A Plea to Modders

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:05 am

Please, please, please include all the resources and correct the paths when you release a mod. It's frustrating when you don't. It's glorious when you do. Your hard work deserves to be shown in the best possible light, right?

Examples? OK, here's one, with proof. Moriarcis 1.05 is missing "textures/creatures/Zskeletal Horse/ZGTclothB01.dds" -- its TES4Files error is:

I don't mean to pick on this one mod; Moriarcis is just the most current one which has done this. Fwiw, It looks like a fantastic mod; I really want to play it.

A missing resource reported that way is no guarantee the mod is actually using it. You may be looking at a situation where the mod packed MORE than it should have instead of less. You'll know soon enough if it's actually broken since a missing texture will be bright purple.

I don't think anyone intentionally leaves resources out of a mod. Haven't you considered that it might be a simple mistake? Reporting the problem to specific mod authors would be better than creating a thread like this, hmm?

very true. I don't think i know of a modder that intentionally leaves textures or other files out of their mod. Anyway just reporting the missing files (or that there are to many files) is the best way of fixing this problem.

A PM or comment in the mod thread IMO is the way to go.
It's not a common occurrence and in 99.99% of instances a simple oversight.
 I'd bet you have a hard time pinpointing another mod with the same issue, so why create a thread about it?

Aww I was planning to release just the esp for my next mod, and not release the meshes until I had at least 100 unique downloads, and then the textures after 100 endorsemants.... :P

I kid, I kid :D

Agreed, but that doesn't work as often as you'd think.

It's not a common occurrence and in 99.99% of instances a simple oversight.

Indeed. Most modders are quite scrupulous/conscientious.

 I'd bet you have a hard time pinpointing another mod with the same issue, so why create a thread about it?

Just going off the mods I've DL'd this week:

  • Banes Witchking Lair
  • Cheydinhal Petshop
  • Delivery Jobs
  • P-Froggy's Wall-Climbing
  • The Imperial Cemetary
  • Hagraam Estate
  • Thieves Guild HQ

*shrug* Anyway, since I'm the only person who's bothered, it's purely my problem. No worries, and thanks to all who replied.

Someone is bound to mention it, but you should take a pass on Cheydinhal Petshop. It has a nasty bug in it that can permanently mess up dialogue with NPCs.

Other than accidentally missing something which is a problem that should be fixed, I can see two other possibilities that don't need fixing.

1) As Arthmoor said, it might be an extra mesh instead of a missing texture. (OK, technically, including extra meshes is a bad idea too, but it won't break anything.)

2) Some meshes have textures defined that aren't actually visible to the player in-game. That component of the mesh might be disabled for some reason and in other cases the game engine overwrites the defined texture at run time. (That second case happens for skin textures of meshes that get replaced the the character specific skin defined by the race.)

I'm guilty of doing this ALOT.

It's obviously not intentional but if you're working on a large project over the span of a couple months, and you aren't a very "organized" individual things tend to spread out over different folders and hard drives.

Normally I release a file .. someone says this and this are wrong and I fix it pretty quickly. Mistakes happen.

Don't think I've ever neglected to add something that was needed but I am guilty of sometimes leaving in assets that I never used. XD I do try to catch them all.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8489 is perfect for this, automatically packaging the resources used/needed for a plugin.
