Please no permanent dragon hunting for main quest!

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:40 am

I really hope that we will not be forced to kill a certain number of dragons in the game as part of the main quest. Like the boring closing of the Oblivion Gates in TES 4: Oblivion...

More diverse, interesting, varied and special quests would be most welcome especially for the main quest!

Nah I think thay aren't necessary to exterminate them HOWEVER they will attack on random occasion.

I think you will be left with no choice toward the end of the game, maybe killing the mother and alpha dragons to end their breeding and rout their leadership. But i wouldn't imagine you would need to kill xx number of dragons to advance the story. That seems really repetitive and doesn't sound like somthing Bethesda would do.

They are pretty much going to attack on random occasion with some scripted appearances

Having to kill one dragon and her brood in her lair would be ok, but not more.

You mean Bethesda is not doing repetitive quests? What about the closing of the Oblivion Gates in TES4? ;)

Better still would be if they've learned a few lessons from Fallout, to the point where you don't actually have to kill ANY of them.

I expect we'll see a few dragon fights as part of the main quest, it's pretty much mandatory if you make a game about fighting dragons, but there should be other things involved in the main quest as well, and the majority of dragons are probably not going to be part of the main quest, hence why they can be non-scripted encounters. In this respect, it's pretty much the same as Oblivion, except hopefully dragon fights will succeed at remaining more entertaining than Oblivion gates.

You mean Bethesda is not doing repetitive quests? What about the closing of the Oblivion Gates in TES4?

Only a small amount of the Oblivion gates were actually necessary as part of the main quest, the Aid for Bruma quest also required closing some, but it wasn't essential to complete that quest to advance the main quest, the bulk of the Oblivion gates were entirely unrelated to quests, and you only needed to close most of them if you wanted Sigil Stones. They did get repetitive, yes, but you could complete the main quest while ignoring most of them entirely if you wanted. And you can't call them repetitive quests when there's no quest attached to them, they're just repetitive places to explore.

Better still would be if they've learned a few lessons from Fallout, to the point where you don't actually have to kill ANY of them.

Not going to happen. The point of being a Dragonborn is that you're someone who kills dragons. Besides, how exactly do you talk you're way out of a fight against a force that is intent on destroying the world?

Most of those Oblivion gates were optional I thought. I'm guessing it'll be similar in Skyrim; you can fight the dragons because they're attacking you or the town or you want more powers and fame, but stopping the attack for good will require something other than just killing them all. (Which might be easier said than done if the dragon attacks are random, unless they give us some kind of dragon sensor. Oblivion gates didn't move around much)

Oh god... I really disliked the oblivion gates towards the end of the main quest. They were just so repetitive. But I think Bethesda knows this and won't make such a mistake again, or at least I hope so. I can't really remember a review of Oblivion where they praised the oblivion gates. I think most people found them to be extremely tedious after the first 5 or so.

TBH, i never found oblivion gates anymore repetitive than a dungeon or ayleid ruin, granted a few minor things were different, but they seemed just like dungeons to me with the addition of a little quest you could choose to do with them, and i never found the dungeons or ayleid ruins to be boring or repetitive.
On killing dragons, i'm sure if the dragon shouts are epic enough you might want to kill them, but i don't see the PC having to kill all of them, i'm sure they still want to have a few roaming around after the MQ.

I would love to see more story put back into it like in Morrowind with the prophecies and whatnot.

Which would be great, Id rather not have to kill any of them. However, I get the feeling it will be in some situations, unavoidable.

Um you do know you didnt actualy have to close most of the gates? There were only a few gates you HAD to deal with the rest you could ignore.

As for dragons your not so much hunting them as they might hunt you.. if they see you.

How many Oblivion gates were you FORCED to close?

I can think of 3, the gate in Kvatch, the gate outside Bruma, and then the Great Gate. All of them were very different. Was that really so bad?

This.

There's a lot more that we know of going on in Skyrim than just slaying dragons. :shakehead:
I think the main quests will be along the lines of how some people in Skyrim want to become independant, plus maybe some investigating quests joining up the murder of the King.

I would be disappointed if it's just an extermination quest against a one dimensional race of bad guys.
