Playing as a Blind Character

Post » Thu May 29, 2014 1:44 am

First of all, http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instances/500x/50148170.jpg

I just made a character who is blind. Or like, has the white eyes. I really want to try this. How would I got about RP'ing this aspect? I'm pretty strict when it comes to being lore-friendly, so I'm wondering how to play around the fact that I can see. And you know, I can't really close my eyes and play...do you think it's viable? How would you go about it? I think I remember Haggar posting a character who saw using magicka...kind of like how Toph from The Last Airbender sees through her vibrations in her feet.

That seems like a pretty good role-play

Too bad they got rid of the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Blind spell from Morrowind.
You can literally play blind if you wanted, although that would be very difficult. But 50-75% might be fun for a roleplay challenge.

There are some MW mods that made creative use of the spell though.

Get life detect and clairvoyance and use them all the time.

I played/ RP'd as a blind altmer girl named Kaileena. Both her eyes were fogged. She was not completely blind though. Otherwise how would you navigate and keep it believable? She could make out shadows, shapes. if she was in a dark room she could not see anything. her vision was almost black and white so if there was a light source then she could see the shape of things cast by the shadow. Her depth perception was not good and she could not make out details. Example she could see your shape in front of her but she would touch your face to know what you "looked like" she got good at feeling her way around which also allowed her to steal from unsuspecting folks.

Her vision was cured when at a later part in her story she became a vampire.

But it was a very fun and unique RP to play. She used illusion skills so combat was easy to avoid until she became a vampire.

Well I haven't never played as blind character just because of that - it's not viable to play with closed eyes. What if your character isn't fully blind but has lost most of his eyesight? That you could roleplay with having a cloth on your eyes which makes you not to see well.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/11356/?, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/27960/?, and I would say http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/15105/? are pretty good.

You probably want to spend most of your time at night, since you have an advantage if enemies can't see you but you can "see" them. Plus it will actually be dark and give you your desired handicap.

Turn up your SFX and voices to the max, and music very low or off. At least in dark areas you might be able to justify seeing near torches if you hear them crackle, and have bat-like hearing.

As a rogue, shoot arrows to hear where they land, and listen for people running towards them and talking. Get all the sneak perks, especially light foot

As a mage, clairvoyance and detect life. Possibly vision of the tenth eye as well. And attack with AoE spells, runes, frenzy, and conjuration since you don't need high accuracy

As a warrior, I would say go heavy armor and don't attack anyone who isn't nearby or hasn't made themselves obvious to you. Don't go out of your way to avoid traps.

If any build becomes a vampire lord, detect all creatures is good to have. Vampire's Sight I think can also be justified, since it's not natural sight.

You can also pretend that the books they read are written in their equivalent of our Braille. We, the viewers, read them in text, but they're feeling the bumps. That's how I role-play my blind character reading. Same if she's buying a book from a bookkeeper. She's asking, "Do you have a copy of The Oblivion Crisis in [insert name of their equivalent of our Braille]?"

She's a warrior, so I don't have her fight unless the other person is screaming (like they usually do when they want to kill her) and she can hear the spells/weapons. She only avoids traps when she has a companion who acts as her eyes and shouts a warning if she's about to get blasted by a fire trap. Same if there are enemies behind her that she is unaware of, providing if the enemy didn't shoot her first.

As for walking/running? It all depends, to be frank. My character isn't blind-'omg everything is pitch black!' She can see a little and the rest is up to basic memorization of where to go. If she's in a crowd, she walks slowly. If out in the open, she often breaks out in a quick jog.

EDIT: How do you work past the fact that you can see, but your character can't? Easy. You're just the person with the controller. A cameraman, if you will. You're watching your blind character do whatever he/she is doing. You can't talk to them, you can't interact with them. All you're doing is making them move around. The rest is in your imagination. How would a blind character in Tamriel handle things? How would he/she do this or that?

I have 2 blind characters, one is a master swordsman who is a werewolf so he has an acute sense of smell and hearing as well as a swordsmans situational awareness to get around just fine. The other is an ancient Altmer wizard who I RP has gone blind reading an Elder Scroll of knowledge and has mastered his magic to see the magical energy that emanates from everything on Nirn....think of a more powerful detect life magic that's always on.

I did this in Oblivion, and had my character wear an enchanted blindfold.

Pretty similar to that :)

wow! we all get the white eye option and know it's blindness, yet, I never even considered a true blind-guy playthrough.

lol, after being gone for some time, I get a simple piece of info right away, lol!

gotta love tes. now, if they'd just add more lore, more stats, more skillz, more possibilities, more... ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone. I appreciate the mod suggestions as well, even though I'm on xbox. :tops:

So yeah, I should have worded it better in the OP. This character's gonna be blind physically, but will still be able to see. As such, Detect Life seems to be the way to go. Fortunately I know how to acquire that right off the bat. I'm using magic (Dest/Conj/Alt) as well as warrior skills per usual, so like silverock suggested, Im inclined to choose Heavy Armor.

I think a shield would be a good idea as well for up close, since poor eyesight will make them more defensive?'

Lightning for fast range attacks, since I'm blind I won't have time to line up firebolts and ice spikes, and Cloaks incase anyone sneaks up on me.

Atromancy to be my guide when enemies are close.

Alteration for protection and sight, obviously.

i'm trying to think of some way to go in-game and to LENGTHEN the time you receive your magical gift of life detect. I've always found slowing down the initial part of the game and justifying my choices to be the most rewarding.

you'll get your life detect soon enuf regardless and so there are benefits to making it a worthy reward.

great idea! when I'm finally able to play skyrim again (grumble) a blind DiD run is obvious.
