Please don't tell me birthsigns are gone

Post » Sat Sep 18, 2010 7:51 pm

Personally I'm a huge fan of the Atronach. It may be a bit overpowered, but it is also a lot of fun. And how am I supposed to save the world if I'm not born under a certain star to uncertain parents. Uncertain parents doesn't make you a hereo.

I also hope they can make some of the others a bit more interesting. The shadow can be very helpful for some characters, but the some of the others are only usefull in the early levels. Maybe the birthsign power should get stronger as the PC levels up.

Although I admit they could be done without, I will miss the Ritual. Now if I want a Turn Undead spell, I'll have to level Conjuration

Can I get a source on the removal of birthsigns? I've been hearing it for months but no one ever gives a source and I don't remember hearing it or reading it anywhere official.

They are gone along with classes and attributes. Only thing I will miss is the class-name for roleplaying reasons.

I don't believe there is one. One of the earliest references to the skills UI (possibly the Game Informer article, even) mentioned that Bethesda was "preserving the player's ties to the birthsigns", which many people interpreted as saying that they were out and the constellations were supposed to be a throwback to them. Nothing has been said, that I know of at least, that outright says birthsigns have been removed. Todd never mentioned them when discussing character creation, though.

Yeah, they got rid of them for no reason, other than to appeal to newbs.

Todd said the only thing you do at character creation now is pick race, gender, and looks. He never mentioned birthsigns. I imagine they're out, because they're part of that whole "I picked when I was uninformed and now I'm mad." deals.

If you listen, watch, read a few info source that talk about the new leveling system and the new constellations screen for which you level up and pick your perks, the birthsigns are gone and replaced through leveling up and picking our perks (i assume most of the old birthsign powers will be remade in perk form) from what i understand

I was under the impression that the Constellations were the birthsigns, or at least re-imagined.

I'm not really too bothered about the removal of classes (apart from the little name you got, that was cool) and I'm reserving judgment on the highly flammable subject that is attributes, but I don't see why they had to remove birthsigns. They didn't limit you in anyway and added a little something extra to your character.

Not a big loss, we can get the very same effects from items and spells and whatnot. But birthsigns did have a unique touch to them that I will miss a bit. Still, birthsigns didn't quite apply to this new take Bethesda has... where who you are is dependent on what you do during the game; in other words, you are what you play, not what you choose in the beginning.

I want the Daggerfall advantages/disadvantages system back, personally.

The same way that you saved the world in Arena and Daggerfall

ie you didn't use birthsigns because they weren't there :P

Its best this way, it was too confusing and forced us into making uniformed decisions early on and then being trapped into that decision. Now I can just grow to be who I want to be instead of choosing early on when I am uniformed and then having to restart most of the time I can't be bothered to do! So it means I will actually play and enjoy the game more now, thank you Beth :)

Ps. Bring on detox.

No they put them in to add depth, or to try and add depth back, since character creation from Dagger to Morrow was so "dumbed down". Todd said they took them out so new players wouldnt ruin their character at the start of the game. Like a birth sign could ruin a character unless you were a newb and, or you just didnt read what the signs did. Like someone else said, I want the character creation from Daggerfall back, now that was deep.

It was fun to roleplay as a disadvantaged character though - say, an Orc mage. Attributes and the racial bonuses to them added another layer of difficulty and flavor for people who wanted to play the game in a different way. Choosing your race shouldn't just be purely aesthetic - it should play some factor in gameplay.

The character creation in Daggerfall is awesome. Best in the series by far.
