Please help me understanding what I'm doing wrong :(

Hi,
I've tried a few graphical additions to my UFCOM install and already made some compilations but it seemed that I do something wrong everytime.
I'm sorry for beeing a complete Nub :sadvaultboy: but my configuration has always some issues :(

Well i just backuped my clean UFCOM install (complete Oblivion folder, complete Oblivion-Mods folder and complete Oblivion folder from "MyDocuments" have a backup copy). Now I'm trying to install some graphical additions and mods which make it more beautiful and I could need some adivce how to install it correct.

Here is the way I installed it last time:

1.) All Natural 1.31
2.) Qarl PT 3
3.) Qarl PT3 Patch 1.3
4.) Bromets SI Textures
5.) Improved Sky Textures
6,) Let the people drink -only fountain
7.) Unique Landscapes Compilation (Ancient Redwoods, Ancient Yews, Aspen Wood, Blackwood Forest, Bravil Barrowfields, Brena River Ravine, Chorrol Hinterlands, Cloudtop Mountain, Dark Forest, Fallenleaf Everglade, Imperial Isle, Lush Woodland, Panther River, Skingrad Outskirts, Snowdale, Stendarr Valley, Silverfish River)
8.) OOO Snowdale Patch
9.) RAEVWD
10.) RAEVWD SI Edition
11.) OBGE Core V3 (OBSE v20 already in Backup and DirectX Update installed)
12.) OBGE Standalone Effects V3
13.) Liquid Water

But the problem with this install is that GodRays.fx was activated but my sun looked like this:

Second is that I installed also the Unique Landscapes which need a special terrain LOD file in my install before the one above listed. But this was wrong every time. I did installed it correct but the LODs didn't show up so the Unique Landscapes just popping up if the player gets close to them which doesn't look very nice (like Lost Coast).
But even WITHOUT those Unique Landscapes I see floating trees every time I run Tes4LODGen. So it seems that this trees and objects are generated by Tes4LODGen and there are some different type of ground LODs where one match with the objects (the close one) and one don't (the one from far away). Maybe this is the reason why I also can't see the LODs from the special Unique Landscapes package but I'm not geek enough to know how I can resolve this or what is going wrong. :(

Due to performace cost I didn't install RAEVWD & RAEVWD SI Edition. But since I got a fresh backup of my UFCOM running I decide to use some parts of it as long as it isn't too much, so I added it to my install list.

My stats:
Windows 7 64 bit
Radeon HD 6870 1 GB (Crossfire X disabled)
AMD Phenom X6 @ 3,20 GHz
16 GB DDR3 RAM

I hope someone can help me with a advice. I'm afraid that my install has some errors since the LOD object also get incorrect if i run Tes4LODGen on my Vanilla Data folder. I'm using the Oblivion "Complete Edition" from Steam which has all official DLCs already installed. (included DLCHorseArmor.esp, DLCMehrunesRazor.esp, Knights.esp, DLCShiveringIsles.esp, DLCVileLair.esp, DLCFrostcrag.esp, DLCBattlehornCastle.esp, DLCSpellTomes.esp, DLCThievesDen.esp, DLCOrrery.esp)
I would be very thankful about every help to get my data folder into perfect condition.

I think Godrays might actually be working, from what I can see in that screenie.

Try sunset or sunrise, or some time close to either.


edit: What I mean is, try testing it at one of those times, to see if it really is working. I am not sure, you see.

So that "god rays" or sunbeams only work at a special time? Damn I didn't noticed that sorry.
But the sun is looking a bit boring in my screen since i directly look (well not directly but that small dot above the tree is the sun :rolleyes:) with my char into it which normaly should burn eyes... well not so extreme but it should shine bright so it blinds a bit.
Is there a way to improve the shining until the time for Godrays has come?

Do you have Wrye Bash installed, and are you using it? You absolutely need to, for some mods - such as All Natural, for example.

If not, you should install it.

If so, or when you have done so, you should probably post your load order via Wrye Bash ( see here: http://tescosi.com/wiki/Oblivion:How_to_Post_Your_Load_Order for instructions, if you need them).

Might not fix everything all at once, or anything perhaps, but it would be a good start. Please ignore everything except the posting your load order part, if you already have it installed and set up correctly.

I installed the unofficial patches via Bain and the Installer lists the UOP as red. Before I've backuped the UFCOM install it was listed as yellow since it is overwritten by the patch supplementals so I think it is just a little displaying failure because wyre bash couldn't know that I deleted the complete obivion folder, oblivion mods folder and oblivion folder in "MyDocuments" and replaced it with the older backup files.
So this is my load order for now of my UFCOM backup and it is running fine.

I think you might need to install (reinstall?) the Supplementals, as the version being shown for the UOP is 3.2.0, and I believe it should be 3.3.7 at this stage. You also do not need to use the Vampire Face esp, nor the Citadel Door one. The former, you can use a Bashed Patch option to replicate (thus saving the need for one plugin) and the latter should only be used if you have need of it during play.

Regarding floating trees, I seem to remember reading that this is a hard thing to altogether avoid. Oblivion's engine is, after all, far from perfect in many ways.

Firstly, with any complicated mod setup where you may need to uninstall/reinstall things multiple times, BAIN would make your life much easier. It's a pain to setup everything in BAIN-compatible packages initially, but once it's done it only takes you a few clicks to move/remove/reinstall things.

Regarding your sun, beaming sunglare doesn't look like it's working correctly, so you'd be better off getting help on the OBGE thread for that. Basically what's happening here is that OBGE includes a sun "fix" for Godrays users which makes the sun very plain. This is because once you get Godrays working it adds most of the sun-related visual effects via shaders, and so if you have both the Godrays shaders working and the original sun effects it can look very strange. If you later have trouble getting Godrays working, Beaming Sunglare is an alternative which works very differently but still results in a pretty nice looking sun.

Regarding your floating trees, I believe the most common reason for that is due to incorrect distant land mesh files, the part that tells the game how high the land should be. In your Unique Landscapes compilation, there should be a bunch of folders named i.e. [00], [01], named to describe which combinations of distant land are inside. Install one each of [00], [01], etc, making sure to pick the right ones for the mods you have installed. If you install, for example, ALL versions of [00] then the last one will override the earlier, which could produce results like what you're seeing.

Thanks for the advice I will write that into a readme in my backup folder so i do it every time i backup my data.

That's exaclty what the Readme said and what I've done. The screenshots above are taken from the compilatoin i'm using now :( I don't know if my normal install also includes already this trees but i'm afraid i get them trough the Tes4LODGen.
The bad thing is that i already used Tes4LODGen once over my backup so i only have this settings :cryvaultboy:

The only good thing about using Tes4LODGen is that i see Frostcrag Spire after generating LODs but I really think that those floating trees come from that generating system too :(

Okay, no, those problems are not normal. One or two floating trees, in the far distance? Maybe. Nothing like that, though.

I wish I knew what was going on there, but I find it difficult without access to the computer in question (not a request!) - I also make a lot of assumptions, most often along the lines of people doing things the way I do. Which is silly, because I am idiosyncratic and a bit disorganised when it comes to Oblivion mods...

Oh... Strange that sounds very familiar :D

Should I delete my current backup install and using the "vanilla" data? Maybe when I can say 100% that this comes from the generating of the LODs we can know how and why it happens?
I got a vanilla backup too ^^ Since everything could happen in and around the installation of Oblivion I'm always prepared XD

I am tempted to suggest a clean (i.e., total) uninstall, followed by a clean install, and maybe TES4LODGen straight away. At least then we can discount that, most probably. Test to see how it looks and feels. Then, try installing a mod at a time (or two or three, if necessary in some cases), then testing the game for a bit. Rinse and repeat, running BOSS (and following its advice) then rebuilding your Bashed Patch each time as well, and running TES4LODGen too (why not?)

It is the best way to install mods anyway, and besides, sooner or later you will discover the mod that sets it off, for whatever reason.

Sounds like long work but good advice.
I uninstalled the game via steam (also deleted oblivion folder in "MyDocuments" and Oblivion Mods folder) and copy the vanilla data folder. I'll download the rest of the game data which only take some minutes...
After finish i also give Steam the order to anolyze the game data for missing or bad files too to be sure the setting is clean.

I'll come again with my results ;)

I'm done with the reinstall and everything went fine. I've started vanilla and it seems all correct. Only thing is that Frostcrag Spire is invisible but that should be fixed after i run Tes4LODGen.

To bumping my progress...
Well there is my problem:

Now that's bad but Tes4LODGen really make this trees :( I used it for Frostcarg Spire LOD but also this didn't work yet, but normally i used Tes4LOD after using the unofficial patches so maybe thats why Forstcarg cannot be seen. But those trees also show up with the patches installed...

By the way I also used V2_2_2 and V1_2_44 of Tes4LODGen and there was no change. Since it is the latest version and running since 30 October 2010 I think V3_0_15 should be best version even with the "experimental" tag.
But why does this bug with the trees happen?

Do I have wrong meshes from a clear install?
Maybe I should mention that I first bought the german "Game of the Year Edition" on Steam (uncut! I load from austria) and after that I also bought the "Game of the Year Deluxe Edition" (expect the additional DLCs should the game version be the same) which is only in english available and has those additional DLCs. The strange thing is, that I only have "The game of the Year Edition" installed (it is called so in my Steam Client).
If i go to the shop site, I'm landing at the GOTY shop site. I have to search in the shop for the "Deluxe Edition".
The problem is, that I thought I load the "Deluxe Edition" when I turn the language from "German" to "English" and since I downloaded all additional DLCs (in Germany only Shivering Isles and Knights was translated).
Well so I bought oblivion 3 times... once for my Xbox360 (ony Vanilla), another copy did I virtually bought from Steam and at last I bought the "Deluxe Edition" from Steam. It was strange since at the shop site was written that I already own the "Deluxe Edition" but normally you cannot buy what you already own :rolleyes:

I'd say it's worth giving a shot to reinstalling the unofficial patch + SI + DLC + supplementals, then re-running TES4LODGen again. It's possible that the vanilla game has incorrectly positioned trees, or else incorrect land meshes, that are fixed by the UOP.

Edit: You do need the UOP for TES4LODGen to give you a distant Frostcrag.

Ah ok, that's why the installer of UOMP came with the Tes4LODGen.
But what do you think of this:

Should I ask Steam Support if I load the correct content? Maybe I overestimate the situation but since I download the content it is possibly a reason why those LOD terrain is wrong (when the Steam content is wrong i also cannot order Steam to anolyze it's correcntess).
Well I'm gonna contact them to delete one worst case scenario ;)

I'm not certain what you mean. Are you trying to install both the "Game of the Year Edition" and also the "Game of the Year Edition Deluxe" from Steam? If you have the "Game of the Year Edition Deluxe" from Steam, it includes everything, so uninstall any other versions first.

OMG no! I only try to install the Deluxe Edition but Steam is counting the "Deluxe Edition" only as Game of the Year Edition so I don't know if the content is correct even if I load the additional DLCs there could be maybe some failure.
Therefore I contact the Steam Support to eliminate one worst case scenario ;)

EDIT: Ok, my question is sent. I'll hope I get an answer soon. I'll continue with my adventure of the nub installation tomorrow :snoring:

Well, in case this is of any help, my current Oblivion setup is installed from & based upon the Steam "Game of the Year Edition Deluxe" package. I have not had the floating tree issues which you have.
