Please include southpaw / legacy controls

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:18 am

Can anyone confirm if southpaw, legacy and legacy-southpaw controls will be in the game? If not, would it be posible to add them in a patch at a later date? This would ensure that more people would be able to comfortably play the game.

Dunno what legacy is but if it's just the controls then you can most likely change that yourself but if you mean if the weapon is on the left/right side of the screen then probably not

I know what you mean... I recently tried playing FO3 (PC) with a 360 controller to see if I could get used to it. No in-game option to swap the sticks to a southpaw control scheme, and no way to do it in Windows (I understand that on the xbox, you can do it through the dashboard).

I spent a whole day and evening messing around with third-party emulation software, and finally got it semi-playable (the trigger inputs were conflicting, and the rumble-pad wouldn't work through the emulator, but I could try it out). I actually liked the stick and button arrangement for moving and interacting, but I just couldn't stand using an anologue stick to look around--so much harder than using a mouse. :stare:

Anyway, I was really disappointed in the lack of decent support for controllers, both in FO3 (the only supported controller is the xbox one) and in Windows in general. You'd think Microsoft would at least have a decent configuration utility for their own hardware!

As a lefty myself, I've gotten used to using my computer right-handed. I have a lefty friend who's the same way, but my Dad uses it in the traditional flipped-around lefty style (mouse on the left) which I can't get used to.
For keyboard controls I don't know any reason why you can't change the controls around manually and use the arrow keys or IJKL instead of WASD, and of course swap other keybindings around too, to compensate for using the computer in the lefty manner. I do hope, though, that there's some way for you to flip around the XBox360 controller on the PC.

For anyone who is confused...

Default:
Left stick = move
Right stick = aim

Southpaw:
Left stick = aim
Right stick = move

Legacy:
Left stick = turn / walk forwards & backwards
Right stick = strafe / look up & down

Southpaw-Legacy:
Left stick = strafe / look up & down
Right stick = turn / walk forwards & backwards

These are all 4 standard layouts that have been around since Goldeneye on the N64.

Yeah, there's no trouble playing left-handed on the keyboard--I use the mouse in my left, and I remap my buttons to the number pad on the right side of the keyboard. Everything can be remapped except the hotkeys.

Using a controller you can remap most of the buttons, but not the anologue sticks. That svcks.

My comfort zone is pretty much locked into the Left Stick Move, Right Stick Aim. The Legacy settup reminds me too much of the old Resident Evils tank controls.

Same here. There is literally no way that I could ever get used to that control scheme. I've played that ever since I started gaming. It's just something you get used to. The 360 controller is set up to be used the default way, so that would make it ever harder.

True. Unless one of your favorite games utilizes the Legacy settup, it's one of those things that's hell to get used to, and you might find some means of compliance a few hours in. But then you lose your temperance with it as soon as you switch games that have different control schemes.
For me, I always get thrown for a loop when games come default with the "right stick up aims the camera down, right stick down aims the camera up".

Being utterly unable, after years of keyboard+mouse, to play FPS-ish games on a console controller, I'm always surprised by people saying they go to lengths to attach a controller to their PC. :)

But that's just a personal opinion. :D

It does seem like it should be simple to include other controller variations in the game options. (You'd think something like that would become an expected industry standard. Hmmm.....)

Keyboard controls, after a while, actually get my wrists to hurting a little.

I tried to hook my 360 controller to my PC so that I could use it with FO3, but it just didn't feel right.

By the way, am I the only weirdo that uses his index finger to hit the A, B, X, and Y buttons so that I can keep my thumbs on both sticks at all times?

I can't say I do the same. I've never felt the need to keep both thumbs on the sticks.

It's an odd habit of mine. Can't say whether it helps or not, I just do it without thinking.

Anyway, we can all hope that New Vegas has these options (The more the merrier, as they say). If not you guys will just have to use the controller the way that god intended.

Yes. :P

As for the topic at had, I don't see why they shouldn't just allow you to pick whatever control scheme you want.

I'm a long-time mouse-and-keyboard guy myself, but a few weeks ago I got it into my head that I wanted to try a controller. I usually play with a wireless keyboard and mouse on a board on my lap (I play in the livingroom hooked up to my HDTV). Sometimes, all that can be a little heavy on your lap after a while. I thought, it would be nice to have a more compact, hand-held control setup. I figured it must be playable with a controller, since so many people are using consoles. I already knew that you couldn't swap the sticks through the game settings, but I figured that it must be possible to configure the controller in Windows. Boy was I wrong. After all the messing around to get it semi-working, I didn't like using the controller, and I wish I never got the idea in my head in the first place.

I think the controller support for PC is lacking because there really isn't much demand for it.

Has there been any word on this? If there isn't a southpaw option, then I wont be able to play the game and I will have to cancel my pre-order. I would really appreciate it if one of the developers would reply.

At first I didnt know what you meant, then I saw the explanation. I can't do that. I have to play with the classic left to move right to strafe/view, or I will die ingame....alot xD

Haha! Personally i only crack out "THE CLAW" if playing a fairly intense round in a beat em up, its serious business. Im not sure i could do it with a thumb on the stick.

You may have to go with an Aftermarket Controller that is 360 like that comes with software that allows you to map conrols. Most aftermarket controllers offer something like this.

You can map every single control individually from the option menu.
