PC Players, will you purchase a physical copy or a copy thro

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:12 pm

Steam for me! Or D2D. Whoever has the best price really, but digitial. The only way I would buy a retail copy is if a REAL manual was included.... and I doubt that.

I bought new Vegas physical copy, and it just sits there. I've redoanloaded it about 4 times, and either way(disc or download) you install it your going to be downloading patches. With day one patches it can be close to 1gb, not that it matters either way.

I HATED steam, until I tried it when civ v came out. Now I don't love it, but I sure don't hate it. Just wish they lowered the price on new releases, instead of charging 50-60$.

Physical, because it's easier to install mods.

Physical, because I like it. Holding a physical copy with a nice manual and stuff beats looking at a folder on your desktop 1000x times.
Once the game is finished, it's also nice to look at the physical copy in your bookshelf. Reminds you of the great times you had with it.
It's also much better from a legal point of view, and because I'm a law student, I care about that a lot.
I also like helping the local economy and my town's game store.

Also, I don't like Steam or all that stuff at all. I want Skyrim and that only. Not any other crap.

... And that is why I'm getting a physical copy. The End.

My disk will still work in 10 years. I'm currently taking bets on when Steam will die.

Not entirely true. At any time, a disc can become scratched. And depending on the environment around you, discs will oxidize, potentially after 8-10 or so years. My copy of Morrowind no longer works because I kept it in my computer for too long, which is like an oven on summer days, and I have since then gone digital.

Physical copy. I'm a collector and like to be able to look on a shelf and see my collection of games/books/ect.

Haha, no it won't. Optical Discs are a surprisingly fragile medium and in no way suitable for long term storage. At very least take digital backups.

Definitely a physical copy. Partly because I'd just like to have one, but mostly because Steam is so darn slow at lowering their prices. It's always easier to get a better deal by ordering an actual physical copy a few months after release.

I guess it's physical copy for me, as I've already pre-ordered it to pick up at GameStop. Also, I really want another Elder Scrolls map for my wall; if that turns out to be available in the collector's edition only, I'll buy the map poster off eBay. I have every map poster since Morrowind, although some of the older ones are in bad condition, as well as the Morrowind, Tribunal, Bloodmoon, Oblivion, Shivering Isles, and Knights of the Nine boxes all lined up on a shelf. I enjoy not having to switch discs when I do download a game (the last two game purchases I made were downloads), but I like my Elder Scrolls relics.

i'm getting a physical copy when it comes out for the xbox.
but then when the price drops and i've decided i'm bored enough with it (i'll give it a year) then i'll probably buy it through steam so i can mod.

Physical media, because Spectre speaks truth. My 9 year old Morrowind disc still works well. Your discs will outlast Steam if you take care of them properly and not leave them laying around your desk or something.

I'm also currently taking the same bet Spectre is on when Steam croaks and dies. The sooner the better IMO.

Is that true? Because if it is I will not buy via steam. The TES modding community is too good to be left out.

Physical. Wouldn't have it any other way.
I will never be able to understand these Steam copies. It's like... You don't even own it...

it's not really harder with steam, you just have to go to the Steam folder first and then the game.

I don't know a whole lot about steam, if somebody could help me out.
If I buy the physical copy, but am still required to use steam to unlock/activate it to play, would that mean that if my disk broke or got lost, I could download it for free via steam? (Since it already registered that I own a copy)
Also, if the game requires you to use steam, would I have to keep an internet connection going all the time to play it? Or is it just for when you download/unlock it?

Thanks in advance!

Oh and just to inform you guys saying Steam is horrible - Even the physical copies will use Steam (Not to install the game, but instead of DRM)

Been confirmed multiple times by Todd Howard.

That also means you can't resell the game to the guy who said he was going to do so if the game turns out bad.

When a crack is available you can. And because it requires steam, when i buy the physical copy I will patiently await a crack so I don't have to be online. or running more software in the background to play.

It's just slightly faster to navigate to the folder when it's under the Bethesda Softworks folder, but it all works exactly the same. Chances are physical copies will still use the Steam directory anyways.

If navigation matters that much to people anyways, just make a shortcut on your desktop or index the entire steamapps folder in a library.

You cannot resell games that require Steam (because of one-time activation), nor do stores like GameStop buy PC games even if they don't use Steam. DRM is DRM, all PC games have it, and they all kill resell value. Steam can also be used offline just fine, the background processes are irrelevant because they barely encumber your performance, and if you're going to crack the game (that is, buy a boxed version, refuse to install it, and get a cracked version instead), that is still piracy.

I have cds and dvds that are still in mint condition that I have had for about 18 years. I still have my first CD which was Judgment Night and it still plays beautifully.

I want a physical copy of the game (Collector's Edition). That way it will be like having an early Christmas when I open my present and see all the neat stuff inside. :)
