PC Players, will you purchase a physical copy or a copy thro

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:56 pm

I like Steam but I'll buy a physical copy. Sometimes with steam it can be a pain trying to dig through the Steam folders to find where the hell stuff is installed so when it comes to adding mods I don't need the xtra headache. :brokencomputer: Also my Steam drive is getting full and Steam currently doesn't allow you to install on another drive. :sadvaultboy:

I always get a physical copy.

I want to hold it in my hands and put it on my shelf.

"Just re-dowlnload" is one of my issues. I'd rather buy a game from Amazon and have to wait for it to arrive during the week, than do a huge 5-10gb download which might take hours (or the next day, depending on issues) and possibly need to be restarted several times due to internet instability.

(Had to try my download of digital-only Mac Dragon Age from GamersGate three times to get one to actually complete. Man that was a pain.)

Downloading something like that once is terrible enough. Multiple times is just irrational. It's nice just being able to quickly reinstall off discs.

Yeah I agree about downloading big files. I don't really like it. My internet is sometimes unstable and that can cause problems.

I'll buy a disc....but most likely it'll be a steam game still do its mainly to save my download cap.

Also, that way i have the ability to re-install any time without require another 12Gig (or whatever it is) download.

I notice many people dont realise this, if the game is coming through steam on release day, and considering bethesda's current release. The phyical copy will be a steam copy aswell (aka, the game installs and runs through steam)......all the disc is for is to save you on your download....and to get the extra stuff, like a manual.

Well, if the physical copy requires Steam authorisation (and therefore a Steam account), I'd still buy it. Hopefully that'd mean I could (re-)download it via Steam if something happened to my physical copy.

Steam all the way. easy, simple, and no worries about cd drives burning out (which happens to me a lot for some reason). i hate having physical copies of games/music now. all they do is get nicked up and break, and then i have to go buy them again

physical. I'm not too big of a fan of Steam. Mostly because I have to share the internet with like 5 devices, and when a download from Steam is running, everything else slows way down. And besides, I can take pictures of my physical Skyrim disc and put it on Facebook xD

I will buy a physical copy. I want as little to do with Steam as possible. If Steam is required, then so be it.

I am watching The Witcher 2 forum regarding buying a hard copy versus a special download that has less DRM impact. It still looks like there will be a required 50 meg download to activate that game. I am still evaluating this concept.

I wonder how in love with Steam AT&T customers will be once they realize they now have bandwidth caps. I wonder how in love other internet users will be with it once other ISPs realize that they too can impose caps and charge you more money for their services.

For those of us who despise Steam, these caps are going to be a godsend because once they begin to fall from their lofty heights of 150GB/mo it'll be the end of a terrible service and more companies will go back to physical copies.

Regardless of my opinion on Steam ( I really hate steam... ) I'd by a physical copy. I like having the box, disk and map.

Physical copy. Steam's a great gaming platform, but 99% of the time I only use it to buy games where it's difficult to get my hands on a physical copy because it's an older game or an indie title. My only exception to this rule is Valve games because they automatically integrate with steam even with physical copies. In most cases though, physical copies are nice to have on hand, that way even if Valve fails at some point (unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future but still possible), I still have my game.

I'll buy the steam version on release (pre-loading is great) and I'll buy a physical version of the GOTY Edition when it's released.

That's a terrible thing to say. You shouldn't wish a service dead because of unfair data caps. Netflix, Hulu, Cloud Storage, and the internet as a whole despise what you just suggested. A service should close only if it's bad, not because you have a personal vendetta against it and want it gone.

Despite Steam being a bad service to me, I don't want to see it go (that would hurt many other gamers & I don't want that)
I just don't want it to be the only means to play PC games.

I find it fascinating how Steam has split the Bethesda fandom.

Welcome to internet access, Australian style.
We have ALWAYS had such mistreatment from our ISPs here.

You know what I think part of it could be?

Many of us play Bethesda games specifically for the freedom they give - you can wander the world, you can ignore the main quest, you can mod the game far beyond the point of unrecognizability.... you can almost literally do whatever you want. :D

And that mindset could well clash with the whole "....but now you're forced to install and run the game in this one way. Whether or not you like Steam, whether or not you like digital distribution, whether or not you bought the game at a physical store, etc."

Just a thought.

(As I've mentioned before... I like Steam, and it works well for what it does well - digital distribution, especially of small indie titles. It's a great option. I've bought games on it. But forcing a single player, fully offline, physically purchaseable in a store, game to be tied to it, is asinine.)

Probably a physical copy. I rather like the covers of the cases and being able to read through the little booklet. I also just hate Steam in general.
