Player apparel customization in the next Elder Scrolls

Post » Fri Feb 04, 2011 2:26 pm

What was Daggerfall's apparel customization system like?

It is very similar to Morrowind's, but some pieces of clothing can be worn in more than one way and there are cloaks. For an example of wearing clothing in more than one way, you could choose to have a cloak's hood up or down as well as how you wore the cloak in relation to your shoulders.

The more possibilities there are, the better. That's an obvious choice.

Daggerfall.

The ability to wear/wield 12 enchanted jewelries already sound sixy enough.

Agreed.

All players LOVE to personalize things. Makes the character more of THEIR character.
Edit: WTF. Where did MY post go? I guess the mods are trying to keep these threads dead, can't blame them.
Just a recap:
In Soul Calibur 4 you could change the colour of your armour using a Colour Palette, which was way easier than the sliders from Facegen. Same deal with eyes, hair, skin, socks, even underwear. The colour palette contained all possible colours, brightness, and Saturation. Along with that there was 1st 2nd 3rd and even 4th colours.
You could combine all sorts of armour and clothing from socks, underwear, shoes, greaves, chest plates.
You could chose from a number of preset voices with pitch correction.
Lastly there was muscularity and physic sliders. Muscularity would add darkening of skin in obvious areas to make the character look muscular, and physic would increase their bulk.

The more the better. But I'll be satisfied with a level equal to that of morrowinds. The oblivion simplification of armor (and weapons...) was just not cool.

What I really want is (obviously things like seperate pauldrons etc.) but also I think it needs an expanded Fable like weapon system, so that both you're bow and sword, or two swords or whatever you choose are displayed on you're character at once. Either opening the inventory or using hotkeys and having a weapon appear on you just looks and feels really weird to me, and takes me out of the game.

The worst case of this is attacking archers. They put their bow on their back, which then dissapears while a dagger pops into existence on their waist, and then they draw it. It's really disconcerting.

Also, sheathes for back weapons.

I'd like them to have very high customization but I don't know if they'll be able to pull it off without waisting resources. So if I go by reasoning I'd say Morrowind customization but I hope for the Daggerfall level of customization.

In my opinion more customization options and [realistic] clothing choices can only be a good thing. I would like visible belts (with changeable sheathes for your weapons) , shoulder armor that isn't attached to the chest armor , visible rings, cloaks , an option to wear a robe or overcoat over your gear too make it stand out to blend in(plus lets mages wear light armor under their robes) , a way to have your other weapons visible on your person when they aren't being used (So of a ranger character i could have a dagger and sword displayed on my character while holding the bow and with quiver for my arrows).etc.

Personally, I'd like the customization to be deep enough to allow for certain apparel to become personal, and representative of style and character. I never really felt that the whole mix and match business of the past two installments (Morrowind much less), ever really allowed for an individual's choice in apparel reflect who the character really is, or draw and reflect attention, which brings up perhaps an interesting possibility of appearance affecting social interaction. Also, I find it rather impractical that the player could somehow manage 250 lbs. of equipment in an apparently invisible wardrobe/draw-sack, mixing heavy equipment with delicate apparatuses, fragile potions, squishy and pungent ingredients, and etc. Curious...

Daggerfall. Same reason Orphaniz said, and I miss cloaks. Granted that problem was fixed with mods, but it shouldn't have to be.

A lot of customization. I like the fact that in Oblivion you can see the rings and amulets your character wears, but that is about all Oblivion did right in this department. I would like to see cloaks in TES V. Real, physiqued cloaks that are not just planks attached to your back (sorry modders, I know this about the best that is possible for Morrowind and Oblivion). We already have software that can manage this, so why not use it?
It would be nice to have far more jewels. Bracers, earrings, more rings and stuff. Of course clothing under armour and robes over it and so on.

Who actually voted for LOW customization? Seriously, I want to know why.

Well, making it is much easier. If you have your armour consisting of 7 pieces you have to take care of a lot of possible clipping issues. You have to make sure that no pair of greaves will clip through any cuirass and so on. If you use Fallout 3's style, things are much easier and thus might allow for more unique and in a way wilder creations. Have you ever noticed how most of the greaves in Oblivion look more or less totally the same? I guess that is due to this limitation. But I guess that this can be solved with today's tech and some thorough modeling work.

Cloaks are an absolute must. Not capes. Cloaks fastened at the front. Templar mantle style. With optional hoods.

The main problem with high levels of customisation is clipping. Fable 2 was going to have optional belts across the character's torso right up until launch. They tried to get rid of the clipping issues all through development and never managed to get it fixed with the vast quantity of clothing options in the game.

To reduce the work of the dev team on TES:V the most important thing is to consider which way round the clothes are going to be layered. I would imagine that it will be clothes as the bottom layer, followed by armour and then cloaks over the armour. However, with spiky armour clipping issues are going to be a problem. If the cloak and armour interact through the physics system then the cloak would have some ridiculous bulges, but if they didn't then bits of armour would poke out. Of course the sensible option would be to get some fashion sense and stop wearing heavy armour under cloaks <_<

With shirts I want to be able to roll my sleeves up. I want to be able to tuck trousers into boots. I want to be able to dye all of my cloaks and clothes and light armour.

Jewellery is a tricky one. I would say stick to one or two amulets and two rings, if only to stop things getting overpowered. Of course with unenchanted jewellery there's no reason for a cap.

So yes. At the very least Morrowind customisation. Cloaks are a must. Anything extra is very appreciated, but dyeing would be nice :3

Very high. I would like gloves back.

Also, I want hats. Especially hats with feathers on them.

And Beast race specific clothes if they use the Morrowind system.

This. I want headgear that doesn't make my hair fall out. Seriously, if I go to the Bard's College and there isn't at least one outfit like http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100419180156/witcher/images/thumb/a/a8/Tw2_dandelion.png/278px-Tw2_dandelion.png, I'll probably cry.

And belts. Preferably, belts I can see.

I think Bethesda does well in this area. What I'd really love to see though is technology that made clothing designed for default and what are sure to be a variety of "better" bodies interchangeable. Perhaps that's just not possible with their current engine, but clothing that adjusted to whatever body you happen to be playing would be lovely.

Clipping.

But if they left out pointy bits that get in the way of cloaks and only had clothes that were tight at the waist to allow belts we wouldn't lose anything. Oblivion had just this, as it had to accomodate for quivers and two handed weapons and mix n' matching clothes.

Very high.

What I want in the next elder scrolls... from most important to least important.

  • I want more apparel, like left/right pauldrons, gauntlets and boots. I also want capes, cloaks, scarves, masks, belts, hats more jewelry (circlets?) and other things to wear.
  • I want different ways to wear my clothing. Tucking pants into boots, shirt into pants, roll the long sleeves of my shirt up, wear a robe over or under my cuirass etc.
  • I want more apparel slots, so more apparel can be worn at the same time. Suit of armor, shirt, belt, pants, skirt, robe, cloak, scarf, amulet, rings, mask and hat should be possible to wear at the same time, adding an open helmet would replace the hat, adding a closed one would replace both the mask and the hat, a cape would replace the cloak. Realistic, but not too limited.
  • I want clothing to look the same for both sixes, but they should fit for the body they are used on. I would also like to see more body options, instead of a default body that you can't change.
  • I want all apparel to be visible if not covered by another apparel.
  • I want physics on capes, cloaks, robes and other loose fitting clothing, that would look awesome.
  • I want to see some of my character's hair under hats, open helmets and hoods.
  • I want to wear several weapon sets at once, but have one "active one", and another one to be able to swap to fast by using hotkeys. Both sets visible on my character.

This would probably be hard to handle because of clipping and game limitations... but it would be cool, and it would be incredibly awesome. I hope for at least some of the

I hope they add wilder clothes that get away from the generic medieval clothes. If we go to Skyrim there better be a lot of furs and animal hides being worn.

Yeah, I don't care about hats, and cloaks ect. All I want is six things:

1. To be able to wield two weapons at once. Not so I can change between them quickly, but so I can wear them both AT ONCE. That'd rock.
2. Dual-Swords. Like Star Wars, Darth Maul. Get the idea?
3. Spears, darts ect.
4. Razor shield/shield battle system. Like blades around the shield to fight with and being able to knock people back with them.
5. And finally, gloves with blades attached. Like Volverine.
6. Ohh, and spikes on helmets for finishing moves.

We must not forget that its not only count for cusomization in armor, but also in clothes. For an example, the mythinc dawn clothes was all attracted together, the robe with shoes and gloves should have been seperate!

Player customisation is one of the best aspects of the game. Means you can play the unique character you want each time, so more replayability

So all the way
