Please keep the supermutants stupid

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 5:54 am

I really hope that the supermutants are still stupid. I recall from the first time hearing one, that it was very large, very angry, and very stupid. I litteraly laugh when I am fighting and killing them. These new supermutants look smarter, but hopefully they are still stupid muscular pinheads with big guns.

They remind me of Brutes from halo. They act the same way, and are fun to kill.

"STUPID HUMAN! I WILL EAT YOUR BONES!" -Halo brute

"DIE PUNY HUMAN! I WILL WEAR YOUR BONES AROUND MY NECK!" - Fallout SuperMutant brute.

Coincidence? I think not!

Depends on what strain they're from. The super mutants created in Vault 87 tend to be stupid, with only two known exceptions. The super mutants created in Mariposa generally retained their human intelligence, albeit with some who grew even smarter and a few who became dumber.

Basically what The Good Doctor said, it depends on the strain we're dealing with and since it's most likely the strain from vault 87 you can rest easy since they are all idiots.

There are a few nice super mutants: Fawkes, Uncle Leo, Lily, Marcus. I like having them in the games. Westside of New Vegas also had a nice super mutant but he was not very smart.

Yes, because generic dumb brute enemies are always valuable cannon fodder to laugh and shoot at.

Just to be clear - I am being sarcastic. I don't mind some brutes. I DO mind the concept of a generalizing a whole group into generic cannon-fodder. They were human, they should portray the whole spectrum of human abilities/traits/intelligence level.

I prefer to have some super mutants to be smart while others can be the "RAAAHAHAHAHA STUPID HUMAN" type we saw in Fallout 3.

I hope it's mixed, I want plenty of stupid ones for random mobs to kill, but I would also like some mutants that retained their intelligence.

Some of my favourite characters in fallout are the mutants, like Fawkes in 3 or Davison and Tabitha in New Vegas or Lou Tenant in Fallout.

I agree.

Though i have no idea if it will happen in a Bethesda-Fallout game. To get that a Super Mutant was intelligent, there'd have to be some interaction. Which in-turn would mean there is a reason to talk to one. So there'd have to be a quest for the Muties.

And for some reason i have the idea that Bethesda mostly see the Super Mutants as generic slightly-harder cannon fodder.

The E3 presentation videos seemingly show the Sole Survivor fighting alongside a super mutant in some battle against other super mutants, so I suspect we will get one or two "smart" ones.

Presumably any mutants in Fallout 4 will be from the FEV-87 strain. So it would be inconsistent if they all suddenly became smart after its already been established that the Vault 87 variant of the FEV is far less likely to produce an intelligent mutant than the Mariposa strain.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get a second "Fawkes" though.

Probably a Fawkes in there somewhere.

But having a few intellegent Super Mutants, like The Lieutenant, at the back of the Super Mutant Threat and guiding them, would make it... well, seem a bit more of a threat?

But maybe that's just me. :ermm:

There's really nothing about the Vault 87 strain that precludes that though. As long as the vast majority of Vault 87 mutants are "dumb-dumbs" the lore isn't inconsistent. What I mean is that if suddenly now all the East Coast mutants are smarter/less aggressive then that's a problem.

So we could still have a "Fawkes" character or perhaps an overlord "Lieutenant" character (or several) without breaking the lore. Intelligence with the 87 strain isn't impossible, its just much more rare.

Of course the dumb-dumbs should stay, always. They would be the most numerous and the most typical type of Super Mutant seeing as there is no uncontaminated strain of FEV that i know of.

And even the pure strain FEV Virus wasn't dumb-dumb proof.

While most of them are probably going to be enemies, I really do like the option to actually have a dialog with a few. Also it would be cool for there to be a settlement of peaceful super mutants, but I don't really have any reason to believe that is going to happen.

Just to be clear, I liked Fawkes and Uncle Leo. I would want some friendly mutants, and some hostile smart ones. I would just want the majority of them to be dumb. The dummies would be ruled and commanded by the smarter ones.

That's vault 87, and vault 87 ain't in Boston. It's entirely possible we can get intelligent super mutants, especially if Beth get's creative enough in the hows and why's of it.

And, depending on who you talk to, vault 87 mutants already break the lore, creating intelligent (east coast) mutants might just be a small step in mitigating that egregious error

It would be cool to have them as a bonafide Faction, albeit an evil faction. So you could talk to leaders, choose sides in a war and maybe even use them as an army through deception and so on.

Mariposa isn't in Chicago, and we got Mariposa super mutants all the way out there.

Boston is like 1/3 the distance from D.C. as Mariposa is to Illinois

I hope they're not all dumb. The few intelligent supermutants we've encountered thorughout the series have been really interesting characters, like Marcus, Fawkes, Dog/God, Tabitha, Lily, Uncle leo etc. So hopefully there's a few smart ones about.

it still doesn't guarantee that they'll be in Boston. Point is that not all super mutants on the east coast have to come from vault 87, and they don't all have to be as dumb as a box of rocks.

IIRC, vault 87 (and DC, I believe) is out of FEV, so if true, it's even less likely we'll continue seeing mutants from there anyway.
