I basically wanted to know what the frame rate would need to be, in order to make it look like real life movement.

Would 60fps give the same visual quality of a human eye, if that makes sense?

It would be pretty difficult to estimate the eye's function in terms of FPS, since that's not how it operates at all. If I was pressed about it, I would say that the human eye is capable of seeing in excess of 90 fps, probably up to the 200 fps mark or beyond. The brain is very, very fast. More frames would always be smoother and better, but 60-90 seems to work fine with our present technology.

EDIT: This is a pretty good read about the subject: http://amo.net/NT/05-24-01FPS.html

I hope Skyrim doesn't experience screen tearing on console. New Vegas seemed to be ok, so I'm expecting the same from Skyrim. The recent demo for the latest Duke Nukem was horrible for it.

I know Obilivion had Zero Screen tearing on the Xbox Version and after all the Patches came out it ran like a sewing machine. I just hope they give users an option to toggle it on and off.

Low frame rates would be a big problem for me. It will get very annoying after 10 mins if the lag is poor. If the game is not running smooth it shouldn't get released until it is fixed.

Edit:
Out of curiosity, in reletive terms what does the human eye see in terms of frame rates if it were a computer?

The Human eye doesn't perceive the world in frames. We get a continuous flow of light information

If you look at something, and then look away, you have the ability to imagine that object as if you were still looking at.

i pretty much turn off vsync on every game i play and never really noticed any screen tearing. i wonder if it was an issue previously but has disappeared as of late with newer graphics cards.

Im pretty sure the vast majority of Xbox games are locked at 30 frames per second which would remove any possible tearing.

Also 10 frames per second is hardly an acceptable frame rate. The guy just put up with it because he had no other choice. 10 frames per second is a slide show.

Ok I will ask it differently. How mant frames per second would a computer need to put out to produce something equal to what the human eye can see?

I know how the eye works I was trying to get a comparison for a computer if that makes sense

Well.... I don't know the exact answer.

I do know that the human brain takes about 150 milliseconds to process an image, so if something takes less than 150 milliseconds to occur, I don't think you can see it. That doesn't really answer the question at all.

I think truth be told we just don't have a definate answer, things even occuring in less that 150 milliseconds will still be registered by the eye your brain just wouldn't have reacted quick enough to avoid it if it was a threat to you

Your question is a bit unclear. Are you asking how different framerates look to the human eye? This here is the classic page for such a question: http://www.boallen.com/fps-compare.html

you cannot see more than 15 frames per second, but having more than that makes things look smoother. for example : if you're shopping for a tv, you can notice the smoothness difference between a 400hz tv and a 800hz tv.

Really, all you need is at least 11 FPS to play a game smoothly enough.

11 FPS? It may run smoothly, but that's way to slow. If something doesn't run at, at least 30 FPS I don't bother playing it.

I thought the xbox already came with Vsnyc (or at least its locked at 30 FPS)

11 FPS looks like a slideshow.

EDIT: on the PC 11 looks like a slideshow.

Yeah, I love all the assassins creed games, played and beat them all except the first one. Same with Fallout. Never noticed any screen tearing. Maybe I just don't pay attention.

With pure FPS games having higher frames rates is always a good thing (particuarly during online combat), but with games like Fallout and TES I've never found it to make any difference. Hell, a lot of people acutally LOCK their fps at 30 with Oblivion and FO3 using the relevant stutter remover plugin. Futhermore, I've tried playing these games at the higher frame rates with the cap removed and the onyl real difference I've noticed is that the GPU heats up quicker.

Nowhere. It sounds like the kind of 'information' you get from people trying to sell you £60 Monster cables because they are 'better'. ( They must be good, they cost 5 times as much as the others :o )

I always tend to lock frame-rates at 60fps without using vsync in any game that has a cvar to allow you to do it, otherwise I just use vsync. The reason I have always heard for console games being limited to 30 is to avoid fps spikes, as they make the games feel really choppy, having it jumping up and down all the time. Thats also the reason why locking your fps in Oblivion/Fallout using the stutter remover works, the engine really doesn't handle fps spikes very well, so its better to play locked at a framerate just below the minimum spike, than having it shooting up and down every few seconds, causing the engine to crap itself.

I don't care about FPS. Really, you can't even notice the difference between 30 and 60 FPS unless you look really hard for it.
