Playing without magic

Post » Wed Aug 17, 2011 3:38 am

As hard as it sounds, I am going to try to not use ANY MAGIC WHATSOEVER.

This means I will not use the healing spell. Instead I will use the healing potions since it is considered alchemy.

I am going to try and make my character a magic hating warrior who's main goal (after being dragon born and saving the world of course) is to purge the land of magic users and all of their unnatural sorcery.

I got this idea sadly after watching the witch scene in "The search for the holy grail."

Who will dare try and do this? It will be hard, but I am going to definitely attempt it. I have a feeling that right when I start, I am going to use the healing spell after I get injured just out of habit.

You can certainly get a stronger character by focusing only on melee skills, but I still prefer to try all sorts of things, I like to level melee and magic evenly.

That's an interesting concept. I tried to make a pure archer/alchemist in Oblivion but I found myself too encumbered with potions a lot of the time. So, sadly, I admitted defeat and gave my character access to a healing spell. Which lead to me trying an invisibility spell(with an archer COME ON it just makes too much sense) and that lead to a conjuration obsession. I'm inclined to try again but it's pretty hard.

Who needs magic? Trust in steel! (Or glass, or Daedra...or Ebony)

Nah but really, I don't play many mages anyway, but perhaps I will strain my discipline to not use the heal spell at the first few levels just to avoid leveling up in that category in order so to build more points in clank and bang.

Sure why not. I plan to play a woodsman/archer/lone assassin type of character and will attempt to stray from magic aswell unless alchemy/crafting counts in your books.

I honestly have always seen magic as a sort of handicap.

It's like "oh crap I am about to die, I am going to run away and snipe you with my fireballs."

I always hated it in Oblivion when an enemy NPC ran away when they were a mage so they could cast a spell on you. I'm going come back and fight me you worm!!!!!

I don't understand this idea that magic is somehow unnatural in TES, outside of daedric summoning or necromancy it seems pretty well accepted as a part of the world.

In previous TES games, I never played a pure stealth or pure warrior character, but with 280 different perks to choose from, 20+ dragon shouts (with 3 different levels each, for 60+ different total effects), and deeper crafting options, this time I'm looking forward to trying a few warrior, assassin and ranger type builds that use absolutely no spells and no enchanting whatsoever.

With the amazing revamped character designs for all the races, I'm looking forward to trying out all the races this time. Previously, I usually played a Dunmer.

I did it once, but relying on alchemy for all of your healing needs leaves you carrying around a lot of extra weight. Not to mention the guilt for not increasing your intelligence by 5 points at every level-up.

A pure mage role was always tougher for me personally.

My main rp character in both Morrowind and Oblivion cast nary a spell.

So, I salute you Sir in your endeavor to abstain from the corrupting practices of the foul demon magic. :icecream:

My first play through is usually with no magic. Its too easy to rely on healing spells, and my main character I rp as in most games respects magic, but avoids it himself.

My second play through will probably be a pure mage to make up for it though. - I find there's enough content in TES games to love the first playthrough even without magic and so all the fancy spells and whatnot just make the second playthrough even better.

Yes sir! I am hopefully going to make this happen... I wil come back with a report of my success or utter failure when I have "beaten" the game.

I don't understand this idea that magic is somehow unnatural in TES, outside of daedric summoning or necromancy it seems pretty well accepted as a part of the world.

I know that... I was just giving an example, because usually magic isn't accepted.. but I am still going on a no magic in my elder scrolls rampage!!!!

That's the spirit! I am serious drooling over all the options we have now with all the perks. Even though it is a different concept, I am willing to work with something different.

You just need to toughen up. and who needs intelligence to bash in skulls with a hammer? My 5 year old cousin can do that and he isn't even in kindergarten yet.

My main rp character in both Morrowind and Oblivion cast nary a spell. So, I salute you Sir in your endeavor to abstain from the corrupting practices of the foul demon magic. :icecream:

Thank you kind sir!

This is a glorious day. You are the first one to ever offer me ice cream on the forums... :celebration:

While an interesting idea, I would not be able to do such a thing. Magic is just too awesome :D

I don't think I could live without magic, even know I never play a mage type character, I always use magic for healing and sneaking... and other things.

The only thing I got from your post, OP, is that you lack knowledge of British cinema. The film in question is the 1975 comedy classic "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

Anyway, this is an interesting idea.

What about Dragon Shouts? They're pretty much magic.

Sounds like it would be fun, but since there is a completely new magic system I'm gonna have to try it.

I play without magic almost always. As a thief I stole resources and relied on alchemy for potions and poisons, Other then that, My bow for attacking. As a warrior I'd also use alchemy as I'd constantly run past resources on Fighters Guild missions and mainly because hot keying the potions to my d-pad and pressing it to heal is a lot more combat efficient then actually casting a heal spell.

Magic's too good to just ignore - especially destruction magic

But nor will I ever turn my back on my trust in a fine blade

Spell in left hand, sword in right - that's my way forward

the only magic i am going to use are the runes you can place on the ground.... unless if there is another way to set up traps without magic... after playing fallout 3, land mines integrated themselves deep into my play style... and i play very very stealthy like in both elder scrolls and fallout.... i just hope that player placed non-magical traps make there way into the game... if thats the case then your challenge would just be a normal play through for me...
