Please Devellopers! One Request!

Post » Mon Nov 15, 2010 8:42 am

One thing that I absolutely, positively hated about Oblivion, Fallout 3, AND Fallout New Vegas...

The sleep/waiting timer, I think it is a useful tool to use waiting and sleeping but I hate how long the timer takes. Lets say I need to wait 3 days for a quest, some people would go out and spend that time playing the game, a lot of them would use the wait tool.

I loved morrowind's wait tool because it went very fast, and actually made a point to be that fast. I use the wait tool to pass time, not because I wanna sit there for an entire minute to wait a day.
I know, this seems frivolous but I am just begging you, if you do not make it this way atleast add an OPTION.

For PC players, they have mods. I find that games like these are more enjoyable on a console and we don't have mods.

I would like an option to make the timer for waiting and sleeping FAST. It defeats the purpose (Although still useful) to make it take so long.
Once again, I know this seems frivolous but it is something I think many people can relate to, and if you make it an OPTIONAL setting, then EVERYONE is happy. Not just one side or the other.

I know its weird to contact devellopers and I am not entirely certain they will see this.
But if anyone of you do, please implement this option. Please.

Regards, Deagonx.

No, heres why. It really isnt that long i think you're overreacting. Also, if you didnt mean to wait that long then you have time to cancel it when you want without having to go through it all again, and you couldnt do that if it went crazy fast.

I dont know what PS stands for.

It stands for Post Script. Post as in after and script as in the body of your message. So compounding it would be P.P.S as in Post Post Script.

I think that says it... It's a little 'too' frivolous. Plus, I was never bothered by waiting the 10 seconds for 24 hours to go buy. It's certainly much better than waiting like 45 minutes for the 6 hrs to go by.

And PS stands for 'Post-Script', or after writing.

Isn't more because it's simulating world-happenings while you wait/sleep, as opposed to being a design decision?

You have to take into consideration why it is that it was such a short wait in Morrowind and so long in Oblivion and the Fallouts. In Morrowind, what's the difference between 1AM and 1PM? Nothing.

In the following games, people have schedules. It has to progress all of the surrounding NPCs in the area's scripts so that they're still in line with the time you waited to. I'm sure it has to account for a ton of other things that it didn't have to with Morrowind.

They didn't just say "hey, let's make waiting time longer." That would be silly.

The last two people have a point as well. SO much in their engine is based on the hour's. Script effects, packages, AI, and much more. This allows it to calculate on a per-hour basis, instead of suddenly jumping ahead 20 hours and bogging down your computer with the calculations afterword. Would you rather the game slowly wait over 10 seconds, then be fine, or go instantly, but then your game is rather glitchy for like 15 seconds? (It would be longer because then its calculating that, AND running the natural world as is) In addition, this time the game looks SO much nicer, and has dynamic lighting to calculate and recalculate as you wait. I'm positive it will remain at it's previous 'slow' pace. And sure, this isnt an issue on nicer comp's, but it could be on 360, ps3 and the average household computer.

I think, in the past 5 years the engines will have evolved enough for them to atleast speed it up a bit.

I understand that it does sound very silly, but some people are impatient.
I'm not actually impatient but.. well, its personal but waiting like that makes me sick to the stomach.

NO, here is why, it's fine the way it is and I think I've never waited longer than 4 hours so I didn't really pay attention to the bar being to slow moving. And games like this are better enjoyed on consoles?Don't make me laugh :)

Come on it only takes a few seconds... And it's needed for the computer to calculate every NPC situation.

This is true to a point. They have optimized the newer game engine. Lets say it's made the engine 10x more efficient at doing all this stuff. But, now the game's graphics, AI routines, and all that have made the entire game 50x more complicated to calculate as an additional byproduct of the newer engine. So overall its 5x harder to calculate, which is balanced out by computers improving over the last 5 years. But again, this doesnt apply if you have a 5 year old computer, or something like a ps3 or 360 which are getting older as well. Once again taking us back to the problem of it just needing too much CPU power to be practical.

I voted yes. Why would I want to wait for longer? It's like saying "load screens only took 20 seconds, so there's no need to further optimize the game".

True, but for both of these it isn't just loading long for fun. It is actually doing stuff. Would it be nice for it to go faster? Sure. But I understand why it is there. Hell I even have to watch it because I always wait 24 hours and just click cancel when I want to stop waiting lol.

One point I would like to make that I hope no one takes offense from.

I'm not sure all these points you are making, you really know what you are talking about. I understand that waiting has to run the scripts, but everyone has a set script and schedule. I don't think it necessarily needs to load all those things that they are doing. Just assume their new position based on said schedule.

I don't know what i'm talking about either. But I assume you don't either, hope you don't take offense but this is complicated stuff.

Either way, I said it should be optional. If it makes the game a bit slower, then that is our prerogative, since it is optional.

Seems to me the votes are even.

And those that said no said no because of technical issues it might cause. But isnt that for the devs to work out?

No, instead be happy there IS a wait feature even if the game progresses at lightning speeds.
If we get to have waiting, sleeping, and resting for several days, then I'd like to see only first and last day go by in hour increments, and the days in between could be speed up.
Scenario for this:
You catch some kind of disease. Cure disease only stops it from progressing, and only resting will make it recuperate. You're in a dungeon and don't even have your own camping equipment that would enhance your sleep, speeding up the process somewhat, so it's up to you: Do you...
* Rest in the dungeon for two weeks expending all your food and water? Free but food is a problem.
* Get to the closest inn and have it done by resting for two days? Can be the most expensive.
* Get back to town and rest in your own mansion bed of exquisite quality and have it done in 12 hours? Most inconvenient but cheap and fast.

I got hit by a RAD storm the other day in FONV (addon), which killed me the first two times. The last time I was up to "only" critical radiation poisoning (rather than fatal), barely able to survive. It became a challenge since I already was low on rad chems, and I was located in Camp Searchlight (already filled with radiation). Normally a RAD storm is only a mild inconvenience, but the circumstances made it a brutal challenge.

It was a lot of fun. And could easily be added to TES game as a rare but random challenge, drawing focus away from being completely fighting/stealing/casting oriented.
