Please Answer Some Questions About Dcote

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:52 am

I ask to answer pair questions: 1. What Engine is used by this game? 2. In what language it is written? 3. Whether there are no editors for it? In advance thanks. :cthulhu:

It used the Netimmerse engineit doesn't have an editor, we created with several sepperate programs, each one programmed ourselves, not a traditional editor like what is common today.language visual C++ (as far as I know, but I was not a coder on this project so I might be mistaken)

thats mighty generous of you, if you make money the person that made the financial loss, and paid for development out of their own pocket was Mike Woodroffe btw. If you need to contact him I can help.

Since headfirst went bust, are any of the resources, materials or whatever you want to call them, such as sounds, models, textures etc used to make CoC DCotE going to come into the public domain, now, or at some time in the future?

unfortunately no, that is not how it works. When Headfirst went into liquidation, lawyers and government liquidation officials take over the assets left of the company which are then sold to recover some of the debts for the creditors. besides the equipment such as computers, and property the most valuable assets are the 'intelectual property' in other words the copyrights, which means it does NOT become public domain, and even if these are not sold remains with the original company even if bankrupt, since at any point if they get a significant offer for it the sale will go towards repaying the creditors. Copyright only expires after a long long time, 50 years, if no one has renewed the the intelectual property, which is unlikely since this is a sought after intelectual property, and Headfirst have only bought it for a specified time frame, which is a common procedure, so we can make any number of games with that property in that timeframe, but afterwards simply reverts to the original owners, which is Chaosium Inc. I believe. All the assets created for the game are copyrighted to Headfirst, not even the artist or programmers who created it have the copyright to any of it, as we have all signed something to that effect in our contracts.

So, is there any likelihood that Headfirst will release, any of the resources/materials as abondonware, or open them up to user-development?Also, what was your specific role in creating Coc DCotE?Cheers,Chris.

Sonofmortician:" the assets are aging quickly, and are not going to be useful for very long anyway, except for academic purposes, which is already possible if you just want o open it up and have a look under the hood so to speak."What do you mean by the possibility of looking 'under the hood' for 'academic reasons' - is it possible to examine the resources in some form of 'not-for-profit' mode?Chris.

yeah that would be Mike, but Simon might also know, Chriss was never the boss, he was the producer.

The reason I asked about the availability of the materials/resources is that if they were available, they could be used in creating fangames. Then maybe we would not have to wait an eternity for a CoC DCotE fix - not that a fangame would (necessarily) equal something put together by a large team over years.Sonofmortician/Ray: Are any of the hacked resources/materials available? Or fan produced copies of them?Chris.

I can ask Simon, I am not too sure how he'd feel about it, understandably that reminds him of a painful period and might be like digging up a dead cow.As for resources for a fan game, I don't know, if you can get them by hacking they can be used, not for profit unfortunately-copyright issues, but part of the problem is probably that a lot of it was made very specifically for DCOTE and might not be as versatile as say assets created with modding in mind like halfLife or Doom for example.

Adventuresoft was their previous company, and is basically just going to sell old adventuresoft catalogue of games, ie 'elvira','simon the sorceror' and 'feeble files' etc. They are tow seperate entities, so even one makes money it doesn't benefit the other so to speak.I don't think headfirst is ever going to be out of debt so to speak, since they don't have assets to sell anymore, just permanently bankrupt.

All the game models are so low-poly by today's standards, and the textures so low-res, that I don't think it would be worth anyone resurrecting them. If you want to create a fan game I think you'd be much better off starting from scratch and just using this game as a conceptual template.

Maybe its my eyes then! I thought the graphics were great, and the game looks good despite its age. Then again I dont have a computer that can play the latest FPS with the highest detail spec, so maybe I am just old fashioned.I love to have a deep-one texture however old it looked.Chris.

At the time of development it was all cutting edge stuff, however due to the many delays we were soon being overtaken by others with better graphical tech like Valve and their Half Life 2 engine, Doom 3 , Stalker Oblivion etc. We tried to make up for lack of tech through the artistry, but there is a segment of the gaming comunity who want their games to all have the latest bells and whistles, and it is very hard to keep them happy as the production cost soon skyrockets, and the tech is developing exponentially. At the time of release we were already starting to age, but by now it is almost retro. Anyone who works in a technology driven industry faces essentially the same problem, how to finish something with decent quality before it is redundant, we rather took our time and released when done, but even so at the end when it was time to do the PC port the company had gone bankrupt and two lone-wolves finished it off their own backs, which is also why that version had so many bugs, since we could not afford the time and resources to do more QA work on it, it was simply a choice of release it with 'C' bugs, meaning you could play through the game without progression stoppers, but have some issues which we ideally would have liked to solve. Now a decent amount of time has passed, the fact that people still show an interest in the game is encouraging since it probably means that the content resonates with people inspite of its technical flaws. But I can't help but wonder how the game would've looked if we could do it from scratch with todays much more powerful console powers, if we could it would still have the same resonance.

Ray,What can I say? You are more than generous, and we (me and everybody else on our fangame project) would be honoured. Could we do it justice though, that is the question? FPS Creator has strengths (for which we are using it), but it also has weaknesses. It only supports .x format, and I do not know of a good freeware conversion program. In any case, and as I have already echoed on the fangame thread, and help you can supply will always be gratefully received. If you ever do get together a group for a Dark Corners remake (more a like a sequel as you make it sound), I would like to be involved, if only as a playtester!Chris.

Hi Ray,I hear what you are saying regarding programming, but I dont think it is an option for me. I have always been a programming amateur, I dabble but on a very low level, and to be even more honest, at 32 I have too much in my life to dedicate to it seriously, and Im more of a creative ideas man.But of course woulds love to hear from you if you do ever remake the game, or anything else for that matter!Chris.

Ray,A man of your wisdom and intellect B) probably knows this already, but I opened DCofE with Dragon Unpacker, and although I have not found what to press to extract stuff (because no matter how many times I re-install Dragon Unpacker I can only get in French!), it displays the texture folders and all sorts of stuff.Chris.

Hi Ray,Below is a link to a download page (the first that came up on Google), and also a link ro what I think is the creators homepage. You can choose English as the working language in final stages of the instalation, but it comes up with an error (for me) and just uses French anyway.http://www.softpedia.com/get/Programming/File-Editors/Dragon-UnPACKer.shtmlhttp://www.elberethzone.net/dup-news.htmlLet me know how you get on.Cheers,Chris.

you mean if you got an A rank?, there was a youtube video of it once, it would good to try a search for it to see for yourself, but what it revealed was......SPOILER....that your dad was a Yith, and you (Jack) is half Yithian, hence the ability to see visions from the perspective of other beings, and the visions of Pnakotos the Yithian city back in their time, where the Jack Mind was transfered to a Yithian body incidentally at the time when Pnakotos was destroyed.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H6WGSVMGOA
