Playing my first JRPG

So I guess you never played FFX and below.

I have tried to get my hands on a copy, but it's really not important to me. The ones before that, yes I have played. They weren't too bad.

No I mean Square Enix didn't exist until after FFX. ;)

Oh. Well, that's certainly true, though Squaresoft was starting to resemble today's Square Enix with FFX. Not a whole lot, but I believe X was the "transition title" to how the series is today. It was certainly the most dumbed down of the FF series at the time of release. I love it mainly for its story, which I think is the greatest plot in a JRPG ever, even if it is full of holes. :P

Oh dear, I think I just heard Spoony rage at the stars after I typed that...

I would prefer a horrible Mexican American accented dub of Tidus than the pre-pubascent one that FFX used at release for North America. FFX's story was rather bland and the characters were, to me, annoyingly indifferent. I would second "FFIX and below".

I actually like Tidus's dubbed voice. Anything else just...wouldn't fit the way his character looks (IE, he sounds as stupid as he looks). I think it would shock some people to know http://jamesarnoldtaylor.com/jamesarnoldtaylor.com/Home.html. Kinda makes you wonder.

Well, the fact that I just played that on speakers and the wife who was busy playing Yahtzee on my iPod asked who's fake laugh that was.. I rest my case. :P

Buying the game and the soundtrack would cost a fair bit more than buying The Last Remnant, though. There's even one guy on Ebay that tries to sell FF7 PC for $499! Although most of them had noticeably lower prices, but still more than a new game. Not sure about this as I never played the PC version, but being a 13-14 year old Windows game I'm guessing it's not exactly a piece of cake to make it run well on a modern computer?

It's that expensive? Well, I hope it's going to be included in the deal Good Old Games plans to strike with Squeenix. That would be grand.
Anyway, the game even runs on 64bit Win7, thanks to the ultimate version fan patches (and of course with the original music), which the internet, being punny of course, titled Ultima Version.

That's the thing that annoys me - people who found that scene bad (which is awkward even in the original dub) link it to other people who then think that the actors are trying to do a real laugh. It is supposed to be a fake laugh. Silly Japanese humour that just won't bloody work in a dub. I loved how they went a more Woolsey route with FFXII, and the translators and dub directors for FFXIII also had some nice ideas.

I hope the purists that dismiss dubs in general haven't scared Square away from the route they went with XIII's dub. The game's overall quality is up for debate, but I loved its dub. I liked the actors they chose for the most part and the work they did re-syncing scenes was a big improvement in my humble opinion.

Then again I usually go for dubs anyway. Only recent game that I felt I had to play with the Japanese voice track was Star Ocean: The Last Hope International. I'll probably opt to turn voices off completely if I ever pick up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zygDzAkothQ. ^_^

The US voice work in SO4 is atrocious, yes. I mean, the emotional hero is a standard for Japanese stories, but this was just a bloody whining weenie kid, all the darn time, and the rest of the cast just goes from mediocre to awkward. I feel with the Box players who wanted to like people in this game, I really do.

Whoever localized that should be taken out and shot. Not only are those voices laughably bad...but they couldn't even get the names right! It's Nicholai, not Nicole, and Yuri, not Uru. :flame:

It's someone close to the director of the dub. Here's a hint: HIS FAMILY.
It's the game equivalent of those poor souls who go to those casting pre-selection events for the big shows, because their friends and family say that they have such a great voice, and then get stomped into the ground verbally on the telly.

Huh...then I never thought I'd say this but...I'LL GET 'IM AND HIS WHOLE FAMILY!

Drat. All this time, I thought I was just dangerously treading the line dangerously close to being a sociopath. Turns out I've always been a psychopath. :P

Or perhaps they know they are localizing a super niche game, and their target audience will most likely switch to Japanese voices anyway, so why spend more money on competent voice acting?

lost odyssey is one of the best
great, great story line
do not like final fantasy

The player takes control of Kaim, a man who has lived for a thousand years and who has no memory of his past. The game is set in a world nearing a "magical industrial revolution." Kaim struggles with the return of his memories and the pain they bring.

one of the few games that made me cry during its story
and from what i have heard a few men also cried during this story
very moving

There are many, many people who play JRPGs and yet can't stand Japanese voices, mostly for female squeakiness. Or for the most common reason, that they just wouldn't understand anything and thus can't relate to emotion.
Also, Chaos Wars did not offer a second option. It's either play it horrid, or without sound.

Oh... wow. That is a great game but most definitely not a good first JRPG. It is actually quite a bit different from most traditional JRPG's and has a very unique battle system. It's a challenging game, hope you stick with it.

I have to agree with this 100%. Normally hate turn based combat, but I actually almost cared for the characters and plot, and that is saying a lot from me, so the fighting system didn't bug me at all.

I am Working my way through Lost Odyssey, and so far it is A great game. Impressive overall Voice acting, Well done-if common-combat with a little twist in combat, and -great- story. I would reccomend that game as your next jrpg, if you have an xbox360 and want to play more modern jrpg game/s. For some reason it reminds me of Lengend of Dragoon, probably because of the combat system, they are slightly similar(with the timing). Btw Legend of Dragoon is a great rpg as well, a gem of the PS1 era, in my opinion

In a lot of ways I was pretty disappointed with Lost Odyssey but as a whole it was a decent game.

The combat was fairly dull and straightforward though in the beginning bosses did pose some difficulty. Unfortunately that difficulty goes away and the end game you're pretty much invincible.

The character archetypes were really cliche and the story really wasn't all that great in terms of uniqueness (it was done fairly well but just not all that original).

Most of these problems stem more from the fact that I've played quite a bit of jrpg's where these things are commonplace. As an intro jrpg the learning curve is a little steep but that's mostly in the beginning and drops off quite quickly.
