Player Houses/Stash Spots

Post » Sun Aug 22, 2010 3:46 am

One of my main gripes with Oblivion was that you needed to buy a house to be able to stash things, with few exceptions. Stash spots weren't in great supply, especially outside of towns. If you wanted to hole up in an empty cave, empty house (like the one in the West Weald), or empty campsite, it wasn't really possible. Aside from DLC, you couldn't really live anywhere outside of cities aside from White Stallion Hall.

Does anyone else hope that more Player Houses or stash spots can be found outside of cities?

It would be nice, but I would also like to see place repopulate with enemies occasionally so the world doesn't become totally lifeless. I am not sure of a good way of allowing players to take up refuge in any cave without removing that.

I think Fallout 3 got it right. There were houses that could be recieved as a reward but there were also lots of nice interiors to make into a home.

If I remember correctly there was a mod to have a bed roll that you could set up in a clear spot or a camp out in the wilderness.

It would turn off spawns I believe very near the area but when you packed up the spawns would turn on again.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. I feel like some places (very few though) should be left barren (like scattered abandoned wilderness camps) or something, or able to be cleared out. If you're able to clear locations out, it should be difficult to do.

How about you can claim various location around the world, maybe you raise your crest or flag above a hunter's shack in the wild, of course it would have to be limited so that you can't claim every location in the world, maybe only 2 or 3 at a time? And of course you can still buy housed and whatnot.

Yeah, the Portable Campsite mod is awesome, and something like this would fit in very well with Skyrim
It included:
Tent
Bedroll
Stool
Sack
Campfire
and each could be selected and placed how you like.

Did it work inside of a cave as well or only in the wilderness?

Ad an option to build/lock an entrance to any area? Either with or without magic?

I would like that option, but it seems like if you became good at locking doors you could just lock every dungeon up. I guess that should be something you can do if you want to though. If so I would also like there to be some key making, possibly being tied into armory skill.

Good question. I think it might, but I don't remember using it indoors.

I didn't really like it when I needed to buy a home. It was nice when you had the money to spare, but in my opinion they could have simply given you that shack near the waterfront (or just have it open to you for moving in).

I'd love to see more homes than just the one in each town though, ranging from abandoned hunter camps to maybe an ice castle (after clearing out the frost giant and his Riekling guards maybe).

I recall making a small mod that just had a tent with a bedroll, chest and campfire with a stool in the wilds south of Cheydinhall; just so my character could come across it and claim it as his/her own. Nothing fancy, but it felt good to have such places. :)

Unfortunately, TES4 made you reluctant about moving into a home because of the respawning loot. Not sure if this was just a rumor/lie, but I believe some people claimed that even chests in player homes were sometimes unsafe and would replace your items with common junk. One of the reasons I only used homes I've created personally or checked in the CS to see if they were safe. Better safe than sorry :P

I have been waiting for a civilized discussion on housing.
Oblivion gave us so many choices when it came to housing, yet since there was only one in each city I feel it diminished the Role Playing aspect for some players. I usually play as a Thief or a Ranger, and none of the houses in Oblivion seemed to cater to my needs. The very fact that all the residences you can own are in highly populated areas is a bit of a let down. I know many PC players/Modders such as myself are spoiled by wonderful housing mods, but this is not a mod discussion.

What I would like to see are more housing options that are based on quests, or simply rewards for extreme exploration. I mean, it is ok to pay thousands for a house and by no means do I think they should be hand-outs . . . however . . . I hate to go back to Morrowind as an example, but one of my favorite player homes was the Abandoned Shack on the small island outside of Hla Oad (perhaps it was another coastal town on the west shores of Vvardenfell, but whatever) ?? Wow it has been years since I played Morrowind so I am drawing blanks here, but those who used the shack know what i am talking about. It was small, quaint, out of the way. It was simply awesome!

Before I digress too much, I just want to clarify that I would like to see more Role playing variety with regards to housing in TES:V. It could be argued that Oblivion did just that (i.e. Bravil was a "Thief" town, so Stealth players could live there), but that is a stretch. There should be isolated housing, housing in heavily populated areas (where the heck was the IC house? Don't tell me the waterfront district counted because it didn't to me), and there should be something in between as well.

Just my thoughts on this!
