Player has voice?

Post » Thu Jul 15, 2010 5:05 pm

When I read the "dragon shout" part of the mag, something came to my mind... Will the player have a voice this time or will the shout be just our imagination? What do you think?

It would be generic voices per race. I'm pretty sure your character sounds like other people of the same race.

@migck: Did you actually just suggest that there would be only one playable race? :shocking:
I don't have the GI article with me, but if you check the list of confirmed facts thread, I'm pretty sure the whole "same races as always" will be in the list. I do remember that all the pictures show the same person in a funny looking helmet though.

I have the (horrible?) feeling that the PC is going to be forced to play as a male nord, with any possible aesthetic customization limited by that, which on the other hand would make voicing him a lot easier...
I'd rather be wrong, and I haven't really looked too hard at what media has been released about the game so far. Can anybody please prove me I'm wrong?

I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that different playable races are in.

The player has always had a voice, although they don't say much. (*grunt* "oomph" "gaaaaawwwwghblgabll")

This. We've always had a voice we have just had to imagine how our character would speak. I would love to have voice options for my character however given the massive amount of dialogue this game is bound to possess I can't imagine Bethesda giving the character a voice for anything other than the main quest line and maybe some important side quests.

I dislike having a voiced player character in any game, but in a TES game it would (for me) be disastrous, and it's the one thing that would make me not want to buy the game. Any voice (other than the usual grunting and ouching!) would make it less MY character, and more the developer's/actor's character, and that takes something away from my gaming experience. I have a good enough imagination (and I'm a bit hard of hearing anyway, most of the time I can't hear every word of dialogue in games!)

And for me it almost didn't work in Mass Effect, I hated femShep's voice so much (especially her snidey tone in ME2), it was more aggressive/abrasive than I would have liked to play the character. But then Shepard wasn't MY character, s/he was the character created by the developers. In TES, it has to be MY character that I play, or I won't play.

I'll just pretend the Dragon shout is infrasound and will not hear it.
As for grunting when wounded, please, PLEASE, don't make females cry like they're having fun with some guy! All games do that! I know most gamers are male, but come on, it's disturbing.

I'd love it if the player character were fully voiced (so long as it's well done and subtitles remain); an option to turn off the player character's voice would please all, no?

I wish dragons sound like Sovereign from Mass Effect  (still has the best dialogue I've seen in a videogame so far )

By everything that is holy in this world and the next, YES! :celebration:

I always hated how female elves sounded like they've smoked since they could stand on both legs. Their battle cries and reactions to pains sometimes led me to believe that I played as a dude.

Wait, body customisation?

I may have to go female for this one... :P

...an option to turn off the player character's voice would please all, no?

Its not just the voice (or the option to turn it off); Its the consequences of designing for the voice (at least for me). When they have the voice files finished, the dialog is set in stone unless they call back the voice talent to re-record any changes; This limits what they can add to the game afterward. Also (on PC) when I make a quest mod... Mine would stick out like a stubbed toe because the PC can't talk, and players expect him to.

I do like voiced NPC's, and if done VERY well, with a decent selection to choose from, I'd enjoy a fully voiced PC (despite what I said above); But I haven't seen it done for a game with that much interaction and speech.
