PLEASE no more ESSENTIAL NPC's!

Post » Tue Sep 28, 2010 2:06 am

For the love of Mehrunes Dagon no more essential npc's. Let us kill who we want when we want. Has this been talked about at all yet?

This could work since if you kill a quest giver someone else will give you the quest.

In Fallout the only essential NPCs were the ones from the main quest.

I'm sure we'll have the same here.

Yeah I'd be ok if the only essential npcs are those of the main quest. After all, it seems most quest givers will be replaced if they are killed but that would not work for the MQ.

I totally agree, essential npc's limit our freedom so my proposal is the quest essential npcs to be unkillable by other npc's and creatures (very easy to program this) but 100% killable by the player.

it would be nice if only main quest NPCs, and children, of course... were essential... because it was so irritating running into an unkillable NPC everywhere i went in oblivion...

hell, the only main quest NPCs werent even out in the open, so running into so many essentials was really stupid.

You know, when playing MW I just loved to see those who started the thousands of threads that started like:

"HELP! I killed so-n-so and now I can't do this-n-that..."

To which my response always was ... "Why the heck did you kill them anyway?". Well "Because I could" seemed to be the only real answer they could give. And then I would laugh at their tears.

I want essentials there because I don't want to accidently kill someone I shouldn't (it could happen). But if I am slaughtering NPC's for fun, I don't deserve to do the quests in game as they were meant to be. But hey, if you have fun doing it then whatever. Just don't come crying to me. No pity here.

Yes it’s so nice to get rid of the stupid travelling merchants. They would disappear in Fallout 3 then the game started to spawn albino radscorpions and other high level enemies

Essential npcs should be invincible to other npcs but not to the player, think about how annoying it would be if you were 3/4 done the mainquest but couldn't continue because the quest giver stole a piece of bread and was killed.

I know it's yet another case of "just because you play one way, doesn't mean everyone else does", but I'm always amazed at these "I'm incredibly offended that I can't just slaughter everyone indiscriminately!" threads. :)

Seriously, the thought of massacring a town in Oblivion has just never occurred to me.

(Personally, I like having a few essentials, so that random AI brainfarts won't accidentally cause the death of someone important to the quests.)

I must admit with the 'stupid ai' of oblivion I liked the essential 'npc's ... On ocassion in a fight they jumped right in before you, did get pretty annoying ... On the other hand I also liked Morrowind where you could kill npc's and a box showed up 'you are now doomed' ....

Well children have already been confirmed, so I don't see how having essential NPCs could make it any worse. In fact, because they're hiding behind a taboo they may as well undo all the progression made by videogames and make it impossible to harm anything that isn't evil.

Sorry... that's my sarcastic rant over with for the day. :whistling:

I think all important npcs should be mortal to the player, with message like Mw, but immortal to everything else.

*You have killed an essential character. You will not be able to continue the main quest. Please load to a previous save or continue on with your doomed path.

Wow. So wanting to kill Children is Taboo and that's bad? Really? What culture are you from anyway? I just never played any character (over the hundreds) that would just randomly kill anyone just because. So I guess the games cater to my playing style. Great. Seriously though if you want a game where you can just kill things there are several out there to fill the need.

There shouldn t be essential NPC.
Essential NPC are only a shackle and an ode to bad plot.
Unfortunatly they are a ncessary evil cause most customers can t even read 5 lines or endure a frustration, so thinking and making a deduction is out of question as failing the main quest or not being the hero, thus the handholders, quest markers, essential NPCs, perks, and otheres full of crap features Bethesda so proudly brag about.

You know, children run away when attacked, they don't just stand there like nothing happened....

Look out Sarah, that giant Behemoth is going your wa...
oh no, she's dead, now I can't finish the main quest. If only I could've read anything that might have saved, this is all because I'm so stupid...

...no, wait, it's not because of that...

The confirmed that some critical story related NPC's will indeed be 'Essential', which I honestly think is a very important game mechanic.

Except you realize now that we're actually getting a shipped product with RAI, not having essentials would mean the game could possibly kill off important characters if the situations are right.

Because they were exercising their inner Master Chief.

There has to be essentials because guards respawn. It would be pretty jarring if you slay everyone and you're living in a world with only guards.
