How are people claiming a laptop capable of playing Skyrim is cheaper than a desktop?!?! Link me to this awesome mobile device please..

I was originally going to get it on 360, then get the GOTY for PC, but I got rid of live, and I don't know how updates would work without it, so I'm getting Skyrim on PC :). I wanted to wait and get the GOTY when I could upgrade my 2.4Ghz quadcore and 8800GTS, but meh I should be fine running it on high. I just hope Skyrim doesn't eff my FPS when I find a few patches of grass like Oblivion does.. that always ticks me off.. lol

Desktop(s), though I might hook it up to the TV and use a keyboard a couple of times. Can't stand to play games like Skyrim with a controller.

I'll just be using my normal gaming PC w/ monitor. may consider upgrading before the game comes out, but my current box will be fast enough.

A Laptop! I would get a desktop but my living situation is kind of on wheels, so I don't need another stationary machine to hold me back. Hopefully, I can still hook my laptop up to the TV here without many issues. I'm kind of worried about the placing of my laptop when it's connected to the TV. I might have to create a makeshift alter, or something. o.o

I'm planning to install it to my laptop, so I could play Skyrim anywhere

but, my laptop tends to overheat and shut down automatically if I playing games non-stop in about 2 hours

so... PC

Just my desktop, I've found playing on the 40" to just be a bit much, on the 23 you can really enjoy all the game.

Desktop.

Probably hovering about 60 or so cm from the screen, trying to cram all four of my heads close enough to bask simultaneously in maxed settings-TES-glory.

Plan on getting an Alienware shortly before 11-11-11

Don't. Biggest mistake I ever made. Now that they are owned by Dell, they are pieces of crap. I have $10,000 worth of machinery (2008 prices) sitting on the floor behind me collecting dust now. The only redeemable thing about it is the case, which I'm saving to rebuild a new system eventually, but this time I will do it, not paying someone else and especially not DellianWare.

I'll be playing PC as that's the only platform imo this game belongs on. Started with Arena, and been playing it on PC ever since. Bethesda might've forgotten about their roots, but we haven't. I just like the more easily upgradeable aspect of the PC, the editor and mods (at least for the recent few games), and the many other features that have traditionally resided with PCs until more recent gen consoles. Don't get me wrong, I love consoles too, but imo you haven't properly experienced an Elder Scrolls game until you've played it on a PC, especially once it's modded with top-notch, player-created content.

Two rigs. Skyrim will be on S:\, a Skyrim dedicated, SymLink'd, 24GB 34mm ExpressCard SSD so I won't have to maintain multiple installs.

Desktop (WEI: 7.3)...
Spoiler
  • Processor: Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz (OC:3.0GHz) <--Might spring for a Q9650 and put the Q6600 back in my Dell
  • RAM: 8GB (1066)
  • GPU: NVidia GTX 570 (1280MB)
  • Primary Drive: 256GB Crucial C300 SSD <--$225 on eBay! Woohoo!
  • Monitor: 1680x1050 Apple Cinema
  • OS: Win7(x64)
...and a refurb'd MacBook Pro 5,1 (WEI: 6.2)... (Need to enable AHCI so S:\ drive will work with Windows)
Spoiler
  • Processor: T9400 @ 2.53GHz
  • RAM: 8GB 1066
  • GPU: NVidia 9600M GT (512MB)
  • Primary Drive: 128GB Crucial C300 SSD (windows dedicated in optical drive slot)
  • Monitor: 1440x900
  • OS: Win7(x64)

Skyrim, I'm figuring, should run smoothly on both.

Desktop + 42" TV + Controller. Though I do like using the keyboard as well, it's just nice to rest my eyes from being that close to the screen...

I'm gonna be hooking up my desktop to my 1080p hdtv, then I will have a choice of either wireless keyboard and mouse or a 360 controller.

I'll be using the ol' desktop and keyboard. I didn't even know you could hook your tv up to your computer and play that way. I may have to look into how to make that happen.

Don't waste your money, build one yourself - its not hard and overclocking is accessible these days, rather than being an arcane science. Alienware is a pair of outlandish Nike running shoes in PC form.

How's your laptop running, I know MSI have a pretty big line of gaming notebooks. 285M is going on 3 years or a little longer and should still handle Skyrim quite well still.

Go spec the machine out on www.avadirect.com. I'm sure you can find a similar build in power for 15-35% less. Alienwares are powerful, but needlessly overpriced.

I hate to get in the flame line, but seriously, these people are right. From personal experience I can tell you that Alienware is a R.I.P.O.F.F. Please stay away at all cost. Their machines are WAY overpriced, and their customer service is SO bad. Alienware charged me $4,000+ for $1,200 worth of equipment and software. I paid them literally $2800 to put it all together and install software. My friends tried to tell me to build my own but I didn't listen. They even offered to build it for me, but I was svcked in because of the 'cool' alien head-style case. I mean, if the case is worth $2800 to you, then by all means. But otherwise don't go there. Be smart. You've been warned! Btw, the new machine I built two weeks ago (all parts from newegg) costs ~$950 including an ultra sleek Lian-li case. Parts are: Phenom II sixcore @3.2ghz, Sapphire Radeon 6950 2G, 8G Gskill Sniper ram, ASUS M4A89GTD mobo, 650W Corsair PSU, 650G seagate HDD, and sony cd/dvd burner. Even a little less aggressive setup than this would destroy Skyrim. I'd say with some research you could build a $750 system that would run all settings on high. If aesthetics are a big deal for you, do a little more research and get a case with a side panel window and some LED fans, sleeve and manage your cables properly and you will have a neat looking system that will rival ANY piece of crap that Alienware could put out. Hope this helps you change your mind about Alienware.

OP - I'll be playing on a desktop, specs mentioned above.
