixes. The biggest changes I have are greater dwarven ruins, and a couple house telvanni addons. I also install the black mill after I finish tribunal, other than that, nothing that really adds anything large to the game. The only mods I feel are ESSENTIAL, are a mana regen mod, and the beast leggings mod (boots for beasts, for when I play one). Perhaps the Morrowind code patch would fit into the essential category now, but even if I did not have it, I would still be able to love the game with just those 2 mods. Being able to cast spells without putting your weapon away is addicting though >_<.

I have to agree that it's quite playable and very enjoyable on the 360. there are load time issues (mostly on initial load) and the occasional freeze, but I played full through MQ, several factions and Tribunal with much enjoyment. this was after years of playing on PC with graphic updates and mods.

most people that reply to the "should i get this for xbox?" threads focus on the few negatives and jump right to pumping the PC version. PC version is a hands down better overall experience with code patches and graphics overhaul, but for me I don't have my PC hooked up to a 52" TV and sometimes i just want to play on the big boy while laying on the couch with a controller and vanilla GOTY is just what the doctor ordered!

A lot of gamers have become graphic snobs. personally I don't care about graphics as long as the gameplay and experience are solid. I tend to play my nintendo, snes, n64 and psx games just as much if not more than my newer gen games. Call it nostalgia if you want, but a great game is a great game regardless of release date and graphical limitations of that time.
