TV wins everytime.

Besides the fact that a decent tv costs a whole lot more than a monitor.

Hey I just wanted to ask, what's up with people using like 8 gigs of RAM? Isn't that ridiculously overkill? The only reason I can think that you'd need that much is if you were doing video rendering or something. I mean, are you guys that have that much using it for that purpose? Or do you think of it as future-proofing your rig?

Even if your TV is the same resolution your still loosing detail because your sitting +6ft away instead of 2ft is it still there? ya but are you seeing it nope
Depends on one's vision. 1920x1080 from 5' is still sharper, to me, than 1680x1050 from 2'. Also, at least with my TV, each pixel is substantially larger, somewhat negating the distance from the screen's impact on clarity/crispness.

Example: 1080 Planet Earth episodes on my TV do look sharper from my couch than they do sitting right in front of my monitor as their not downscaled to fit on my monitor.

Yes but it is better imo. It can also be used for watching movies and normal TV.

Or are you saying you would prefer to watch a dvd on a small monitor. A TV is more money but is much more flexible, therefore worth more money. You have a TV anyway right? So you may as well use it for everything it is capable of, rather than spending money on an monitor that isn't necessary imo.

Not really.. 8GB is pretty standard these days 32 bit OS's are not as common as they once were and growing less. And there are games out on the market that can utilize or require to have more then 4GB for a decent play. Arma being the top but even heavy modding of some games help alot. And of course extra RAM speeds up loading times.

Next gen should have 8GB if you have gotten a new PC in the last year you should have 8GB or more (mine can have 16GB currently only have 8)

I just got my computer a few months ago and have 4 gigs of ram and can play any game out there right now including Oblivion, both Fallouts, etc with tons of mods and loading times aren't an issue. But even if it did that's why I love computers. If I need more ram I just buy some, open up my computer and I'm good to go. Not like with a console where you have to buy an entire new system. Yea and I would agree that 32 bit OS are pretty obsolete. Anyone who's cool goes with 64 bit lulz

Well, my tower is hooked to a 46" HDTV as its monitor anyway, but I won't be using a controller. There is no reason not to be able to sit on a couch and use a PC too in this day and age.

Agreed. :)

Been doing that myself for, wow, hard to say, but easily the last 8+ years.

Blows my freakin' mind that so many people still think that PC gaming = playing at a desk, etc,.

Nope. No need for one in college when I can use my monitor for everything.

Ok fair enough like I already said it was only my own preference. On a side note I take it you must hate watching films at the cinema.

I use a laptop, with a controller. It's not good enough for Skyrim though (I'll buy for the PS3). One day I'll build a decent rig that hooks up to my TV with a wireless pad, when I've got some money.

I have an ASUS xtreme design motherboard M4A88T-VEVO/USB3(core unlocker, gpu boost, memok and turbo key II), a quad core processore 3.8 ghz and a radeon 6970 graphics card which has those 2 gigs of vram which also help. Reason I haven't gotten any more ram is because, like I said, I don't really have any reason to right now. I can play any game out there with the highest settings and load times are no more than a few seconds. And I know rams cheap I just haven't had the need to go get any as of right now. And that last sentence may sound a bit prickish, but in all seriousness I don't mean it like that. Hard to convey concepts and tone online without it being misinterpreted.

Called future proofing, reason why most games do not need 8GB right now is because there isn't a market to even utilize more then 2GB once new gen comes out and if it does have 8GB stock the amount of games that will require it will skyrocket and its better safe then sorry.

Do you have one stick of RAM what because can't find your mobo on newegg with it. I am guessin it only supports 8GB?

No I have 2 two gig RAM stick. Think they're from some company called Shark something or another. Anyhoo yea I can see where you're coming from about future proofing. It's just at the current moment even though 50 bucks isn't all that much I could put it to better use what with being in school and car payments and the like. But I ordered the whole setup from newegg I'll try n c if I can get ya the link. I know about an average assortment of knowledge on my computer, but my best friend is the expert and I'd be lying if I didn't say that he did most of the work in putting it together. I just made the list for the parts and bought em he put a lot of it 2gethetr,

Because there is a enormous difference between a cinema screen and a 46" tv? While there is not so much a difference between a monitor and tv.

How's your laptop running, I know MSI have a pretty big line of gaming notebooks. 285M is going on 3 years or a little longer and should still handle Skyrim quite well still.

Its running pretty good. Althought it has a gaming graphics card I'm always using my desktop for gaming, the laptop is to take to work, although I do have a few of my regular games on it.

From my experience Asus and MSI seem to do very good gaming laptops.

Now that's the way to do it! I used to use a projector also but now just stick to my monitor.

Desktop of course:

- Core i5 2500K OCed to 4.6GHz
- 8GB Ripjaws DDR3 1600
- XFX 2GB Radeon 6950 unlcoked shaders and OCed (basically Radeon 6970)
- Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37" 1080p LCD Monitor

Maxing this out should be a doozy...

Whenever I play something with as much depth as Skyrim I prefer the comfort and privacy of a desktop computer. My experience is that, unless that's what you ONLY have, a laptop is much more suitable for casual or inherently multiplayer games. You know, stuff you enjoy sharing with whomever you're with at the moment, like Worms or World of Goo ;) .

I've got my beasty desktop hooked up to a projector that throws an 80" image. Sidewinder x8 and Belkin N52 let me be as lazy and comfy as the rest of them. :celebration:
