A plea to the devs: please allow us to disable head bob

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 4:52 am

I know many of you aren't affected by head bob, and consider it an effect that adds realism to your character's movement. However, for many others like myself head bob does nothing but induce headaches, dizziness and nausea, and makes the experience of playing some games so uncomfortable that we either have to play them in short bursts or avoid playing them altogether.
Developers will sometimes give players the option to disable the head bob effect so that people like me can play their game. Elder Scrolls Online is one recent example. I was very disappointed to find there is no such option in Fallout 4. Please, if any of the developers read this, would you allow players on all platforms the option of disabling this effect? I really want to play this game without feeling dizzy.

Yeah don't expect Bethesda to ever fix this. Looking at previous games they rarely fix glaring issues like these, especially if it's not an actual bug.

Wait for mods.

Luckily, I'm not one of the people the head-bob makes sick (probably because I adjusted my FOV). But I would like the option to disable it. I'd definitely turn it off if I could. But, yeah, I'm like Psychotrip. I kind of expect to just watch the Nexus for a mod to fix it soon.

I will add my vote to this. If not here (for hard-ceded technical reasons) then in all future games.

I've read it mentioned so I tried to pay attention to it in game. Honestly in this game it really isn't that noticeable to me. Other games really had a problem but FO4 is ok. I do see a little boob there though and I can see where it may be a problem to some. But yeah ... modders will have to fix this.

Agreed. Please allow headbob to be disabled, or just get rid of it. You’ve made the game unplayable for some people for the sake of an idiotic gimmick.

General gameplay in 3rd person is not as bad with the ini tweaks but the pip-boy movement is making me ill.

Could this animation be disabled as well?

I always turn off head bob in games where the option exists. I never understand why games put it in. When I am walking down the sidewalk or even running in the real world, the scene in front of my eyes does not sway back and forth.

And they see a lot more godrays than we do RL as well plus they see lens flares and I can't for the life of me remember the last time I saw a lens flare in RL ... oh right, never :/ Two things I ALWAYS turn off in games too.

I didn't notice it too much at the beginning but after playing for a while it made me dizzy and nauseated. If you are on the pc you can try expanding fov and disabling mouse acceleration. I did both and it helped a lot. I still can't do my long sessions but I can play better than I did before.

I, for instance, like the head bobing because it gives me the feel of actualy moving instead of just drifting along the landscape like a ghost (I play exclusively in first-person view).

So for me head bobing is essential. But it would be nice if it was optional for people that get health problems from it.

I have no idea what head bob is. Seems nitpicky to me. Some people really need to man-up.

Just making the point I've played the game 20 hours and haven't noticed head bob. Maybe I'm just too manly to complain about the little things.

Go into first person, watch the screen and walk forward. See how the image is moving back and forth? That's called head bob.

As for "manning up." Maybe I should "man up" and not expect subtitles since I am hearing impaired. Maybe I should "man up" and just deal with the head bobbing even though it causes some of us older gamers to get nauseous. Seriously, telling people to man up ...

Lol at your comparison. Suggesting nausea from a moving character in a video game compares to being deaf...

I am severely hearing impaired AND get vertigo if I play a game with headbobbing for too long so I believe I can make that comparison. Check and mate.

I have to add my vote to this. The head bobbing is very nauseous making. I've already changed the FOV and mouse acceleration and that has helped but I still am getting nauseous after a playing for a bit.

I imagine console players won't even notice as even with a big huge TV you are usually sitting like 10 feet away or so. It doesn't fill up your whole vision like sitting right in front of a decent sized monitor can do. And I know not every person has the reaction but I don't understand why there wouldn't be flag to turn that off. That is a very common feature in games.

FO3 I could barely drag myself away from. FO4 though (while I'm loving the game) I'm staring to get a aversion reaction to sitting down and playing it because of the nausea.

So PLEASE developers. Add a "Turn Off Head Bob" option!!!!!

I can't really play right now and it's frustrating.
