Please Bethesda No Telepathic Guards!

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 10:37 pm

The one thing I never understood in TES games is why they don't give you the option to intercept and pay off or kill the witness(s) of your crimes before they are reported to a City Guard. I know the game has quick saves and loads but come on.. No telepathic guards this time please! I think it would add to the realism and immersion in the world to interact with those who have caught you doing something dubious.

I'm fairly certain that psychic guards is one of the things that will be fixed in Skyrim. As a stealthy character player psychic guards was one of the worst things about Oblivion for me.

Well we have NPCs that aren't stealth ignorant anymore so I'm sure there will be no psychic guards. The AI from the reports we get from the articles, is really nice (mainly because now it's the full radiant AI that got cut from Oblivion and improved.)

I think that people pleading for this should have made them try to fix it, at least.

I think the OP wasn't really talking about the initial crime detection, but how all the guards in the past games seemed to share the same brain. And it doesn't look THAT hard to fix either, hell, back in the days, MGS2 had a better system: get spotted, and the guard that spotted you will attack quickly, then retreat to call backup.

Would be awesome though, if there was ONE guard that spotted you, and just as he's about to shout "help!", you silence him with an arrow in the forehead, making it so that no one knows you were even there

On the other hand, seeing a guard shout "I thought I saw something" when his best friend is brutally killed in front of him and you can even see that the guard turns his face to look at the corpse without a care in the world... I thought that was equally unrealistic.

They said in a recent thing that stealthiness has been improved.. The dynamic light (i think todd said) will hide you from enemies if you stay in the shadows... Then Radiant Story will probably fix the telepathic guards.. Well let's hope... If im going to be a mass murdering Argonian... I can't have the guards know where i always am... Also i believe if you have a wanted level of 5,000, then i believe they should hang up wanted posters and it would say...

(Title which would be your name)
How much your wanted as payment
Picture of what they think you look like, like the pictures of you in the newspaper in the game Hitman, it depends on how many witnesses look at you and survive..

Yeah that was pretty bad too, seeing a corpse should alert any npc that sees it as if someone was being attacked in front of them, they should call for guards, and search around in case who ever killed them is still around.

This would also give incentive to hide bodies after killing someone.

Thanks to all of you for replying. I opened up a new topic in sort of a response to this. I want to start a discussion of what we would like to see in Skyrim, changes and/or additions. You guys have all contributed kindly to my post and I would love to see your input in there if you guys have a chance. I expanded a lot more than just telepathic guards.

I was surprised to see them make it out of Morrowind, I thought for sure in Oblivion they'd have enough sense to fix it. However when I made a stealth character and stole something in an empty house only to have one rush right in and arrest me was lame. Also stolen goods you should be able to sell. If you steal some rare sword or painting and sell it in the same town you stole it from I can understand some suspicion and the chance of them knowing but Oblivion's was not realistic at all.

I just want to be able to kill a guard with no witnesses around and get away with it. I thought it was pretty stupid how whenever I wanted to kill a guard and get away with it, I had to don the Gray Fox's Cowl

Yea, seems like an easy fix. All they have to do is check to see if anyone detects the character when the crime is comitted and tag said NPC and if said NPC has not conacted a guard or another NPC and said NPC is slain before contacting a guard then no crime is reported then the PC should not be confronted by a telepathic guard.. whew

Yeah, I agree. I don't want the guards to have ESP. That's just not cool...

Agree with OP, the omnipotent and collective consciousness of Cyrodiils law enforcement made for some frustrating moments in Oblivion, particularly for stealthy players. However, I could live with it staying that way if players were able to re-enter stealth by breaking line of sight with any pursuing guards, sneak skill notwithstanding.

Guard 1: Damn thief! They just jumped into the water! Go after them!
Guard 2: I'm wearing full plate! *You* go after them.

That made me smile. Great point! It is like every fork, ring and bread roll had a bar code on it. Seeing as they are adding new animations I would love to see an animation for actually pick pocketing someone, like opening up a coin purse on an enemy before opening up the interface to pick what items to steal. I think by doing that it would not only add to the immersion of the game but also add to the tension of "Oh crap I am actually attempting to steal! DON'T GET CAUGHT!"

Really? There's nobody in the house to witness the crime unless you had a companion or it was from some other crime.

But yes please Bethesda NO PSYCHIC GUARDS PLEASE!!

It was in the Odill farm just outside Chorrol. I actually quite enjoyed it because it was funny. But i do hope that it will be fixed in Skyrim. I am actually quite sure of it that it will be.

Wouldn't it be an interesting concept for every NPC to have their own levels of awareness and intelligence? Like if a guard is on duty and standing still for long periods of time he might get bored and his mind might wander making it easier to steal from him. In accordance to this a spell that allows the caster to view a target's awareness and state of mind, success based upon skill level and level of target. It would be nice to be able to have some sort of way to decide what targets are worth going after. I don't mean specifics like it stating "100% chance to steal" but maybe more like observations like "target looks rather sleepy" or "Target looks attentive and energetic". Just some musings of mine.

Bethesda have already released information about this. They have stated that if you are wanted in one area/city it doesn't automatically spread to another. Because Skyrim has a civil war going on it would be mighty strange if guards in one city gave a rats ass about your crimes in another. They have compared it to Fallout New Vegas' faction system i believe.

well if this is true then what you say pertains to some of it at least. It still does not mean that every guard within each city does not have ESP.. I would rather my crimes carry over from city to city rather than instant knowledge of my actions before my crime is physically reported.

My bad I was thinking of cheyeinhal when you said abandoned house (the db sanctuary). I should read things better sometimes.

I also hope horses aren't undercover telepathic law enforcement this time around either.
