Please help with quest not starting

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:07 am

Hi,

After I complete the "Good Intentions" quest at the College of Winterhold, the arch-mage tells me to go see Mirabell, but my journal doesn't update with the "Revealing The Unseen" quest. So when I go to Mirabell, I cannot inquire about the Staff of Magnus. Is there anyway around this annoying bug?

Thank you in advance!

Not sure if this will fix it. But you can give it a try.
"Unofficial Skyrim Patch".
It is supposed to fix bugs in a large number of quests.

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=19

I've been using it since ages. And I've never ran into a problem with any quest.
After installing the addon, you might need to load an older savefile. I would imagine that this patch can prevent upcoming problems, but can not fix problems that have already happened in the past.
Good luck.

Hi,

Thank you for your answer, however, I already had that mod installed when I was on this quest path. I went back and tried a few things differently, however, and it still didn't work. After the archmage gives me the circlet and tells me to see Mirabell...nothing. The "Good Intentions" quest shows "Completed," and then nothing happens after that.

Please, is there a way to jump start the "Revealing The Unseen" quest by utilizing the console or something? Or even complete the quest, so that I can move on?

Thank you in advance!

Maybe you can jumpstart by going to the first stage of the quest ?
I haven't done that myself yet, so I don't know how well it works.

More info about the stages of the quest can be found here:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Revealing_the_Unseen#Quest_Stages

So this console-command might do the trick ?
First do: "getstage MG06" to see if the quest has started or not.
Then you can do: "setstage MG06 10" to start the quest.
If that didn't help, maybe try "setstage MG60 20" ?

Good luck.
Make sure you save before you try this, so that you can always go back.

Yeah, Gryz, I think you meant "set stage" not "get stage", but, regardless, I tried every single freakin' stage there is, and after I hit enter an pulled out of the console NOTHING happened at all. No quest updates, no new dialogue with anyone...NOTHING. What's that all about? This is ridiculous. Is there anything else I can do? Or is that about it? Am I screwed, or what?

EDIT: Okay, I tried everything, and "Revealing The Unseen" would not start. So, I entered setstage MG07 0 and it started the next quest, I am supposed to go to the Labyrinthine to retrieve the Staff of Magnus. However, NOW the problem is that I cannot enter the Labyrinthine, because a windows pops up that says I to not have the item to open the Ceremonial Door. Can someone please help me now?

I also tried opening the console and typing in "unlock." It didn't work.

Thank you

When you use console commands to adjust quests, you have to be pretty careful. I read everywhere that you can not unset progress. And that you might run into problems. The setstage command just changes the state of a quest. It doesn't do anything regarding side-effect. Like getting quest-items, etc. I try to not use setstage, unless I'm sure what I'm doing. I think I might have used it once to finish a small quest that was stuck. (In the Bard's college). Doing with with the mage's questline is a bit trickier.

Did you do this quest ? MG05
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Containment

It seems to happen before the two quests you mention.
This quest gives you Savos Aren's Amulet and the Torc of Labyrinthian. And the Staff of Magnus.
According to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_Staff_of_Magnus the Torc is required to enter
the Labyrinthian. If you don't have the Torque, you can give yourself one with this console command:

player.additem 000a34f8 1

Id's for all quest items can be found here.

Good luck.

Yeah, what happened was setstage would not start the quest either, nor would the Containment quest start. So I started the Staff of Magnus quest with the setstage (which did work). Next, I added the Torc of Labyrinthian, and I was able to get inside. So hopefully, I am done with this nasty bug! Do you think this issue will be tended to in future patches? Apparently, someone is aware of it, or else it wouldn't be on the Wiki page.

Thank you for all your help, Gryz!

You're welcome.
I think the fan-made big Unofficial Skyrim Patch is supposed to fix most of these issues. As soon as I was aware of its existence, I installed it. Personally I have run into only 1 issue, where I coulnd't turn in a quest item (a musical instrument) at the Bard's college. I had found the item before I got the quest. I had to use a console command to drop the item. For the rest, the game + patch seems to work flawlessly.

If the people working on the Unofficial Skyrim Patch read this, or find out about the bug, I am sure they will try to fix it.

Will Bethesda fix it ? Very unlikely. In the previous two games they seem to have left a lot of bugs and problems unfixed. The community would create a big patch addon anyway. I find that sloppy and lazy of Bethesda. But on the other hand, I can forgive them, because a) the community is fixing it for us, and b ) Bethesda has created a great game for us anyway ! I can't be too picky, I'm already happy Skyrim exists.
