On Player Character Voice

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:59 pm

This is one thing that has bugged me in past elder scroll games the sounds your character makes when they get hit never really seem to match up to how my character looks or acts.
I have seen in other games that during the character creation process you get to chose not only what your character sounds like but there personalty, I think this should be done in skyrim.

I agree, I want to pick my voice from a big list. No, not big, a HUGE list because in NwN I had a pretty big list and I didn't like any of the voices

I'm not sure if this was alluded to in your post, but I would love it if your character was fully voiced.... I wouldn't mind sacrificing control of my characters' personality for that. Although, it's a risk as I was never fond of the voice acting for Shepard in Mass Effect. Just never like his delivery, although it might have partially been the writing, particularly in the first if I recall correctly. however it's difficult to say as I played my female character in the second game and only partially through with my male Shepard. The reason for that is I preferred her delivery of those same lines even though it was obvously more feminine.

The problem with this is the sheer amount of races and the fact that you can be male or female, there wouldn't be enough space on a disc to have them all fully voiced.

WIth regards to the fully voice thing that was brought up.. I wouldn't like that... but yea, a list of voices for the various "grunts" would be allright

No, I like to get high and do the voice over myself.

If they do something like that, while we are choosing our voice, people around will think we are watching pormo :P .

Personally I'd rather they just be rid of those grunts and growls, rather than expand upon them. You're right about the fact that it's difficult to make them match up with our imaginations for what our characters really sound like. IMO, even if they added 20 different options for that voice, none would really be close enough for most of us, and it'd just be taking up some space that could be used to add a bit of extra content -- maybe some in-game books or something at least.

And I'm completely against full player voice acting for reasons that seem to be regurgitated over and over again every time the matter is brought up, so I'll save myself the time and effort of elaborating at this point.

Ok... sorry. I just hate having one way psychic conversations with NPC's, but I digress. I understand your reservations as I have them too, I would rather just risk it, but that's just me.

I'll deal with the grunts and such that you got in Oblivion, though choice would be nice. That said, doing full blown voice overs for my character would be them dictating my character in ways that I do not want. It might be ok or fit with a game that chooses your character for you, like Mass Effect, but the TES series doesn't do that. So it doesn't fit and I would be rather unhappy if they forced it on me.

"Absolutely not" to a fully-voiced main character, and I'm not that fond of even bothering with multiple "grunt voice sets." Most likely none of'em are gonna fit, and to be brutally honest I've gotten used to hearing my 6 foot male Nord characters squeak like little girls when they get hit.

I agree to a certain extent but I don't think they should be rid of it, it is very true that they could never match ones own imagination but they might get close.

I still feel like it could have sounded better with a different actor yet still like that he was at least fully voiced, but it was a funny scenario.

Uh big NO on this one because it adds too much to the memory and it would ruin the game. Also it would destroy any type of Roleplaying that you could do which is also bad.

This. Rather have them commit disk space to different voices for ncp's, rather than us.

not exactly on topic but. has any one made a mod that added voice acting for what you say to npc's. that would be a cool mod, provided the modder was good at voice acting or have friends with acceptable voices. just as an option naturally.

Voice is not determined by how you look or act...

That said, there are ten races of two genders. This means they already need to record potentially twenty sets of vocalizations for the player character. For each option you add you add twenty more sets. I don't think it's realistic to add much variety.

Well, I started with Oblivion as opposed to any of the other games, and all the racesl sounded more or less human to me, so I figured they could just have a male and female voice. However, I have seen threads with people wishing the non human characters returned to sounding more beast like (which I'm unfamiliar with considering my only Elderscrolls experience is with Oblivion). So I understand the reservations (more like adament dismissals really) especially having thought more about it. I still would prefer it though in hopes that the actor/actress used sounded good in the role, but I get, I get it... I'm the only one and that's fine. It'll either happen or it won't, and it probably won't since it seems an unpopular idea and I'm fine with that. I will play this game and most probably love it regardless since it seems to be fixing every problem I had with Oblivion and more (emphasis on the "MORE"). I can't wait... seriously!

I agree, it can't be that hard to record ten extra grunts.

Yep, this is so true. There was no way to make a young female character that didn't sound like an old lady... I hope they AT LEAST get better voices for skyrim than the ones in Oblivion.
