Playing without Enchanting/Alchemy ?

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:17 am

I started a new game, and decided to restrict myself in a few ways :

1) Only use equipment I craft or find.
2) Only ever craft armor with the Ore I mined or found in the outside world.
3) Never enchant my equipment.
4) Never mix potions myself; if I need any, I'll need to buy them or find them.
5) No fast traveling, no carriages, horses only if at all.

I'm playing on Master level, as a Nord, dual-wielding Axes and Maces depending on the task at hand. I've been selling all the Alchemy reagents I find, regardless of what they do; the same went for all the Disenchantable items. I'm kind of disappointed at the fact that I can't "rename" items I craft or use unless I enchant them, but I'll live with it.

It's kind of a tricky way to play, but so far I've been having a blast. I suppose I'm roleplaying an actual Warrior, as opposed to a jack-of-all-trades.

Anyone else doing something similar ?

Yes, restarted few days ago, did everything pretty much the same (same skills, perks, etc, Master difficulty again), just decided not to put any perks into crafting professions or craft weapons and armor. I'm using stuff that I find through exploration and questing. I'm playing a ranger/thief so I'm using Thieves Guild starter set for now (at lvl 33). Right now the difficulty still feels good, but I did install a mod that scales enemies slightly higher and adds extra spawns - http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1288727-relwip-increased-spawns-loot-and-ai/ . The game is harder than the first time around, but I'm finding it easier because of previous experience - took perks like Power Shot/Ranger (Archery) and Silent Roll/Muffled/x3 bow/x15 dagger (Sneak) as soon as I could (also using some quality of life perks, mainly left branch of Speech tree and up to carrying capacity increase in Pickpocketing). I also don't just wander around, instead I'm going to new locations only after I get quests for them or a marker through listening to npc chat. To avoid temptation I'm using a mod that removes locations from compass - http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=391 )

For weapons it's easy to give them a trivial property and then let the charges run out. That way you can name them but it doesn't have any impact on game play. You can do that with basic enchanting (although you will have to disencant them).

For your armor you can put on bonsues that don't have any bearing on your character (e.g. blocking bonus if you don't block, or two handed or sneak or whatever)

That way you can rename them and it has no in-game impact
