A plea for Modders

Post » Mon Aug 08, 2011 11:35 pm

Hi all

and hi all powerful modders

after all the new info we got, we can safely say we have a general idea on how Skyrim will turn out, a great game that will set the bar YET AGAIN for others to follow

but because of time constraints, DVD space issues or just plane tech limits the developers at Bethesda seem to have abandoned some things that have become a gaming norm since 2004.

I will list some of the major ones:

1- Beast legs (time limit) which is understandable, because after all Skyrim has 10 races and maybe they just could not create unique animations and fix the clipping issues in time to make new legs for the beast races (games with beast legs are Morrowind, mass effect, wow take your pick)
2- Cloaks/capes there is still hope for these but I'm not holding my breath (games with capes/cloaks are AC, wow, 2 worlds take your pick)
3- No crossbows (again perhaps time limits, games with cross bows... every other fantasy game ever made, like wow, warcraft, diablo, Morrwoind, heroes, Hexen....etc etc)

all the above is understandable BUT....

4- AND THIS PISSED ME OFF TO NO END you can't see your legs in 1st person....now I was sure this was no brainer since we are in 2011 and many more lesser and older games did this (dark messiah, thief 3 to name a few) but it seems we have to be a floating ball with hands AGAIN

modders i ask you humbly, can you mod this ???!! can you add this feature to skyrim??!! cause this is a BIG deal for me and many other gamers I'm sure.

just tell me its possible. :sadvaultboy:

Don't worry, the mod community will do amazing things as it always does.

We don't know what will be easy or possible to do yet because we haven't seen the tools. But if the tools that come with the game aren't enough, rest assured people will MAKE the tools. It'll just take longer.

edit - but yea, there are mods that add cloaks/capes to both Morrowind and Oblivion, and also a mod for Oblivion that adds more beast like feet for the Argonians and Khajiit. I don't have the time to link them, go look on Nexus, the argonian one is called "Argonian Beautification" if I recall though.

As far as modding priorities go:

  • Eliminate the various forms of hand-holding, such as markers
  • Get rid of the arcadey text messages that appear below the compass
  • Move the compass to the bottom of the screen
  • Get rid of the stupid "DOVAHKIIN" battlecry, if it indeed exists in the game
  • Get rid of finishers and / or forced 3rd person finishers if they're not optional
  • Allow horses to be ridden in 1st person if this isn't an option in the game (which I fear it may not be)
  • Mod athletics and acrobatics back into the game somehow so I can actually roleplay as the character I want

I don't really want to see my legs....

I've never really understood the obsession with it. I'm quite happy being a floating pair of arms. If I need to see my legs I'll go into third person.

But seriously I've never seen legs implemented in first person and not look somehow.. wrong. Crysis 2 did them fairly well and it still didn't look right IMO. I think it's too hard to make look perfect and quite frankly I'd rather they spent their time doing something worthwhile. Like damn beast legs.

Eh, I personally don't like mods, but I can see why you'd want them.

Honestly, I don't think you needed to request these lol, they would have gotten made anyway.

To tell you the truth, this is the one and only thing that pisses me off about Bethesda.

They ship out a game that is buggy and incomplete and give out a construction kit so the users can fix it without pay. It is just ridicules in my opinion.

Morrowind was great then Oblivion came out and was extremely buggy and incomplete. This has brought me to thinking if Oblivion was like this who can say if Skyrim will be even worse then Oblivion in this regard.

I would like to see a mod get made that has just a HUGE DUNGEON, the likes of which have never been seen. To test the limits of dungeon size allowance...and to be a kickass place to explore.

Hey modders, is such a system bellow possible?

===========================

They need to allow players to make scrolls via enchanting.

The fact that it would feel like you're working with a piece of paper would be okay, because you'd actually be making a scroll. They'd be ballanced by the skill enchanting keeping it in check, and you'd need a large amount of items to make multiple scrolls of the same spell. You could even make casting a scroll a two handed endever, by having one hand hold the scroll and another cast the spell.

They could get away with the spells looking like color-coated balls of magicka because they could have a whole bunch of effects radiating from the scroll so the visual people would be happy.

And the best part would be that you could get better with it the more you do it.

Better yet mages could get another item to wield out of this, ie a magic book. Books could allow players to put scrolls into it, and then they would draw on magica rather than burning up the scroll after the use. So if the book was in you're left hand, clicking the attack button would bring up a hotwheel like the hotkeys for the 360 in OB.

Then the depth of spellmaking would be there but it would be optional rather than required. With the different varients and ways to cast on the fly, there'd be pro's and cons of the different ways to cast magic. I think that would solve most everyone's problems and worries...

In reality, no company or organization or even government has enough time to make games large enough to where mods don't help.

indeed

but all I ask for is to see my legs in 1st person I mean

I thought its a frigging given by now???

its 2011 for crying out loud, why do we still think floating balls with arms are a good thing??????

even if Skyrim was being developed for 5 years most games back then HAD IT

man I'm really pissed at this, the game was looking epic BUT this just pushed it down to good :(

its like making a kick ass car and forgetting to install the fuel pipe.

Well I wouldn't go that far.

I was playing The Chronicles of Riddike: Escape From Butcher Bay with commentary on yesterday, and they talked about seeing your legs in 3rd person. It really adds a cool effect to the game. The developers said it was somewhat difficult to implement, but turned out cool and could see it becoming a trend. The game (on PC) came out in 2004.

It really does upset me that Bethesda didn't put this in.

Is it going to really drag down my enjoyment though? Not really.

I like not seeing my legs in first person.

Lets me see the rest of what I'm looking for. In fact, my arms in the way is why I don't like first person. I can't see around me, only in front.

The only mods I want to see are improved textures, and lighting if it's possible.

And like someone else said, get rid of the stupid dovahkiin battlecry.

How the heck are any of those gaming norms? I'm sure modders will take care of some of them, but they certainly aren't norms.

well if the majority of games do them then they are norms

legs in 1st person view is a big deal for me anyways and it pissed me off
