ASUS G60 Republic of Gamers laptop hooked up to my 46" HDTV.

I have the G74, should run it quite well. But it does tend to overheat and shut down if i play for many hours at a time.. maybe have to invest in a cooling pad.

I might haul my PC out to the HDTV so I can play it on there. Will be using a PS3 controller either way.

Sandy Bridge-based Desktop* @ 1920x1080, 5760x1080 or 3240x1920... I have not yet decided. Probably the third option.

* Until next year, when PCI-e 3.0 is really here.

My laptop :D I bought the biggest, most powerful one I could find at the time...sure its a little outdated now, but still capable of running Oblivion on highest settings with graphic mods, so I'm positive it'll run Skyrim just fine.

Okay, I don't know anything about gaming computers or really much about computers in general. Does anyone have any recommendations for a gaming laptop that wouldn't be too expensive but was still pretty powerful?

You should go desktop, unless your hard pressed on mobility.

Well I guess I could. I don't have a lot of cash though and I was assuming that laptops were cheaper.

Desktops are much cheaper, for the power you will get. The most cost-effective way to go about it is to build your own. Guides and assistance can be found in many places online, even if you do not know someone offline who can help.

I think you get a bigger bang for your buck with desk tops. You can make a gaming rig for like 350.00 without breaking a sweat, and it will look better and load better than any console. Go up a little higher and you'll have somthing to be proud of. You can get a really nice rig for around 600.00, little less if you have an operating system and all of the peripherals.

The PCI-e slot has little to nothing to do with performance. Besides, actual cards doesn't even fully use PCI-e 2.0 bandwidth, much less PCI-e 3.0.

Plus, the first line makes no sense.

I hate to get in the flame line, but seriously, these people are right. From personal experience I can tell you that Alienware is a R.I.P.O.F.F. Please stay away at all cost. Their machines are WAY overpriced, and their customer service is SO bad. ... My friends tried to tell me to build my own but I didn't listen. ... I was svcked in because of the 'cool' alien head-style case. Hope this helps you change your mind about Alienware.

My story exactly, which is why I also posted my warning against it. I had the money and thought I would finally have a computer with bragging rights. Well, I did. For about a year. Now it's a $10,000 paperweight, and as soon as you need customer service is when you find out just who you got into a bad deal with. So I paid almost $1000 a month for "bragging rights". I had to go "low" this time around to replace my system. I bought one from Costco last week that is in many ways superior to my Alienware and it was a whole $700. Yeah. I was an idiot, but I won't make that mistake again. Plus Costco doubled my warranty and has a free English-speaking customer service and tech support.

[No offense to non-native English speakers by the way; it's just hard for an English speaker to understand heavily accented non-native English over a telephone, so native-language customer service is a huge benefit.]

Laptop + xbox controller (if I like it)

Doesn't the quality go down when you guys connect your PCs with a TV? We do it for AC and it kinda goes down a little.

Depends if your video card supports television resolutions. If you are playing at the same 1680x1050 resolution that you use for your 21" widescreen LCD on a 50" plasma then yeah, you are going to notice a reduction in quality.
