Please Help Me Install Daggerfall

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:54 pm

Ok, so I've mounted the cd to the D: on dosbox, but how do I get it to install? If I type cd install or just install, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Okay, say your physical drive thats going to be installed in is C:\ and you're going to install in C:\games\ and that your CDROM drive is D:\

Type:
mount c c:\games -freesize 1000
C:
mount d d:\ -t cdrom
D:
install

That should do it, I could be wrong, if so I know a multitude of people here will correct everything from spelling, grammar, format, to line spacing. ;)

Actually, a common misconception is that 1000 is a real size when in reality it is not. You should probably use 1024, which is 1GB. 1000 equates to 976.5625MB, something that you wouldn't see on a real hard-drive. It's a pet-peeve due to having some games whig-out when seeing an odd number like that. Also, you should use the "ioctl" parameter for your CDROM if you're running XP, 2000, or Vista. Other than that, Warlock gave you good instructions.

Oh and one thing about running the game. Do ***NOT*** use the auto core and auto cycles, it will lock at a low value and the game won't run. Set your core to dynamic and set the cycles to max. This will allow the game to perform at maximum performance on most modern systems. Oh and note that DOSBox incorrectly sets up the SB16 on IRQ7 instead of IRQ5 like a real SB16.

Ok, I've been doing what you said warlock, but the only problem is that I get "illegal command" for whenever I hit D: install. I also get a limited support warning when I mount the d drive too :(

Thanks for all your help so far!

Noone claimed otherwise so I'm not sure why you're ranting about it. 1000 is an easy number to type, and more than enough of what the game needs.

Also, you should use the "ioctl" parameter for your CDROM if you're running XP, 2000, or Vista.

Not really needed, and won't affect the install procedure in any noticeable way.

Not true at all. Daggerfall runs in protected mode, so auto will switch to both to dynamic core and max cycles automatically and work just fine.

I recommend using cycles=auto limit 30000 for the game, though, cause a too fast CPU give the game gameplay glitches.
Oh and note that DOSBox incorrectly sets up the SB16 on IRQ7 instead of IRQ5 like a real SB16.

Totally irrelevant since Daggerfall can play from IRQ7 just fine.

Seems like you didn't mount D correctly then. What exactly did you type as you mounted D? And what drive is your real CD drive?

Sorry, I'm new to this -_- I typed exactly what the wiki, or what warlock told me. My cd drive is in drive E: I'm just not very familiar with dosbox or computers in general :P

Edit: Could it be that I have a dvdrom drive in my computer?

Okay :)

Then type mount d e:\ -t cdrom instead.

The DVD-ROM shouldn't be an issue.

It's freesize, not freespace ;)

The freesize command gives the mounted drive more space, so you have enough room.

Ok, now I'm even more confused because when I go to a custom path on the installation, it says that there are no drives available. Even with freesize (which I typed into dosbox before -_-)

Now it worked? I'm too confused lol

Ok, I'm so sorry but when I go to configure my soundcard, the mouse just disappears and I can't select one (even using UDI I can't select sound)

Err last question I hope... which card do I choose?

For digital, select Sound Blaster 16/AWE32, port 220, IRQ 7 and DMA 1. For MIDI, select Sound Blaster 16, port 388 or MPU-401, port 330. MPU-401 is the better choice of the two, and I recommend using it, but may under some special circumstances not work.

So ah... is there some sort of "I know how to run Daggerfall better than you" tournament going on?

No, there isn't? Hmm.
Someone should inform Sephiroth of that ;)

Actually try using the auto core and auto cycles and it will lock at 3000 cycles, which was discussed a few months ago here. It doesn't work with Daggerfall and causes the game to freeze or run insanely slow. The freesize comment was because it equated to a fraction, not a whole number. I have had this cause problems in some games due to older games being coded to use a "long" or "int" value (sometimes "double") that does not allow decimal places. The IOCTL parameter comment was to get the most out of DOSBox on an XP/Vista/2K system and possibly solve some problems before they start. The SB16 comment was because it is an incorrect setting and more of a bug than anything as anybody who knows DOS will tell you that IRQ7 is your printer port (LPT port).

I'd suggest you brush up before attacking somebody. I didn't waste my time posting for no reason, as you seem to think. There would be no point in doing so. I admit, the IRQ5/7 thing may have been the least important thing, but some games, rather quite a few of the older games, have problems since they're coded to look for an SB16 on I5 and an SBPro or older card on I7. There are also conflicts with programs that look for printer ports on I7 and find an SB16 there instead. I won't even go into the cycles and core thing, because I just posted pictures a few months ago of how auto core and auto cycles lock the cycles at 3000 and causes problems. I forget who it was (Taemos maybe) but somebody said that it was a known problem with DOSBox and Daggerfall.

I didn't mean to start an "I know Daggerfall better" war :P

I got it to work, and I must say... this game is amazing! It's so large and frightening, much different than Morrowind.

Thanks everyone!

Seems like you got Arena and Daggerfall confused. Arena isn't a protected mode game like Daggerfall.

The freesize comment was because it equated to a fraction, not a whole number. I have had this cause problems in some games due to older games being coded to use a "long" or "int" value (sometimes "double") that does not allow decimal places.

Doesn't apply to Daggerfall.

Doesn't apply to Daggerfall.

Seems like it to me. You added irrelevant stuff to get Daggerfall to run and made it much more complex than it needed to be.

If someone asks what 5+6 is, it's better to answer 11 instead of 7-4+16/2.

I got it to work, and I must say... this game is amazing! It's so large and frightening, much different than Morrowind.

Thanks everyone!

That's great! Enjoy the game!

I think the only thing Great Seph did wrong was throwing too many commands at a guy who doesn't even know what his DVD drive is labeled. Other than that, it's obvious that GS's methods work, or else I doubt he would post them. Now, how well it works for everyone else is debatable since hardware and software configs vary greatly from rig to rig.

For example, setting the cycles to max gave me a great framerate that just had a few hiccups, but that's all so far. It might not work that way from everyone.

And I noticed setting the CPU to dynamic gave me better results than the other settings.

^Hey, I'm not that retarded :P I knew my dvd drive was E:, but I was just thinking that the "-t cdrom" should be replaced with "-t dvdrom" but that didn't work lol. I appreciate your help seph, but I didn't know what half the stuff you were talking about was and I got my game running fine with Freddo's sticky (awesome guide by the way :))

LOL Sorry bout that. I misunderstood your first post.

It'll be good to mess with your cfg files just to see what works best for you, if only to learn a bit more about the process.

Hey, this forum helped me alot! I've had this game for over 2 months, but I could never figure out how to install it. I read what you guys have to say and... it worked! The only problem is, it told me to enter these to things:

CD c:\dagger
Dagger

I entered them but it said I have the wrong disc. Even though I never touched it. Any help will be greatly appreciated, I've waited for so long to play Daggerfall and now I'm so close!

Oh, and I accidentally closed the window, thinking I had to restart the computer. How do I get back to it?
