Playing a necromancer

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:33 am

In my current playthrough, I'm running a Breton, mage sign. I decided to play him as a rogue necromancer (rogue in that he has no loyalty to other necromancers). Skill choice was pretty much standard Mage except that I traded Alchemy for Blade (Alchemy goes up fast enough if you make a lot of Recover Fatigue potions). I was wondering what items would be thematically appropriate for me to seek, and which spells should I get? Also, would he be risking his neck if I put a Necromancer's robe on him and had him walk around in public? I'm also currently going through the Dark Brotherhood questline as well as the Mage - so far my Fame is still above my Infamy. I thought Sufferthorn would be very useful for a Necromancer, but I intend to make something with Soul Trap so that I can fuel my magic items later.

After I stomp the necromancers in the MG questline, can I still use their altar to make Black Soul Gems myself, or do I have to go hunting for necromancers to kill and loot?

you can make black soul gems without even doing the quest

spells? illusion, conjuration, destruction, a little alteration. paralyze your foes, conjuration is a bit obvious, kill your enemies by either barbicuing em, or freeze em solid. alteration? breaking and entering gone magical.

*pssst* if your on the pc look up miniature necromancy revised, you can make skelingtons zombies and ghosts, good thing is that they dont disapear after 5 seconds.

If you're on PC, then "Moriarcis: City of Dead" and "The Sixth Element" are essential for you, if you want to revive dead NPC's to be your minions, or turn a pile of collected bones into a new servant.

You know, one of my chars is a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CsYyOz1idU, too, so I know what I'm talking about :)

The only necromancer's robe you can get is Mannimarco's, or you can add one with the console, Construction Set, or probably a mod. Members of the Mages Guild won't interact with you except to gripe about the robe, if you add a regular one; they won't care about you wearing Mannimarco's. Far as I know, nobody else will care about either one, including other necromancers (they'll still be hostile). Once you get Conjuration to 70 though, people will sometimes comment on how you "smell of death."

However, vampires sometimes have black robes, and I've found black hoods somewhere as well although I don't remember where (wasn't from killing named NPC's). The DB robes would probably work just as well. Might be worthwhile to join the Mages Guild and do the questline, at least as far as getting the Necromancer's Amulet -- you could always be skirting that dark side, then when you can't resist the temptation to wear the Amulet, you decide to keep it and go be a necromancer

For decor, if you have Shivering Isles you'll probably want to go find one of the shambles skulls, and go to Crucible to do Ushnar gro-Shadborgob's quest for the skinned hound pet -- since the hound is easily killed, it might be better as a container in your house.

I think that is wrong, you can find necromancer robes on necromancers. Mannimarco's robes are diffrent then the other necromancer robes

you can only use that mod if you have shivering isles, which for the computer i do not. so if you dont have shivering isles use miniature necromancy.

I can't do it either - I'm playing on the 360.

Well, if necromancer robes get me dirty looks (but no active attacks, apparently), I still have a weightless black robe I got off a vampire (I think). I could enchant that puppy and make it my armor. No hood, though, unless I want to settle for using my DB hood.

I could have sworn I'd never been able to loot a robe; then again, my characters tend to despise necromancy and wouldn't want to provide one for a vendor to sell to someone else. Probably it's just that I've always ignored them.

Probably so. You can loot necromancer robes, no problem. You can get your first one in the little dungeon ruins not far from the Imperial City, nearly immediately when you get out of the sewers. There's an Alyiad ruin inhabited by bandits and one necromancer, if memory serves. This is the one with the altar with the dead Kajjit bandit on it.

If you want a black hood you could go give shady sam a visit, or you could just loot a necromancers hood, they look no different and you would probably enchant it anyway.

As I said commenting my own video...who said that necromancers could only wear black and gothic-decadent-style outfits? ;)

necromancers are evil, they live in dark places and they wear dark clothes, been that way since they started up.

Nothing wrong with that. It helps that you don't stand out as a necromancer when you finally take over the Arcane University in your first step to TAKING OVER THE WORLD! Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-hahahahahahahaha!

Bah, I don't plan taking over the world. Just to convert everyone in a unwilled and brainless skeleton minion under my command.

Oh, wait, I guess that's pretty much like taking over the world...

I like it. :)
Where does that robe come from?
Oh and I'll be checking out that House of the dead mod as well. I've been thinking about a new character the past few days and I guess I'll be taking the evil mage route again, personal favorite. :)

Btw, I'm using The 6th element as well but the spell 'banish flesh' doesn't work properly (never high enough willpower). You know of a fix for that / does it work normally for you? I checked the esp in the editor and it looks fine there.
