Please, let us customize Face/Hair after Creation!

Post » Fri Jan 07, 2011 3:40 am

When it comes to Class and Race, we all know what we're in for; and luckily, I don't think there's ever a really *bad* Race or Class. However, when it comes to your Character's Face and Hair, things become tricky.

Now, before anyone starts freaking out with "It's not realistic to change your face", here me out! When I play a video game, I like to try and make the character look like myself. When I first booted up Oblivion, I was blown away by the sheer number of tools I suddenly had at my disposal. I could spend hours upon hours customizing my character, and still not have perfected it.

But I wanted to play.

The end result, was either I just play a default character appearance, or spend hours upon hours tinkering with various settings. And even if I chose the latter, what if I realize I've made a mistake? Even something as trivial as your character's nose looking a little wonky... When you're dumping upwards of 40-60 hours into a character, that one little gripe is going to drive your crazy.

Hence my suggestion; let us customize our character's Face and Hair, even after we create them. Pretty, pretty please?

If ABSOLUTELY nothing else, please add a set of pre-made faces, like you did in Fallout 3, but include one for a Barbarian-looking, red-haired Nord. To me, nothing screams "Viking!" more than red hair.

i would like the ability to change my hair and beards, for guys hair and mmaybe make up for women and I think the area you create your person should have betting lighting so you can see their exact skin tone, sometimes when I could not see my character in the dark dungeons you start out in my avatar would be ghostly white when he left the cave or dungeon you first start in then I have to edit them several times just to get them the right color. I have other times when my none Dunmer characters was blue, while some of my others had a yelloe tint to them other looked sickly and so on and so forth.

I just think, whenever you own your own House, be able to re-customize your basic appearance, or choose from pre-made choices. I do tend to favor helms, but it's still annoying to know your character doesn't look how you want them to.

About the beard thing, a lot of white guys I know have a bit of red in their beard. Maybe it's your inner-viking trying to get out?

It'd be difficult to realistically implement in-game... I'm sure it'd come off poorly.
I prefer to just use the console if I need to make adjustments post-creation.

I wouldn't mind if there was age implemented into gameplay time for all of those longtime players.

I would have to use the console (~) to edit my age and appearance, for I felt like I needed to be older from the fact of playing so long. It also add imersion.

I hope for a better chargen screen. Oblivions lighting made it very hard to make a good looking character without the flaws becoming apparent once you step outside.

I definitely understand your frustrations, however I think there might be better solutions to the problem. I think number one is to just have a better facial customization tool to begin with, I hated the ones in Oblivion and Fallout 3, sure there were a lot of settings, but they were difficult to fully understand and their were so many bad combinations, especially with skin tone. But I am actually not against having a good number of default faces that cover a wide variety of styles, for instance to have the young boyish type, the strong knight type, the macho wrestler, and like you said the viking guy, etc. Sorry for my cheesy descriptions, but you get my point, I mean I hated in Mass Effect that you could only be this ugly brute type guy, even the girl options weren't that great. But anyways, I think hair changes post-creation are a must, I don't think it would be hard to implement and would add a nice addition to gameplay. And I actually really liked Fable III's customization because although you couldn't change your face immediately you could change your hair and clothing in a pretty cool way. I am also very excited about body customization, I hated that you and all the NPCs had the same body type.

I agree with all of this and remove the stupid sliders all moving at the exact same time it changes how you want your creation to look.

let me change my hair and facial hair as well

because i for one did not enjoy seeing my first dunmer with gum purple hair instead of the dark blue i was going for

As long as the character customization is good enough, I could skimp on the Face re-customization. Hair and beard still needs to be customizable, but that's no biggie, as seen in Fallout 3. But they definitely need to simplify the process; not only was it overwhelming, but it made no attempt to explain what any of the sliders did -- nor did it tell you what sliders would *also* move!

Like I said, I just want to be able to play as a pink-skinned, red-haired viking for this game. Not that I don't love me a Redguard, but if you're gonna visit Skyrim, then go all-out with it, right?

I want a deeper system with more customization options to make my character more my own, I do agree with a lighter area tp make your person as I mentioned above in another post of mine.

Seeing that Fallout 3 had the Barber Menu, it is entirely feasible to have some means to redo hair in TES5.
