Playing Crysis 2 on a Monitor via HDMI

Post » Thu Jul 28, 2011 2:26 am

Good evening dear community,

I don't know if I am the only one experiencing this issue, but I would like to appeal to you with this specific case:
Just recently, I bought a 24" widescreen LED monitor so I could enjoy Crysis 2 on DX11 a little more. My monitor is connected to my GPU (AMD HD 6950) via HDMI. This, however, causes two major problems:

1. Although "full screen" is selected, the images do not fill the whole monitor size. There are big black bars on all four sides of my display. When window mode is selected, the whole size of the display or monitor is used but... well, windowed.... ;-)
According to one fellow gamer, this issue can be "solved" by starting Crysis 2, selecting "full screen", exiting the game, unselecting full screen (=window mode on), exiting after doing that. Then, you start Crysis 2 once more and activate "full screen" again. Now the images should cover your whole monitor size as was intended. This procedure works fine with me, yet is it really annoying and time-consuming. Isn't there a better way to get "full screen" to work with HDMI? :-)

2. Another issue that drives me crazy concerns the monitor's refresh rate and the fps ingame. When connected via HDMI Crysis 2 forces my monitor or my graphics card to run in film-mode or whatever it is called - resulting in a max. of 24 fps which makes the game unplayable. Can someone help me with that issue, too? Do you have the same problems when playing with a 6950 and a monitor that is connected to it by HDMI?

I already asked EA Support for help. The very friendly and polite yet (so it seems to me) technically untrained advisors could not help me today (chat!). I am still waiting for an email from EA Technical Support but I am uncertain if they can help me...
Crysis 2 is the only game I play that has these two issues. My other games work smoothly.

What would you suggest? Simply changing from HDMI to DVI-D? Shouldn't there be another way?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Kind regards,
Akhrehn

yeah this issue i have too, with my gtx570. try out v-snc. every start i have to switch off it and monitor fps is 60hz then the game asks me to hold te resulution and i klick cancel and i still have 60hz. post processing is every start "custom?" although i want it in ultra. so i have every start the problem with monitor fps 24hz in dependent with v-sync and post processing not in ultra.

The 24Hz issue is definitely HDMI related. Crysis, Crysis: Warhead, and Crysis 2 all have 24hz forced on when you use an HDMI cable or a DVI-D->HDMI adapter cable. The only way short of Crytek releasing a patch for this issue (lulz, like that'll happen), is to either spam Alt+Enter to trick the game into running in 60Hz, or simply changing to a DVI cable. There is an issue with the signal with HDMI cables because they transmit the signal differently than a DVI cable(perhaps it is the HDCP causing the issue?)and thus the cryengine forces the game to run at 24Hz on the monitor. I'm personally tired of not being able to play any of the 3 games without a hassle so I've resorted to a DVI cable.

Thank you both for your feedback. "Good to know" that I am not the only one, if that would make any difference since a new patch for Crysis 2 is rather unlikely to come if I am not mistaken. ;-)
@ turko-1988: Yeah that definitely is a problem! I will try out deactivating and activating vsync like you suggested. Maybe that will help. Otherwise, thank you too, Teraunus, for your response. How do I force my monitor to run on 60hz while being ingame? Via CCC?
Switching from HDMI to DVI-D would be my final option. It is possible but would kind of annoy me a bit, since Crysis 2 is the only game I own that has these issues. Battlefield Bad Company 2, Cod MW1 and so on run so smoothly on HDMI. Will there be a difference in quality between DVI-D and HDMI on a 24" monitor?

Thank you in advance for your responses!

This is a problem that has been around since Crysis 1, Crytek know about it and no fix yet. I am having the same issue running my 120Hz monitor which defaults to 60hz in Crysis 2.

To fix this I have downloaded RadeonPro, made a custom profile for crysis2, then under "Tweaks" I have set the "Display refersh rate" to 120Hz

This fix has worked for me perhaps you can give it a try. I am using xfire 6870's via dual DVI-D to an acer GD245HQ. Give it a go ! hope it works !

For the past week I have played Crysis2, COD: MW, Red faction guerrilla and Just Cause 2 all using HDMI.

It was on a 50" plasma that is very picky about what it is being given.

The only difference I can think of is that I put it though a Yamaha Amp for 5.1 surround sound.

I also have a ATI HD 5770.

This problem disappears when you force triple buffering, you need D3D Overrider to do this, which you can get when you install riva tuner.

Why don't you just use DVI then? DVI is really sharp, don't even bother with VGA.

I see... so, can you tell me where to get RadeonPro, Experiment_In-Terror?
@ sll-mk.2: Do you refer to the first or the second issue? Triple buffering is de-selected in CCC. I tried to figure out what else to do and even sent an email to Crytek officials. It has not been answered yet, maybe I will never get an answer from them. ;-) But I had to give it a try!
DVI would be fine with me. It is just a shame that Crysis 2 should be the only game I play that does not work when my monitor is connected with HDMI. Changing "back" to DVI will be my last option. I will do that, however, if necessary. There is no big difference in image quality between DVI and HDMI, is it?

For ati cards at least, HDMI has never been an out of the box experience, like DVI is. I've stopped bothering with it, for many reasons other than wrong refresh rates and resolutions with games.

By the way, after several attempts to solve that problem in cooperation with EA Support advisors in chat and multiple emails to EA Support they finally confirmed that the HDMI-thingie is recognised as a known issue and has already been reported to Crytek. Moreover, according to a member of the german staff of EA Support, Crytek developers seem to work on it right now.
I really would like to believe that, however if ths issue has been carried around since Crysis 1.... ouch!

What do you think?
