Please help, i'm having a nightmare :(

Hi all i'm having a nightmare with setting up some mods, long story short i'm new to the pc version but have 1000+ hours under my belt on the 360 version so decided to build myself a pc to play the pc version, got the GOTY edition of the game and started a new game, got out of the vault and had a wander around to make sure everything was good, after spending a couple of hours wandering around exited the game and copied the data folder to a different folder as a back-up

anyway after doing all that i started to install some mods, i tried FWE but didn't like it so having heard good things about FOOK i decided to install that but then i started getting lock-ups

with many more to come but i have come across a problem or 2 yesterday with everything above installed apart from fook2 (i thought it was installed but didn't use the installer so just textures ect were installed) i played all day without issue but then realised fook wasn't installed i downloaded the installer and run it then copied over the patch files and FOOK2u stuff again but now have had 2 lock-ups the first was in megaton returning you moira after getting loads of rads for the book, it crashed when the screen turned black durig the de-radding part, this was using a save from yesterday so thought i would start again from the very start just in case, so started a new game and got through to the escape part and as soon as i started picking stuff up noticed the first aid box was missing on the wall so had a look around and found a silenced 10mm but as soon as i picked it up it crashed

i have run my load order through fo3edit and it found a few problems but i have no idea what i'm looking at so please can someone give me some advice as to what to do the problems are with some of the fook2 files but i don't want to lose fook2


just had another go with my old save before exiting vault 101 and things were going quite well i got the teleporter hat from the raider bridge (i think it was part of the levellers truck mod or something) and visited robco hq and surrounding areas and then decided to return home (from the list, it transports you to a shelter where the hat was) and it lock's up..... i'm guessing it's something to do with the errors in fook but not 100%, but from what i have seen of the game so far it's 10x better than the stock game the wasteland looks and feels so much better and i can't wait to try out some of the other mods i have in a rather large list i have compiled over the last few days but can't move on until this problem is sorted so please can someone point me in the right direction

since then i have done yet another restore of the data folder and a fresh install of FOOK2 + FOOK2u but now i'm getting missing textures (big red sign, i remember from the pit when it first come out on the 360) so now what? yet another restore and hope or is there something else i'm missing

i'm using fose, fomm and have used the large address app to get fallout to use more memory.

there is a long list of mods i would like to install but until i find a fix for fook i don't see the point in trying the others


Anyway thanks for reading and i hope someone can help me get back to the wastes with lots of shiny mods :fallout:

Do you have a Dual Core Pross(In your PC) Are you running FOSE? Did you install FOOK 2 then start a new game from birth? Are you running FOOK2 1.0 1.1Beta 1 or Beta 2. I don't see anything in your load order wrong. If that don't work remove FOOK and if that don't work Throw your PC out the window.That fixes most problems..

Well, you don't seem to have an extraordinary amount of mods. I don't have any experience with FOOK (so you'd have to check readme's for the correct load order with that), but it's possible you may not have uninstalled FWE entirely.

Since you've not got very far, it might be worth trashing that install and using that (very wisely made) back up. Unless anyone else has any suggestions?

Also, it might be worth highlighting which OS you are using, since vista and 7 have issues that may need resolving as well.

Hello,

Well, I am having my own problems with constant CTDs(crash to desktops) with my mods as well, so I will simply give you the advice that allows one to get as far as I've gotten. This is well worn advice and I'll go through it as methodically as possibly so you know wtf you're doing.

You have FOSE, FOMM, FO3Edit, good, now get BOSS, better oblivion sorting software from the fallout3nexus. It helps to get your load order in hand. Many times load orders for any certain set of mods will be specified in the readmes of those mods, either way, the BOSS guys do their homework so you don't have to(as much).

Quick explanations before nitty gritty.

-FOSE is your "replacement" for fallout3.exe, follow the steps to install it in your fallout3 directory and use FOMM to launch it with your specified mods

-FOMM is your launcher, and more importantly, your package manager for mods. It will let you review your mod orders, export lists of those mod orders, review save game lists and their relevant mod orders, and allow you to install mods as "packages" which can make for easy installation and uninstallation of mods. This package manager is something you should get familiar with, play with it and understand it, you can install mods that are "packed" as FOMODs with it or use the features in it to install a mod from an extracted directory or right out of the archive!

-FO3Edit is your mod cleaner, after you get your load order taken care of(with BOSS/readmes) Fo3edit will let you create a "merged patch" that tries its best to make all your mods play nice. You can make one by simply opening up fo3edit, making sure all the mods you want are checked, then right clicking on the left side window and selecting "create merged patch", name it, let the program do its work, then close it. Open up FOMM and put a check by your merged patch to finalize.
Another useful/necessary feature of fo3edit is the masterupdate function, which fixes a lot of errors also, don't ask me how it works. The way to use it is to do all the other steps outlined here, then create a shortcut of fo3edit and add the arguments(under the properties of the shortcut, the box labeled target) "FO3Edit.exe -masterupdate", when you run that shortcut it will works it magic and tell you of its success at the end of running. This is the last step in getting your game to be runnable, after this just load up FOMM and hit "launch FOSE".

-BOSS is your mod order doer thinger, follow the steps to install it and run the batch program, it should end with a load order report and a list of mods it doesn't recognize, those mods are where you "wing it".

So you download a bunch of mods
1. Run FOMM and install them with the package manager, making sure they install correctly in the /data folder. Consult the FOMM main window to make sure the correct mods installed and to review any optional mods that may need to be removed or kept based on each mod.

2. Close FOMM, run BOSS from your /data directory, hopefully get all your mods nice and ordered.

3. Run FO3Edit and create your merged patch.

4. Close FO3Edit and open FOMM, put a tick by your merged patch.

5. Close FOMM and run FO3Edit -masterupdate, let it work.

6. Close FO3Edit -masterupdate to finalize changes, play fallout3.

Anytime you make changes to your mods you have to do this, it becomes second nature.

I'm running 31 mods and none of what you said poopoopapa is necessary to me. But, I enjoy trial and error a lot more then open, close, open, click click.

I do something kinda similar, but with Gary Bash (and therefore using a Bashed Patch, as opposed to a Merged Patch, per se) in combination with FO3MasterUpdate. I've also used FO3Edit once, but anyway...

Just throwing it out there as an alternative, that's worked for at least one person (me) ! :D

I'm really unsure...Seemed like a good Ideal at the time...But so did sleeping on the bathroom floor with my head in the Toilet.

To the Op, I've always had trouble with Fook. It really is a buggy mod. If you like the guns in Fook, I suggest 19th and 20th century weapons. It's more Stable. All the other mods can be found on the Nexus via a quick search.

Sorry i haven't replyed before now but i have had a little bit of a breakthrough, the other day i was going a little mad with it all and copied the old sort of working data back-up over into the data folder and well it made things a little better, not perfect but a lot better i have also changed a few things like making fallout quad core compatable but disabling 2 of the cores and it has stopped a few of the minor lock-ups not all of them but i can play for an hour or 2 without issue now where before i was lucky to get 30 mins play time, i can't belive they broke quad core suport in one of the patch's and haven't fixed it...... i guess it will have to do for now

the system is 100% stable in other games apart from my beloved fallout :fallout: so has to be down to the game or mods

Anytime you change the mods, or alter the load order, you should do a MasterUpdate. And if you have multiple mods which affect leveled lists, you should create a Merged/Bashed patch. I've also found that disabling the built-in autosave feature and replacing it with CASM helped remove a bunch of crashes for me.

Really thought i had cracked it, after doing loads of reading up about installing mods and lernt how to do a master update i reinstalled the game and installed FOOK2 first and tried it out but there was still loads of problems so did a bit more reading and found various tips about limiting the cpu cores and activating more than 3Gb of ram but was still having problems, so a bit more reading and found out it may be HDR causing the problem and strange but true it helped but not perfect yhen with all the reading and getting confused with picking mods and getting them to work right........ anyway long story short turned off auto saves on everything and apart from a few strange things like trying to shot silver near megaton it causing the game to lock-up but that wasn't a problem she can live, the thing that is getting me worried is i'm 19 hours into the game now basicly i've just been doing a few quests and looking round some of the mods but in the last 2-3 hours it's been crashing more and more the first one was a bit of a kick in the teeth as i lost about 2 hours or game play due to me getting complacent and not doing a manual save, the last crash was at the improved fort independance during a big dust up between the outcasts, raiders and the enclave, great fight but when i was going round picking up all the dropped stuff it hung on me :brokencomputer: the thing thats got me worried is the last 3 crash's have been over the last 3 hours with 2nd & 3rd lock-ups within 20 mins of each other :sadvaultboy: :cry: :banghead: , also on a couple of times during start-up it has locked-up and had to ctrl,alt,del my way out of it but starting up again it works fine

anyway here's my load order just incase there is something that will stand out to you guys, as i said above the game with this load order has been flawless all day starting about 9 this morning (uk time)

When you're doing a bashed patch, do you use "Bashed Patch, 0" in the extras folder?

Also, when you rebuild the patch, what check boxes do you select, and what do you not check? With a merged patch, it's as simple as one button "create merged patch" but with a bashed patch, it's more complicated for me. I should note that the Bashed Patch, 0 has all the boxes on the left panel checked, and all the boxes in the right panel are unchecked. Is this right?

Umm..... no, what i have done is created 2 copy's of fo3edit one renamed to fo3MasterUpdate and the other called fo3MasterRestore like i read somewhere and upto now it's been fine, i have run fo3edit (i thought this was doing something like patching or something) when it come's up a pop-up with my load order come's up and i click ok and it does it's stuff, so looks like more reading.... my eye's hurt lol

where should the extras folder be? it's not in the game dir anywhere..... please say i don't have to start all over again, and if i do is there any chance of someone doing me a massive favor and do me a short step by step guide or something like

1) install game
2) install fomm (or whatever go's next)
3).........

ect ect ect

with locating all the mods and trying to figure out how to set them up and all the rest i feel as if my heads going to explode :nuke:

one last thing before i hit the sack, there are a few more mods i would like to add (well i say a few but i'm still only about half way at best through looking (atm i'm on page 36 of misc on fo3nexus)) do i have to start a totaly new game from birth or can i start from the vault exit, i ask this because there is so many different things i've read on this it's confusing some say to wait for 3 days in game for things to reset but others go on about starting from the vault exit and other about starting from birth, this is about my 12th play through and as much as i love this game the start is getting so old now and i know i can get mods that skip the start ect but i want to limit the mods i use to life after the vault

If you're using FOOK2 Beta 2, the problem is that you installed it incorrectly. The World and Neighbourhood Kit is now bundled with the main addon, as it is with EVE. The MyFOOK2 options are now configured in-game. Alternatively, if you're using FOOK2 Beta 1, then that's probably the cause, since it had rampant CTDs for some people, although it was fixed in Beta 2. Try reading http://www.fookunity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4212 on the FOOK2 forums for installation.

Good luck. I assure you, FOOK2 is worth it once it's working.

A little update, i've unticked the marked mods and continued the game it said about missing parts but continued anyway, i viseted fort independance and like before the enclave, raiders and outcasts were having a party so like before i crashed it killing all the enclave troops and by mistake a few of the outcasts :facepalm: anyway no crash so i thought it was working, so i continued to tenpenny tower, got the job of sorting the ghouls out and thats where things started to get a little unstable... i got 2 followers from tenpenny tower gave them some new toys (power armour kindly donated by the enclave) and set of for the tunnels....... long story short got to where roy was and tried shooting the female one (can't remember her name) and it locked up..... so reloaded my last save and when't back talked to you and told him i was there to kill him and all that and managed to kill both of them with no issue, got back to tenpenny tower got reward and tried to increase my ear collection (normally i go for the lawbringer option but can't find Sonora Cruz so had to be bad lol) and it crashed again anyway tried a few more times and got myself a few ears so started back to megaton to drop a few things off but crashed again just outside grayditch near the trader bridge, hopefully all that should give you an idea as to what's going on when i next play i will start a new game with the above mods turned off to see it there's any difference i kinda hope it's the same and my other game is fixable i'm 20 hours in and don't want to have to go through all this again if i don't have to, i was hoping to really get out there and explore as fook and the mods make it all seam like a new game and i don't know if i've said before but i FOOKING LOVE THIS game :fallout:

Delete all stricken plugins as they're no longer needed with FOOK2 v1.1+. W4NK and the rest are merged into the main file and the MZ stuff is merged into DIK. Also, loading FOOK's .esp's more toward the bottom will most likely help prevent any showstopping conflicts.

Cheers JustinOther, love your mod dude it makes the game feel all new again, anyway done the above and good news it starts up without lock-up now i would have thought a mod such as FOOK would be sorted better in fomm..... oh well i know now lol anyway starting a new game as tried (not expecting it to work) to load my old game and tried to kill some random NPC and it locked

anyway hopefully it should all be good now i'm going to test it all out but one last question Justin you say the MZ stuff is now build in does that include the access after compleation? oh and what other cool stuff are you guys adding to the next version? anyway FOOKING love your mod dude i hope you guys work your magic on new vagas when it come's out :fallout:

thanks to the others that have replied hopefully the only other post i will be making in this thread will be a few days/weeks down the line after another 60+ hours roaming the wastes :gun:

Well things have gone from bad to better and now worse than ever.... i started a new game from birth with the extra FOOK bits disabled and seemed to be running great, i got out of the vault had a bit of a run around for a couple of hours and everything was good so dicided to give a couple of other mods i wanted to use a go loaded them and started yet another new game and as before all good, i even found Sonora using the regulators mod in the list and set off collecting fingers from all them nasty wastelanders, anyway cleared a few raider camps and had myself about 60 fingers but found myself wanting more lol so headed to fort independence where i knew there would be raider, talon company and enclave troops kicking off so got there and decided to take on the enclave as they would put up the most resistance so i killed about half of them and then i think i got shot by a plasma weapon as the game crashed and my gun was green, i know i had plenty of health well over half so shouldn't have died...... anyway thought strange but might have been just a random thing so restarted the game and loaded my CASM save and headed back to FI and saved just outside headed back killed about half again and the game crashed again still had plenty of health can't remember if the gun was green that time because it quickly when't black and the stopped working box come up the next time i started it up i loaded the new save just outside FI but the same thing happened so there must be a problem with the mods for FI so decided to remove the talon and raider parts and just left the enclave, reloaded the save outside FI but it crashed so loaded the one before near megaton waited 3 days and headed back and crash so reloaded save near megaton, waited 7 days just to be sure and headed back, got there kicked a$$ and started looting but half way through looting crash :banghead: :brokencomputer:

so thought about jumping off something tall but decided to have another look around for help and found the FOOK forums was working and found a post about using fo3edit to create a merged patch so thought i would give it a go, created one ticked the box in fomm and loaded........ crash on start-up on the first slide so ctrl, alt del back to windows reloaded firefox and all my pages from before clicked the FOOK forum tab and it's gone down again so closed firefox and remembered reading something about after making a merged patch running master update so did that and tried again......... crash so loaded firefox up again clinked the fallout nexus tab and looked at getting the unofficial patch downloaded that installed it and run the game it loaded so tried my save but no good so tried to start a new game, CRASH! and thats where i am now....... i'm hopeing someone can help me as it's ages till New Vagas come's out and i need my wasteland fix but the unmodded game is just not enough anymore
